If Spotify keeps closing, freezing, or crashing during playback, first check whether Spotify is having a wider problem, then compare the app with the Web Player or another device. If Spotify works elsewhere, update the app and device, check the connection, clear the cache, and only then perform a clean reinstall. Reinstalling does not delete your playlists, but downloaded music and podcasts must be downloaded again.
First, check whether Spotify is down
Before deleting the app, check whether the problem is Spotify’s service rather than your phone or computer:
- Check @SpotifyStatus for a current incident.
- Search Spotify’s Community Ongoing Issues board for matching reports and updates.
- Open the Spotify Web Player.
- If possible, test Spotify on another device or another network.
If Spotify fails on several devices and in the Web Player, avoid repeatedly reinstalling it. A service-wide problem, account issue, or network restriction is more likely. The status pages can change, so do not assume Spotify is currently down without checking them.
What kind of failure are you seeing?
“Spotify keeps crashing” can describe several different problems:

- The app closes immediately after opening.
- Spotify opens but freezes when a song starts.
- Playback stops, skips, or returns you to the home screen.
- The app crashes while downloading or playing offline music.
- Only a podcast, playlist, local file, Bluetooth connection, or Connect device triggers the problem.
- Tracks are grayed out, or Spotify shows “Something went wrong” or “Page not available.”
- Spotify works on Wi-Fi but not cellular data, or the reverse.
- The issue began immediately after an app or operating-system update.
Offline mode, grayed-out tracks, and playback errors are not automatically evidence of a crash. Spotify groups these symptoms together in its official troubleshooting guidance, but the distinction helps identify the cause.
Try these fixes in order
1. Force-close Spotify and reopen it
Close Spotify completely rather than merely switching to another app. Reopen it and test the same song or playlist. If it closes again, restart the phone, tablet, Mac, or Windows PC.
2. Update Spotify
Install any pending update from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Microsoft Store, or Spotify’s desktop download page. Then reopen Spotify. Do not rely on a fixed “latest version” number: app versions change frequently.

- iPhone or iPad: Open Settings → General → Software Update.
- Android: Open Settings and look for System update or Software update.
- Windows: Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Mac: Open System Settings → General → Software Update.
Spotify recommends keeping both the app and device software current when diagnosing playback problems.
4. Test the connection
Open an ordinary webpage and another streaming service. Then test Spotify on Wi-Fi and cellular data, if available. If it works on one but not the other, the problem is probably related to the network rather than the Spotify installation.
Try these network checks:
- Turn Wi-Fi off for about 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Restart the router if the issue affects your home network.
- Try another Wi-Fi network or a mobile hotspot.
- Check that Spotify is allowed to use mobile data.
- On school, work, hotel, and public networks, check whether streaming services are restricted.
- If you use a VPN or proxy, test with it temporarily disabled if doing so is safe and appropriate.
A firewall or security product can also block the desktop app. Check that Spotify is allowed through the firewall, and use the security vendor’s instructions for exact controls. Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection. If you disable network filtering briefly for a test, turn it back on immediately.
5. Turn off Offline mode
Offline mode usually causes unavailable or grayed-out content rather than a true crash, but it is quick to check.

On an iPhone, iPad, or Android device, open Spotify and go to Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline. Turn off Offline mode if it is enabled.
On desktop, use the Spotify menu in the Mac menu bar, or the File option in Spotify’s three-dot menu on Windows, and disable Offline mode.
6. Check the device
Charge the device, close unusually heavy apps, and test Spotify before reopening them. Also check for overheating and extremely low free space, particularly if Spotify crashes while downloading.
Spotify says a device should have at least 250 MB of available memory when diagnosing device-specific playback issues. Spotify’s wording should not be treated as a complete technical storage requirement, but a nearly full device can still prevent cache creation or downloads. Free up space if the device is close to full.
Clear Spotify’s cache
Clearing temporary data can help if the cache has become corrupted. It does not delete your Spotify account or playlists, and it is less destructive than clearing app storage. However, it is not a universal cure for crashes.
iPhone and iPad
In Spotify, open Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Storage → Clear cache.
Android
Open the device’s Settings → Apps → Spotify → Storage or Storage & cache, then tap Clear cache. Do not tap Clear storage or Clear data unless you are intentionally preparing for a more complete reset; those options remove more local app data.

