No. Ctrl+S is not the standard Windows screenshot shortcut. In Snipping Tool, it saves a snip that has already been captured. To take a screenshot, use Windows+Shift+S for a selected area, Print Screen for a full-screen image copied to the clipboard, or Windows+PrtScn for a full-screen image saved in PicturesScreenshots.
What Ctrl+S does in Snipping Tool
There are two separate actions in a screenshot workflow: capturing what is on screen and saving the captured image. Ctrl+S is the save action when a snip is open in Snipping Tool. It does not start a new screenshot capture. Microsoft documents that use of Ctrl+S in its Snipping Tool instructions.
If you press Ctrl+S before capturing anything, Windows will not take a screenshot just because you used that key combination. The shortcut may still do something in the active app: shortcuts can vary by app and settings. The important distinction is that Ctrl+S is not Windows’ general-purpose screenshot command.
Which Windows screenshot shortcut should you use?
Choose according to the area you want and whether you want the image on the clipboard or saved as a file. Microsoft’s Windows shortcut references describe these built-in options for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

How to capture and save a screenshot
Capture only part of the screen
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Select a capture mode or drag over the area you want to capture.
- The snip is copied to the clipboard. Paste it into an app that accepts images, or open the Snipping Tool notification to review it and save it.
- If the snip is open in Snipping Tool, press Ctrl+S to save it.
This is the right workflow when you do not want the entire desktop in the image. The initial shortcut captures the snip; Ctrl+S comes later if you want to save that capture.

Copy the whole screen and paste it elsewhere
- Press Print Screen (often labeled PrtSc).
- Switch to an app or document where you want the image.
- Paste the clipboard image, typically with Ctrl+V.
This workflow puts the capture on the clipboard rather than directly saving a screenshot file. If you need a file, paste the image into an app that can save images, or use a Snipping Tool capture and save it there.
Save the whole screen directly
- Press Windows+PrtScn.
- Look in PicturesScreenshots for the captured image.
Microsoft lists that folder as the destination for this shortcut. If you instead want only a selected portion of the display, use Windows+Shift+S.

Why capture and save are different
A common source of confusion is pressing a save shortcut when no screenshot has been captured or opened. A capture can first exist only on the clipboard, or it can be open in Snipping Tool for review. Ctrl+S saves the current snip in the latter workflow; it is not a substitute for the capture step.
- Want a selection? Start with Windows+Shift+S, then choose whether to paste or save the snip.
- Want the entire screen on the clipboard? Use Print Screen.
- Want the entire screen in a file? Use Windows+PrtScn and check PicturesScreenshots.
- Already have a snip open in Snipping Tool? Use Ctrl+S to save it.
What to check if a shortcut behaves differently
Print Screen behavior can be affected by Windows settings, including a setting that assigns the key to open screen snipping. The active application can also have its own shortcut behavior. Microsoft notes that shortcut behavior may vary; its shortcut guidance is a useful reference if a key does not produce the expected result.

- Ctrl+S opens a save action in another app: That is the active app’s behavior, not evidence that Ctrl+S is Windows’ screenshot shortcut. Use one of the screenshot capture shortcuts instead.
- Print Screen opens a snipping overlay: Check Windows settings for the Print Screen assignment. You can use Windows+Shift+S to open the screenshot overlay directly.
- You captured an image but cannot find a file: Check whether you used a clipboard workflow. Print Screen and Windows+Shift+S copy the image to the clipboard; Windows+PrtScn is the shortcut Microsoft identifies for saving a full-screen capture in PicturesScreenshots.
- You want a file from a selected snip: Open or select the snip in Snipping Tool and use Ctrl+S. Saving is a separate step from taking the snip.
