Yes, but the amount is unknown. Apple warns that keyboard haptics in iOS 16 or later might affect battery life, because every tap triggers a vibration. Apple has published no percentage or time estimate, and available evidence does not show that keyboard haptics are a major drain for typical users. Heavy typists, older batteries and smaller iPhones may notice the cost more; disabling the feature is a sensible test when endurance matters.

What keyboard haptics do

iOS 16 added tactile feedback to the onscreen iPhone keyboard. Each key tap can produce a brief vibration, independently of the audible typing click:

  • Sound: an audible keyboard click.
  • Haptic: a physical vibration.

You can enable either option, both, or neither. Apple documents the feature and its battery warning at Apple Support.

What Apple’s warning actually establishes

Apple says keyboard haptics “might affect” battery life. That confirms an additional power cost, but it is not a promise that every user will see a noticeable reduction. Apple does not publish actuator energy use, minutes lost, or a model-specific percentage. Contemporary reporting likewise noted the absence of a quantified estimate (9to5Mac; MacRumors).

Question What is supported
Does it use extra energy? Yes. Each vibration requires the phone to activate its haptic hardware.
How much does it use? No authoritative percentage or number of minutes is published.
Will everyone notice? No. The result depends on usage, hardware and battery condition.
Does it damage battery health? There is no cited evidence that ordinary keyboard haptics cause special long-term battery damage.

Why the effect varies

The practical impact is governed by the number of vibration events and the rest of the phone’s workload.

  • Typing volume: long messages, documents and email generate many more events than occasional replies.
  • Battery condition: a degraded battery has less usable capacity, so a small extra load can be easier to notice.
  • Phone size: identical energy use represents a larger percentage of a smaller battery.
  • Other activity: display brightness, weak cellular signal, navigation, camera use, gaming, streaming, background syncing and always-on display features can dominate consumption.

For that reason, claims such as “keyboard haptics reduce battery life by 5%” are unsupported without a controlled test. Macworld editors reported no meaningful difference in their own use, but that was anecdotal rather than a laboratory measurement (Macworld).

Is keyboard haptics the cause of iOS 16 battery drain?

Usually not by itself. Battery complaints appearing after an iOS update can also involve post-update indexing and background processing, heavier Lock Screen use, widgets and location services, always-on display behavior on supported models, app activity, poor reception, battery aging or a change in habits. Reporting on continuing iOS 16 battery complaints included users who still had problems after disabling haptics, so the setting should be treated as a possible contributor rather than a universal diagnosis (Tom’s Guide).

How to measure the effect on your iPhone

Because there is no universal Apple figure, a controlled personal comparison is more useful than a one-day impression.

  1. Open Settings → Battery and note your iPhone model, iOS version, battery health, screen-on time, approximate typing volume and Low Power Mode use.
  2. Use the phone normally for two or three days with haptics enabled.
  3. Turn off Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Keyboard Feedback → Haptic.
  4. Repeat for another two or three days with similar apps, screen brightness, network conditions and typing.
  5. Compare battery percentage at the same time of day, screen-on time and major activities.

Signal strength, temperature, photography, navigation, updates and background synchronization can vary enough to hide a small difference. A slight improvement may be real but unimportant; a dramatic improvement warrants checking other settings and apps rather than assuming haptics were solely responsible.

How to turn keyboard haptics off or on

Disable haptics

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Tap Keyboard Feedback.
  4. Turn Haptic off.

Re-enable haptics

Follow the same path and turn Haptic on.

Use sound and haptics independently

In Keyboard Feedback, leave Haptic on and switch Sound off, or do the reverse. Apple’s complete instructions are at Apple Support.

Who should keep it enabled?

  • People who find tactile feedback improves typing confidence or accessibility.
  • Users whose iPhone comfortably lasts through the day.
  • Heavy typists who value feedback and observe no meaningful difference in their comparison.

Who should disable it?

  • Anyone regularly reaching low battery before the end of the day.
  • Heavy typists with an aging battery.
  • Travelers without dependable charging.
  • Users troubleshooting unexplained drain or who simply find the vibration distracting.

Turning it off is unlikely to fix severe overnight drain, overheating, rapid idle percentage drops, a battery-health warning, poor reception, screen-heavy use, post-update processing or a faulty battery.

Important troubleshooting and limits

No vibration despite enabling Haptic

Confirm Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Keyboard Feedback → Haptic is on, then check Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Vibration. Apple identifies the latter as a prerequisite for vibration feedback (Apple Support). Also test with Apple’s standard keyboard; third-party keyboards can implement their own controls.

Low Power Mode

In iOS 16-era coverage, Low Power Mode was reported not to disable keyboard haptics automatically. Users seeking to eliminate this particular draw had to switch off the Haptic toggle themselves (9to5Mac; MacRumors). That historical behavior should not be assumed for every later iOS release.

Scope of the setting

Apple’s instructions concern the standard iPhone keyboard on compatible iPhones running iOS 16 or later. Do not automatically extend the result to third-party keyboards or iPadOS without checking their separate settings and hardware behavior.

Bottom line

Keyboard haptics consume some additional power, and Apple officially acknowledges that they might affect battery life. The size of the effect is unquantified and is likely to be modest relative to the display, radios and apps for many users. If maximum runtime matters, disable Haptic and compare several similar days; otherwise, keep the tactile feedback if its typing benefit is worth the small, uncertain trade-off.
