Not in the way that headline suggests. In May 2024, a report found an experimental GPT-related flag in Edge Canary, but testing did not reveal a working, user-facing ChatGPT form-filling feature. Edge now documents AI-powered autofill suggestions based on machine learning; Microsoft does not describe them as ChatGPT or confirm that they use GPT-4.
What the 2024 Edge discovery actually showed
In May 2024, Windows Latest reported finding an experimental flag named msEdgeAutofillUseGPTForAISuggestions in an Edge Canary build. Canary is a preview channel, so a flag there can point to something under development without meaning it is ready for ordinary users.
The flag suggested that GPT-based recommendations for form fields were being explored. But the report said that enabling it did not expose a visible setting or produce working AI suggestions during its tests. Microsoft had not announced a public release, a launch date, or a feature officially called “ChatGPT form filling.” The report’s examples of AI answering unusual questions were possibilities, not demonstrated capabilities. That distinction matters: an internal flag is evidence of an experiment, not proof that ChatGPT was integrated into the stable browser, that OpenAI operated the feature, or that Edge can now complete arbitrary forms automatically.

What Edge offers now
Microsoft’s current documentation describes an AI-powered autofill suggestions feature that uses machine learning to interpret form metadata alongside historical autofill data and offer context-aware suggestions. The documented feature is part of Edge’s autofill system. Microsoft does not identify it as ChatGPT, promise that it can answer any question, or say that every suggested field will be completed correctly. Microsoft Edge privacy documentation
It helps to separate three different things:
- Traditional autofill inserts saved structured information such as a name, address, email address, phone number, or payment detail.
- AI-powered autofill suggestions use machine learning to make suggestions based on a form’s metadata and prior autofill data.
- Copilot in Edge is a separate assistant in the browser sidebar. It can respond to prompts, analyze supported page content, and help draft or rewrite text. It is not the same as automatic autofill.
Microsoft’s enterprise policy documentation lists support for AI-powered autofill under Edge 132 or later on Windows and macOS, and Edge 135 or later on iOS. Android is listed as unsupported for that policy. These are policy-support details, not a guarantee that every user will see the same toggle: availability can depend on version, platform, profile, rollout, and administrator settings. How to find the AI autofill setting
- Open Edge and select Settings and more (
...). - Select Settings, then Passwords and autofill.
- Open Personal info.
- Turn on AI-powered autofill suggestions, if the option is available.
Microsoft’s documentation says the feature depends on address autofill being enabled. The control’s wording or availability may differ by Edge version, region, account, or organization policy. If you do not see it, do not assume an old Canary flag will enable a supported feature.

Can it answer unusual or open-ended form questions?
Do not treat AI autofill as a general-purpose answer generator. Standard autofill is meant for structured personal details. Machine-learning suggestions may help Edge interpret unfamiliar field labels or text inputs, but Microsoft’s documentation does not promise accurate answers to subjective questions or support for every website’s controls.
Review every suggestion before accepting it. A plausible-looking response can still be false, incomplete, or inappropriate. For legal declarations, tax filings, medical histories, financial applications, immigration paperwork, identity checks, and employment attestations, write and verify the answer yourself. Never let a suggestion substitute for your own judgment or sign-off.
Autofill, AI suggestions, and Copilot: different privacy boundaries
“Does Edge send my form to Microsoft?” has no single answer for every browser feature. Microsoft describes different data flows for ordinary form matching, AI-powered autofill, and Copilot.

Ordinary form matching
Microsoft says Edge sends information about a form to its form-fill service, including a hash of the hostname and autofill entry types—for example, whether a field expects an email address or password. Microsoft says user-entered information and user identifiers are not sent to that service for this matching process. That statement concerns ordinary form matching; it should not be generalized to every AI or Copilot interaction. Details in Microsoft’s privacy documentation
AI-powered autofill
Microsoft says the machine-learning system uses form metadata and historical autofill data. Its policy documentation says cloud-based machine-learning models may be used. In other words, “AI-powered” does not establish that all processing occurs locally on your Windows 11 device. The available documentation does not establish that this is ChatGPT or identify a particular GPT model. Policy details
Copilot in Edge
Copilot is a separate assistant. Depending on the request and permission settings, its use of browser context may involve information such as your query, a page’s URL or title, page content, open tabs, or conversation history. To manage that setting, open Edge Settings, go to Appearance > Copilot and sidebar > Copilot, then review Allow Copilot to use browser content. That control is about Copilot’s access to browsing context; it is not the AI autofill toggle.
Microsoft’s support instructions say to sign in to Edge with a personal Microsoft account to use Copilot. This should not be turned into a blanket claim about every autofill feature: the enterprise AI-autofill policy is explicitly not limited to profiles signed in with a Microsoft account. Copilot availability and consent can also vary by region.

Turn off or clear saved autofill information
To stop Edge saving and filling personal information, open Settings and more > Settings > Passwords and autofill > Personal info, then turn off Save and autofill personal info.

To remove stored autofill data, go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data > Choose what to clear. Select a time range, check Autofill form data (includes forms and cards), and choose Clear now. This removes stored autofill data; it is separate from managing Copilot’s browser-content permission.
If the setting is missing or suggestions do not work
- Check your version: open
edge://settings/helpto check for updates. The policy’s documented minimums are Edge 132 on Windows and macOS and Edge 135 on iOS. - Check address autofill: AI autofill suggestions depend on address autofill being enabled.
- Check whether the device is managed: an organization can control the feature. The policy is
EdgeAutofillMlEnabled, underSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgein the registry or Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge in Group Policy. A value of0disables the suggestions; Edge falls back to basic form data. The policy is also disabled ifAutofillAddressEnabledis disabled. Avoid changing managed-device policy settings without your administrator’s approval. - Check your saved details: correct outdated or duplicate personal information before judging a suggestion.
- Consider the website: embedded forms, custom controls, unusual field labels, or anti-autofill measures can prevent a browser feature from working as expected.
- Do not confuse Copilot with autofill: if Copilot cannot use page context, review its browser-content permission. That will not make the autofill feature appear or fix its suggestions.
InPrivate and Guest also behave differently. Microsoft says InPrivate can offer existing autofill entries but does not add new ones; Guest mode does not offer autofill and does not add entries. Microsoft’s privacy documentation explains these limits.
When browser autofill is enough—and when it is not
For routine addresses and contact details, Edge’s built-in autofill may be all you need. A dedicated password manager can make more sense if you need credentials and passkeys across browsers, secure sharing, or a centralized vault. Neither option makes an AI-generated answer authoritative, and buying a password manager does not unlock ChatGPT-powered Edge form filling.

For forms with consequential answers, manual completion and careful review remain the safer choice. The convenience of a suggestion is not worth submitting information you have not verified.
The verdict
The 2024 headline grew out of a real GPT-related experiment in Edge Canary, but it overstated what had been demonstrated. Edge now documents machine-learning-powered autofill suggestions, while Copilot remains a separate sidebar assistant. Neither the Canary flag nor the current documentation supports the claim that Microsoft Edge on Windows 11 has launched ChatGPT as an automatic form-filler.
