Only some HP laptops have an integrated privacy screen. HP calls the feature Sure View or Sure View Reflect, and it is an optional display configuration—not a standard feature across a model family. The quickest clue is a privacy-screen icon on the keyboard, often on F2, but the reliable check is to look up your exact HP product number and confirm the display specification.
The quick test: look for HP Sure View
- Look across the function keys for an icon resembling a screen with restricted or shaded side viewing. On many Sure View models it is on F2.
- Open an ordinary webpage or document, then compare the screen from directly in front and from the side.
- Press F2. If nothing changes, try Fn+F2. The right combination varies by model and generation.
- Check whether side-angle visibility changes and whether a privacy indicator lights up. Press the same key again to switch back.
A real privacy mode should make the display harder to read from the side. It may also look dimmer or lower in contrast from straight on. Do not use confidential material during the test. A key icon or a narrow viewing angle is a clue, not definitive proof—particularly on a used or repaired laptop.
What HP Sure View does
HP Sure View is an integrated display technology, not a Windows setting or a camera shutter. It uses specialized display hardware to reduce what people beside you can see when privacy mode is enabled. HP’s technical white paper describes the display technology and reports up to 95% less visible light at certain oblique angles under specified conditions. That is HP’s stated figure, not a guarantee for every model, viewing position, lighting condition, or Sure View generation.

- An external privacy filter: a physical film or panel attached to the screen.
- A naturally narrow viewing angle: a characteristic of an ordinary panel, which may not have any privacy control.
- A webcam shutter: a cover for the camera that does not affect what people can see on the display.
Sure View reduces side-angle visibility; it does not make the screen absolutely private. Someone in front of you may still read it.

Confirm the exact display configuration
HP sells multiple configurations under the same broad product-family name. An EliteBook, ProBook, ENVY, or Spectre may be available with different displays, and availability can vary by region and build. HP describes Sure View as an optional feature that must be configured at purchase in its product documentation. The family name alone cannot confirm what is installed.
Find your product number, then check the specification for the exact machine—not just a page for a similar model.
- Try Fn+Esc. On many HP laptops this opens a system-information window that shows identifying details. HP explains this shortcut in its model-number guide.
- Check Windows System Information. Search Windows for System Information, open it, and read System Model under System Summary. HP’s specification lookup guide also points to myHP and HP Support Assistant as ways to find system details.
- Read the service label. It may be on the bottom of the laptop or, on some models, inside the battery bay. HP’s service-label guide explains which identifiers it may contain.
- Use HP’s identification tool. Enter the serial number, product number, or product name in HP Product Identification to reach the relevant support information.
On the HP Support page for the exact product number, check specifications, manuals, or maintenance-and-service documentation. Search for Sure View, Sure View Reflect, integrated privacy screen, or privacy. Wording such as “HP Sure View integrated privacy screen” or “HP Sure View Reflect integrated privacy screen” is a strong confirmation. If the online specification is unclear, check the model’s parts documentation or ask HP support to verify the installed display assembly.

Use the privacy key shown in the manual for your exact model. Some older systems use Fn+F2; some later systems use F2 alone. Other function keys may adjust brightness or privacy level on particular generations. HP’s Sure View controls guide and model-specific support documentation show why a generic shortcut cannot be guaranteed for every HP laptop.

On supported models, a light on the privacy key can indicate that privacy mode is active. Not every model has an indicator, so a light that is absent—or off—does not by itself prove that the feature is missing. If your function row behaves differently, check Fn Lock and the laptop’s user guide.
To compare modes, view the same screen straight on and from a side angle before and after toggling. In normal use, turn the mode off with the same control when you want to share the display. The normal-mode brightness, contrast, and viewing angle vary by display generation and configuration.

A silent key does not prove the laptop lacks Sure View. Work through these checks:

- Try both F2 and Fn+F2.
- Check whether Fn Lock changes how the function row behaves.
- Look for a privacy icon on the key and consult the user guide for your exact product number.
- Restart Windows and try again.
- Confirm the display specification by product number instead of relying on the key alone.
- If the specification confirms Sure View, install system software or firmware only from the model-specific HP Support page. If it still will not switch, contact HP support.
On a refurbished or repaired laptop, the keyboard and display may have been replaced independently. A privacy icon on the keyboard does not prove that a Sure View display is currently installed, and a replacement keyboard may lack the original icon even when the display supports the feature.

When the screen is hard to see from the side all the time
There are three likely explanations: Sure View is on; the ordinary panel has a naturally narrow viewing angle; or the display assembly is faulty or does not match the machine’s original configuration. Toggle the mode and compare the same content from the same positions. If there is no change, verify the product specification before assuming that privacy mode is stuck on—or that the screen is defective.
Convertible HP laptops deserve one extra check: HP’s datasheet language says integrated Sure View privacy screens are designed to work in landscape orientation. Rotating a screen or using a convertible in portrait orientation may reduce the intended privacy effect.
What Sure View does not protect
- It does not encrypt screen content or prevent screenshots and screen recording.
- It does not stop malware or protect files from someone with access to the laptop.
- It does not protect against someone looking directly at the display.
- It does not transfer to an external monitor or projector. Treat those displays as separate screens that need their own privacy precautions.
Sure View is an aid against nearby side-angle observers, not a substitute for locking the laptop, using strong authentication, or controlling who can access it.
If your HP laptop does not have Sure View
A removable external privacy filter is the practical alternative. Match it to the screen’s actual diagonal and aspect ratio; diagonal size alone may not ensure a good fit. Also check touchscreen compatibility, bezel dimensions, matte or glossy finish, mounting method, two-way or four-way privacy, and expected brightness loss. Removable and adhesive designs suit different use patterns, especially if you frequently open, close, or carry the laptop.
Confirm the installed screen size and shape before ordering. If you are considering a replacement privacy display instead, use HP’s product and parts information to verify compatibility first; a replacement may be costly, unavailable for an older machine, or require technical installation.
