Yes. British Airways lets passengers track delayed or missing checked baggage online after a baggage report has been created. You need the missing baggage report number—not usually your booking reference or baggage-tag number. BA’s system provides case and status tracking, not a live GPS map for every checked bag.
Open British Airways’ official baggage reporting and tracking page to report a problem or check an existing case. The cited guidance is the US version, so reporting deadlines and procedures can vary by itinerary, country, and applicable law.
How British Airways baggage tracking works
When a checked bag fails to arrive, British Airways creates a delayed-baggage report. The bag’s details are entered into WorldTracer, the baggage-tracing system used to help locate and reunite passengers with mishandled luggage.

- Check the status of the delayed-baggage case.
- Track the reported bag through the tracing process.
- Add identifying information.
- Update contact details and the delivery address.
- Share an AirTag location link, if you have one.
This is different from universal live tracking. BA’s public passenger-facing system does not promise a continuous, GPS-style location history for every bag from check-in onward. Airport and airline handling scans may exist, but passengers should not assume that each scan will appear immediately in the portal.
How to track a delayed British Airways bag
- Report the missing bag. If you are still at the airport, go to the baggage services desk or a British Airways representative before leaving. If you have already left, use BA’s online baggage portal to submit the delayed-baggage report.
- Provide your travel and baggage details. Keep your boarding pass, itinerary, baggage receipt, bag-tag information, and identification available.
- Save the missing baggage report number. This is the reference used to access the case later.
- Open BA’s baggage tracking portal. Enter the report details requested on the official page.
- Check the case status and messages. Status updates may not appear at the same time as physical baggage movements.
- Confirm the delivery address. Provide a reachable address, including a hotel or other temporary address if appropriate.
- Add an AirTag location link if available. This gives BA an additional passenger-supplied location signal, but it does not replace the baggage report.
At some airports, you may also need to complete a customs declaration. When BA finds the bag, delivery is generally made to the address you select at no charge, subject to local customs requirements.
What number do you need?
The important credential is the missing baggage report number issued when you report the problem. British Airways gives an example consisting of five letters followed by five numbers, such as JFKBA12345.

Do not confuse it with:
- Your booking reference.
- Your flight number.
- The baggage receipt number.
- The number printed on the physical bag tag.
BA specifically distinguishes the missing-baggage report number from the baggage receipt number. If the portal rejects a number, check your report confirmation rather than repeatedly entering the booking or bag-tag reference.
Can you track a BA bag before reporting it?
Not through BA’s described passenger tracking workflow. The official online tracking service is tied to a delayed or missing baggage report. It is not presented as a universal tool for independently tracking every checked bag before a problem has been reported.
A normal booking reference therefore is not a substitute for opening a delayed-baggage case.

Can an AirTag help track British Airways baggage?
Yes. British Airways allows passengers to add an AirTag location link to an existing delayed-baggage report. To create the link:

- Select the relevant AirTag.
- Choose Share Item Location and generate the link.
- Add that link to your BA delayed-baggage report through the airline’s baggage portal.
BA says authorized personnel can use the shared link to help locate the delayed item. The link automatically expires after seven days, or you can stop sharing it sooner. It is useful additional evidence, but it does not guarantee immediate recovery, replace customs procedures, or make the airline’s tracing process unnecessary.
An AirTag and BA’s case status may also disagree. For example, the AirTag may show a location while the airline portal still says it is searching. Share the location link and any useful identifying details with BA, then continue following the official case.
BA’s cited guidance specifically documents AirTag sharing. It does not establish that every Google Find Hub or competing Bluetooth-tracker feature is available in every BA baggage workflow.
How long does British Airways take to return delayed baggage?
British Airways says it returns most missing bags within 72 hours. Another BA FAQ describes many passengers being reunited with their baggage within 24–72 hours after creating a delayed-baggage report.
These are typical service expectations, not guarantees. Delays can last longer when the journey involved multiple carriers, an incorrect or changing delivery address, missing bag tags, customs clearance, complex connections, or onward transportation to another airport or country.

The US-facing BA guidance says delayed bags should be reported within eight days of the flight. Treat that as the deadline stated on that regional page, not as a universal deadline for every itinerary or jurisdiction.

The reference number is rejected
Check that you are using the missing baggage report number, not the booking reference, flight number, baggage receipt, or physical bag-tag number. If no report number was issued, contact the baggage services channel for the airport or use BA’s official reporting page to create a case.
No delayed-baggage report was filed
Tracking normally begins with a report. File one through the baggage desk if you are still at the airport, or through BA’s online portal if you have already left.

A stagnant status does not by itself prove that the bag is permanently lost. The online record may not update at the same pace as physical baggage handling. Keep checking the portal and BA’s email or text updates, and make sure your contact and delivery details are current.
The bag is showing at another airport or country
Give BA the location information and confirm your delivery address. Customs clearance, local handling, and courier arrangements may still be required before the bag can be released or delivered.
You have changed hotels
Update the address through the existing baggage case. BA says travelers can provide a temporary address, such as a hotel, and later change it if they move to another destination.

Another airline operated part of the trip
Identify which carrier operated the relevant flight and handled the baggage process. Codeshare and interline itineraries may involve different reporting arrangements, so do not assume that one workflow applies to every segment.

BA says damage or missing contents should be reported within seven days of receiving the bag, and you should retain the damaged luggage because it may be needed to verify the claim.
Should you put a tracker in checked luggage?
An AirTag can be worthwhile if you already use Apple devices and want an independent location signal when a bag is delayed. It may help indicate whether the bag remains at the departure airport, has reached another airport, or is near the destination.
It is not required to use BA’s official baggage tracking, and it does not guarantee that staff can immediately access or retrieve a bag. You still need to report the missing luggage, preserve the report number, provide delivery details, and follow customs or carrier procedures.
For other Bluetooth trackers, BA’s published guidance reviewed here specifically confirms AirTag sharing. It does not confirm an equivalent submission process for every Tile, Chipolo, or other device.

Bottom line
British Airways does offer baggage tracking, but it is primarily case-based tracking for delayed or missing checked baggage. Report the bag first, keep the missing baggage report number, and use BA’s portal for status and delivery updates. An AirTag can supplement the case with a shared location link, but neither BA’s portal nor an AirTag should be described as guaranteed live GPS tracking for every bag.
