Yes. Google Maps uses GPS (part of the broader GNSS satellite-navigation system), but it can also use Wi-Fi, cellular networks, device sensors and a last-known location. Your phone’s operating system combines available signals and provides Maps with a location estimate. That means a blue dot can appear even when the phone does not have a reliable live GPS fix.
How GPS works with Google Maps
GPS satellites transmit signals that a compatible phone can use to calculate its position. In practice, Maps generally receives a location estimate from the phone’s operating system; Maps then displays that estimate on the map and uses it for directions and navigation. GPS is the familiar name for one satellite system; GNSS is the broader term for satellite-navigation systems.
Google says GPS may locate a device to around 20 meters in suitable conditions. That is an approximate figure, not a guaranteed accuracy for every phone or location. Google’s location-accuracy guidance describes GPS alongside other sources.
What else can determine your location?
Phones can combine several signals. Which ones contribute depends on the device, operating system, permissions, settings and what signals are available.

| GPS and other satellite signals | Provide satellite-based positioning, especially useful for tracking movement outdoors. |
| Wi-Fi access points | Help estimate position when nearby networks can be identified; useful when satellite signals are obstructed. Google describes how publicly broadcast access-point information may contribute to Location services in its access-point guidance. |
| Cell towers | Provide a rough network-based location. Google says this can be accurate only to a few thousand meters, so it is not a substitute for a good satellite fix. |
| Device sensors | Accelerometers, gyroscopes, barometers and other sensors can help estimate movement, orientation or elevation. Their contribution varies by device. |
| Cached or last-known position | May let Maps show where the phone was previously located when it cannot determine a current position. |
Android’s Location Accuracy service can combine wireless signals, sensors and other information to improve or speed up location estimates, particularly indoors or near large buildings. Disabling Location Accuracy is not the same as disabling GPS: Android may still use GPS and device sensors, though an estimate can be slower or less accurate. Menu labels differ among Android versions and manufacturers; see Google’s Android location-settings guidance.
What the blue dot tells you—and what it does not
The blue dot is Maps’ estimate of your current location, not proof that GPS has a live fix. A small light-blue circle indicates greater certainty; a larger circle means the estimate is less precise. A gray dot may show the last known location when Maps cannot determine the current one. Google notes that Maps can show a location without a GPS signal, including when navigation is not active, in its GPS Signal Lost troubleshooting guidance.

- 6” high-resolution navigator includes map updates of North America
- Hands-free calling when paired with your compatible smartphone with BLUETOOTH technology and convenient Garmin voice assist lets you ask for directions to places you want to go

- Driver alerts for things such as school zones, sharp curves and speed changes help encourage safer driving and increase situational awareness
- Access live traffic, fuel prices, parking, weather and smart notifications when you pair this navigator with your compatible smartphone running the Garmin Drive app
This explains why a blue dot and a “GPS Signal Lost” notice can appear together: another source may support an approximate dot, while the location updates are not reliable enough for continuous navigation.

It depends on what you need. Maps may display map content, places, an approximate network-based position or a last-known location without a live GPS fix. Those things do not mean it can reliably follow your movement.

For turn-by-turn navigation, Google says the device needs GPS/GNSS location tracking. If that signal is unavailable or unreliable, your position may jump, route progress may stop updating, or Maps may report “GPS Signal Lost.” Satellite reception and internet access are separate: mobile data is not what makes GPS signals reach the phone.
Can Google Maps work without internet?
GPS reception itself does not require mobile data or Wi-Fi internet. Internet connectivity can provide map and place data, searches, traffic, route changes and network-assisted location information. Offline behavior depends on factors including whether the relevant area has been downloaded, the feature, app version, platform and region; do not assume every route or live feature will work offline.

Why GPS can be inaccurate or disappear
Satellite signals can be blocked, reflected or weakened. Google identifies indoor and underground locations, tunnels, tall buildings and some vehicle window films as possible obstacles. Battery-saving features and low battery can also affect location behavior. A phone may have GPS hardware and still fail to get a reliable fix because of obstruction, settings or a device problem.

- Indoors, underground or in a tunnel: expect weaker satellite reception; Maps may lean on other signals or show an older estimate.
- Among tall buildings: signals can be obstructed or reflected, making the estimate less steady.
- Inside a vehicle: some metallic window films can interfere with reception.
- Permissions or power settings: Maps may not be allowed to access location, or battery-saving settings may affect updates.
- Persistent outdoor failure: if other GPS-status apps also cannot acquire a fix in an open area, Google advises considering a device issue rather than assuming Maps alone is at fault.
How to improve a location that jumps or seems wrong
Android
- Turn on the device’s Location setting and make sure Maps has permission to use location.
- Turn on Wi-Fi or mobile data, and turn off Airplane mode.
- If the location jumps or updates poorly, turn off Battery Saver.
- Move somewhere with a clearer view of the sky or stronger Wi-Fi signal; indoors, underground and near obstructions, GPS may not be dependable.
- Calibrate the compass by moving the phone in a figure-eight motion.
- Restart the phone if the problem continues.
For Android-specific accuracy settings and caveats, consult Google’s Android location-accuracy instructions.

iPhone

- Check Wi-Fi or mobile data and turn off Airplane mode.
- If the location jumps, turn off Low Power Mode.
- Calibrate Maps or the compass if prompted.
Google’s iPhone and iPad location instructions cover these settings.
Location settings and privacy are separate questions
Location access determines whether Maps can receive a device location. On Android, Location Accuracy affects how the device may combine sources to improve an estimate. Account features such as Location Sharing or Timeline are separate from simply seeing a dot on the map; their use depends on the permissions, settings and feature involved. Google describes information used by Android Location Accuracy—including wireless signals, sensors, IP address, device model and settings—in its Location Accuracy explanation. A visible dot alone does not establish that a permanent location-history entry was created.
