Yes—Google Maps works in Spain. You can use it online with Wi-Fi or mobile data, and you can download map areas in advance for offline driving navigation. You do not need a Spanish phone number, Google account, or SIM; you do need internet access for live traffic, current transit information, online searches, and automatic rerouting.
What you need to use Google Maps in Spain
Google lists Spain as supported for core map services, including map tiles, geocoding, driving, walking and cycling routes, traffic, and speed-limit data. That supports using Maps across Spain, including major destinations such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Málaga, Bilbao, and Granada. The distinction that matters on a trip is availability versus connectivity. Google Maps is available in Spain, but online features need an internet connection. Your phone can often determine its location using GPS without cellular service; that alone does not provide online map details, destination searches, traffic, or rerouting. For offline driving, download the relevant map area before losing your connection.

Underground stations, tunnels, dense city centers, mountain terrain, and remote rural or island areas can make location or mobile reception less reliable. That is a local signal or mapping limitation, not evidence that Google Maps is blocked in Spain.
How to download Google Maps for offline use

What offline mode can and cannot do
Google says offline driving navigation works when the complete route stays within the downloaded area. If you are driving beyond a city, save a broad enough area to cover the full trip; this is a practical consequence of Google’s route-area requirement, and it also helps avoid running out of map coverage if your route changes. Do you need a Spanish SIM or eSIM?
No. Choose connectivity based on your trip, device, and carrier terms. Wi-Fi can work for planning, but it is not a dependable connection for continuous navigation away from access points.

An eSIM is not automatically cheaper than roaming, and a data-only plan may not include a Spanish phone number, voice calls, or SMS. Check device compatibility and the terms of the specific plan before buying.
Using Google Maps for driving in Spain
Google lists driving routes and traffic coverage for Spain, but a suggested route is not a guarantee that every road is open, appropriate for your vehicle, or legally accessible. Follow road signs and local rules over the app, and check for closures or restrictions when a route matters.

- Download the full driving area before a rural or mountain trip, where mobile coverage may be weaker.
- Review route settings for toll roads or ferries if you want to avoid them; avoiding them may add time or distance.
- In historic centers, check for one-way streets, pedestrian zones, restricted-access areas, and limited parking. A route that reaches a destination pin may not lead to a usable entrance or parking space.
- Keep your phone charged; a power bank is useful on long drives.
Using Maps for transit, walking, and cycling
Online Maps can show public-transport routes where Google has data for the relevant city or operator. For service alerts, strikes, planned closures, late-night schedules, ticket rules, and reservations, check the local transport operator’s official app or website as well. Do not assume that the same transit detail is available in every Spanish city. Offline transit directions are unavailable.
Online walking and cycling routes are supported where mapped; offline directions for both are unavailable. In older neighborhoods, routes can encounter stairs, pedestrian-only lanes, or access restrictions. For rural trails or long hikes, do not treat a standard Maps route as a dedicated hiking-navigation tool. Save a second navigation reference, carry a charged phone, and consider backup power. GPS positioning may also become less accurate among tall buildings, underground, in tunnels, or in steep terrain.
If Google Maps is not working
- Check that Location Services are enabled and that Airplane Mode is off.
- Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data is available. If using a SIM or eSIM, check that the intended line is selected for mobile data and that its plan is active.
- Move to a place with a stronger signal if you are in a tunnel, underground station, or remote area.
- Restart Google Maps. When connected to Wi-Fi, check for an app update.
- If offline, confirm that the map is downloaded and covers the route. Expand or download the area while online if necessary.
- Try the destination’s full address, postal code, or Spanish name if a search does not find it.
- For a transit disruption or incomplete schedule, consult the transport operator directly. For an important business visit, confirm hours and access with the business.
- Keep the hotel, rental-car office, and airport addresses saved or written down as a backup.
If a travel SIM or eSIM does not connect, check its setup instructions and ask the provider about network compatibility. If you plan to use a carrier-issued SIM, confirm roaming and device-lock details with your home carrier.
