Yes. Epic Games uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) extensively. Fortnite’s dedicated game servers and much of its backend platform have been publicly documented on AWS, alongside databases, websites, analytics, storage, rendering and build workloads. However, Epic has also described using multiple cloud providers for some core services, so it would be inaccurate to say that every Epic product runs exclusively on AWS.
The evidence in brief
- 2012: Epic said it began developing services on AWS.
- 2018: Amazon announced that Epic was going “all-in” on AWS. The announcement identified Fortnite’s worldwide game-server fleet, backend systems, databases and websites as AWS workloads (Amazon’s announcement).
- 2018: Epic’s own Fortnite outage postmortem said dedicated servers ran primarily on thousands of AWS instances.
- February 14, 2023: Epic announced Fortnite’s NA-Central region, built with AWS Local Zones in Dallas to reduce latency for players in central United States and Mexico (Epic’s announcement).
- Current Unreal Engine documentation: Epic says its internal Horde deployment is hosted on AWS (Horde deployment documentation).
What AWS does for Epic
Fortnite game servers
Fortnite uses dedicated server software for multiplayer matches. Epic operates that software, while AWS supplies much of the underlying compute, networking and data-center capacity. The older postmortem specifically mentioned c4.8xlarge EC2 instances. That is historical evidence, not a current 2026 hardware specification.

Backend, databases and websites
AWS’s customer announcement described Epic’s backend platform, databases and websites as AWS workloads. These systems support functions such as accounts, matchmaking-related services, inventories, live-service operations and web experiences, although public sources do not provide a complete current architecture for every component.

AWS materials describe an Epic data lake containing petabytes of data. The 2018 announcement named Amazon Kinesis Streams and Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR) for ingesting and analyzing large volumes of game and social-interaction events. AWS says these analytics help Epic understand player behavior and feedback. Those figures and descriptions come from AWS promotional material, not an independent infrastructure audit.

Containers, builds and rendering
Epic said it planned to use Amazon’s Kubernetes service (then called Amazon ECS for Kubernetes, now Amazon EKS) to simplify infrastructure management during demand peaks. AWS later reported that Epic used tens of thousands of EC2 instances, including AWS Graviton-powered machines, for gaming, rendering and remote Unreal Engine build pipelines. Treat that as an AWS-attributed description of the relevant period rather than a complete, independently verified inventory.
Regional and edge infrastructure
AWS Local Zones place selected cloud resources closer to population centers. Epic’s NA-Central Fortnite region uses a Dallas Local Zone. A nearby region can help reduce network distance, but it does not guarantee a low ping for every player.
Does Epic own Fortnite’s physical servers?
Usually, no—not in the sense of owning all the physical machines hosting Fortnite. AWS owns and operates the underlying data centers and hardware. Epic deploys and runs its game code, services, databases, networking configuration, monitoring, release systems and live operations on that cloud infrastructure.

The distinction is similar to the client/server model explained in Epic’s Fortnite documentation: the downloaded client runs on your PC or console, while multiplayer game software runs on central servers. AWS hosts much of those server-side workloads; it does not create Fortnite or replace the client installed on your device.
Is everything Epic does hosted on AWS?
No public evidence supports that absolute claim. Epic’s outage postmortem says Fortnite’s dedicated servers were primarily on AWS, while some core services operated across multiple cloud providers and availability zones. Epic discussed adding providers to reduce the effect of a regional or provider failure, while acknowledging the extra deployment, networking, monitoring and data-replication complexity.
The safest wording is therefore:
AWS is a major, publicly documented infrastructure provider for Epic—especially Fortnite—but it is not established as the exclusive provider for every Epic product or service.

That qualification matters for the Epic Games Store, other games and corporate systems. An incident report about an Epic Games Store outage mentions cloud, CDN, firewall and deployment layers, but it is not a complete provider-by-provider map of the Store (Epic’s incident report).

What AWS means for Fortnite players
AWS can influence where a match server is located, but it is only one part of latency. Ping also depends on your ISP’s routing, physical distance, congestion, Wi-Fi or local-network conditions, the matchmaking region selected and the particular data center handling your match.
Epic recommends leaving matchmaking on Auto or selecting the region with the lowest displayed ping. You can change it through Fortnite’s settings; Epic’s support guide explains the current path and options (Epic support).

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code

- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

AWS Local Zones may shorten the route for players near Dallas, for example, but they cannot fix poor ISP routing or a congested home connection. Nor does an AWS outage automatically mean that all Fortnite regions or all AWS services are unavailable.

“It runs in the cloud” does not mean unlimited capacity. Epic’s postmortem illustrates several practical constraints:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Regional instance quotas: Epic reached a regional total-instance limit that could have prevented additional scaling during a demand spike.
- IP-address exhaustion: Available addresses in standard
/24subnets ran out during a complex scaling event, contributing to slower load-balancer recovery. - API rate limits: Cloud control-plane APIs can throttle provisioning and recovery operations even when hardware capacity exists.
- Regional and provider failures: Multi-region or multi-cloud designs can reduce the blast radius, but increase operational and data-management complexity.
Epic still has to forecast capacity for major events, request quotas, plan subnets, distribute services across availability zones, monitor dependencies, manage costs and rehearse recovery. AWS provides elasticity; it does not eliminate those engineering responsibilities.

AWS is not Unreal Engine
These names describe different layers:
- Unreal Engine: Epic’s game engine and development toolchain.
- Fortnite client: The software installed and rendered on a player’s device.
- Dedicated game servers: The authoritative multiplayer processes that coordinate matches.
- AWS: Cloud compute, storage, networking and managed services used to run selected Epic workloads.
Epic can use AWS to build, render and operate Unreal-based projects, but AWS does not “make” Fortnite and does not control Epic’s game design or matchmaking decisions.
What this means for developers
Epic’s architecture is useful evidence that AWS can support very large live-service workloads, but it is not a recommendation that every studio should copy the same stack. A small team may prefer a managed game-server provider, a simpler fixed-price host or a single-region deployment. AWS services such as Amazon GameLift Servers, EC2, S3, EKS and CloudFront can be appropriate when a team needs elasticity and control, but usage-based billing, data-transfer charges, quotas and cloud-specific dependencies require careful planning.
Likewise, Epic Online Services can provide identity, social, matchmaking and related capabilities; it is complementary to hosting rather than a substitute for every compute and networking service. Azure and Google Cloud are credible alternatives, but switching providers can mean rebuilding integrations, observability, databases and deployment workflows.
Bottom line
Epic Games definitely uses AWS, and Fortnite is heavily dependent on AWS infrastructure for dedicated servers and many surrounding services. The precise, current claim is that AWS is a major part of Epic’s cloud platform—not that every Epic game, website or service runs exclusively on AWS.