Reinstall Spotify
Reinstalling is one of Spotify’s main fixes for recurring technical problems. Before doing it, note that downloaded music and podcasts are removed and must be downloaded again afterward. Playlists and account access are separate from those local downloads, but device-specific settings and local data should not be assumed to survive.
Spotify’s official procedures are documented in its guide to reinstalling the Spotify app.
iPhone and iPad: quick reinstall
- Touch and hold the Spotify icon.
- Tap Remove App.
- Tap Delete App.
- Reinstall Spotify from the App Store.
iPhone and iPad: clean reinstall
- In Spotify, open Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline.
- Under Storage, tap Clear beside the cache.
- Open iPhone or iPad Settings → General → iPhone Storage or iPad Storage.
- Select Spotify and delete the app.
- Power the device completely off using its lock and volume controls.
- Wait a few minutes, then restart it.
- Reinstall Spotify from the App Store.
Android 6.0 and newer: quick reinstall
- Open Settings → Apps.
- Select Spotify.
- Tap Uninstall.
- Reinstall Spotify from Google Play or the device’s app store.
Android 6.0 and newer: clean reinstall
- Open Settings → Apps → Spotify.
- Open Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear storage and Clear cache.
- Return to the previous screen and uninstall Spotify.
- In the device’s Files or File Manager app, check internal storage under
Android/data. - If accessible, delete the
com.spotify.musicfolder. If the folder is inaccessible, skip this step; newer Android versions and some manufacturers restrict access toAndroid/data. - If you use an SD card, check its corresponding Android data folder only if your device permits access.
- Restart the phone and reinstall Spotify.
On older Android devices, the manufacturer-dependent path may be Settings → Apps or Applications → application management → Spotify → Clear Data, followed by uninstalling and reinstalling Spotify. Do not use a third-party cleaner or unsafe file-access workaround.
Mac: quick reinstall
- Quit Spotify.
- Open Finder and select Applications.
- Drag Spotify to the Trash.
- Empty the Trash.
- Download and install Spotify again.
Mac: clean reinstall
- Quit Spotify.
- In Finder, choose Go in the menu bar.
- Hold Option and select Library.
- Open Caches and delete
com.spotify.clientandcom.spotify.client.helper. - Return to Library and open Application Support.
- Delete the Spotify folder only.
- Restart the Mac and reinstall Spotify.
Deleting Application Support data is more invasive than clearing a cache. Quit Spotify first and do not delete unrelated folders.
Windows 10 and newer
- Close Spotify.
- Open Start → Settings → Apps.
- Select Apps & Features, or the equivalent installed-apps page in your Windows release.
- Select Spotify and uninstall it.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Reinstall Spotify through the Microsoft Store or directly from Spotify.
The Microsoft Store and direct-download versions can use different installation paths. Identify which version you have before attempting advanced file cleanup.

Android SD card
Spotify specifically recommends testing without an SD card when it may be causing playback problems. This is an Android-only diagnostic:

- Turn the phone off.
- Remove or unmount the SD card according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Restart the phone.
- Test Spotify using internal storage only.
If Spotify works, back up important card data before investigating the card’s free space, health, formatting, or possible corruption. Do not format it before making a backup.
Firewall and security software
If Spotify fails only on a Windows PC or Mac, check whether the firewall permits the application. A brief, controlled test with network filtering disabled can help identify the cause, but only if you understand the risk. Re-enable protection immediately and create an appropriate allow rule instead of leaving security disabled.

If Spotify crashes or playback fails only when using Bluetooth, test the device speaker or wired headphones. Also test another Bluetooth device. This separates a Spotify or network issue from an accessory, pairing, or audio-routing problem.
Downloads and offline playback
If the crash occurs only while downloading or playing downloaded content, check available space, Offline mode, and local data. On Android, test without the SD card. After a reinstall, restore downloads gradually rather than downloading everything at once; this can help identify whether one local download or storage condition is triggering the problem.

If you recently traveled
Spotify says users who spend more than 14 days abroad may be unable to play content and may need to change account settings. This is an account or location playback restriction, not a typical explanation for an app that force-quits. If it matches your situation, use Spotify’s current country and region guidance rather than changing settings at random.
