There is no public official evidence that Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) specifically identifies Wireshark as a cheat or automatically bans players for having it installed or capturing their own traffic. But EAC does not publish its full detection logic, and individual games can have stricter rules. Passive packet capture is different from changing, replaying, or injecting game traffic; if you cannot risk an account penalty, capture from a separate device or check with the game’s support team first.
What “detect Wireshark” could mean
The phrase can describe several different things, and public information does not establish that EAC does any of them specifically for Wireshark:
- Finding the Wireshark application: EAC’s public materials do not name Wireshark as a prohibited application or automatic ban trigger.
- Finding Npcap: On Windows, Wireshark uses Npcap for live packet capture. The public EAC materials cited here do not say that EAC treats Npcap as a cheat driver.
- Noticing capture activity: The public sources do not establish whether EAC detects ordinary packet-capture activity.
- Detecting manipulation: Injecting, altering, replaying, delaying, or otherwise interfering with game traffic is distinct from passive capture and may violate a game’s rules.
So it is not accurate to say either that EAC definitely detects Wireshark or that it definitely cannot. The supported conclusion is narrower: EAC has not publicly documented Wireshark, Npcap, or ordinary packet capture as a detection target in the sources cited here.
What Wireshark and Npcap do
Wireshark is a general-purpose network protocol analyzer used to capture and inspect traffic. Its ordinary capture function observes packets; it is not inherently a game-process modifier, memory editor, injector, or cheat. Wireshark describes its capture architecture in its packet-capture documentation.

On Windows, live capture normally uses Npcap, which the Wireshark installer can include. Without Npcap, Wireshark can still open saved capture files, but it cannot perform normal live capture. The low-level capture component, dumpcap, handles access to packets; the full Wireshark interface does not need to run with elevated privileges in the same way. That distinction matters: a concern about “Wireshark” may actually be a concern about a capture driver or capture activity. The available EAC sources do not settle whether a particular game’s implementation notices those components.

What EAC says publicly—and what it does not
EAC describes its purpose as helping game publishers detect and prevent cheats or tools intended to provide an unfair in-game advantage. It also says it does not disclose the exact detections behind bans, because that information could help cheat developers. Read its EAC questions and answers.

Having Wireshark installed is not the same as EAC actively scanning your computer at all times. The cited EULAs describe operation in relation to the game session, but integrations and wording vary. Check the agreement and support information for the specific game you play.
Passive capture is different from manipulating game traffic
A normal capture records traffic visible to your device for later inspection. That is materially different from using a tool or setup to:

- Inject or change packets;
- Replay captured traffic;
- Route the game through an interception proxy to interfere with it;
- Deliberately delay, drop, or reorder packets; or
- Automate in-game actions using captured data.
Those actions can be treated as unfair manipulation or violate a publisher’s rules, even if Wireshark is only one part of the setup. Do not use packet capture to interfere with a live game or gain an advantage.

How to assess the practical risk

Safer ways to troubleshoot game networking
- Check the specific game’s rules and support pages. EAC is not a substitute for the publisher’s terms; rules can differ between games.
- Capture only traffic you are authorized to inspect. On a normal switched network, your PC generally sees its own traffic, not every device’s traffic. Visibility depends on the operating system, driver, adapter, and network setup; see the Wireshark FAQ.
- If live capture is necessary, install Wireshark from its official site and Npcap only if required. Start capture on the interface carrying your own traffic, reproduce the issue, then stop. Do not route traffic through a modification tool.
- Protect the capture file. It can expose IP addresses, hostnames, DNS queries, timing, and other metadata. Encrypted traffic may still reveal endpoints and packet sizes even when its contents are unreadable.
- Prefer a separate device for high-stakes play. A supported router, gateway, or mirror port can keep capture software and Npcap off the EAC-protected gaming PC. This does not authorize interception of someone else’s traffic.
- Use lower-detail alternatives when they answer the question. A game’s network graph or logs, operating-system network statistics, or event logs may help without a packet-capture driver. TShark is Wireshark’s command-line counterpart, but it uses the same capture infrastructure and is not inherently safer from anti-cheat scrutiny.
If the game kicks or bans you
A kick or ban after installing or using Wireshark does not prove that Wireshark caused it. EAC says a ban may be applied after a player has gone offline and that it does not reveal the exact detection, so timing alone cannot identify the cause. Other running software, a game update, a server-side rule, account compromise, or a publisher moderation decision may also be involved.
