Not every keygen is technically a virus, but an unofficial keygen should be treated as unsafe. It may be a licensing-bypass tool, an unwanted application, or malware disguised as one—and a working key or a “hack tool” antivirus label does not prove the file is clean. If you have not run it, delete it. If you have, treat the device as potentially compromised and take the steps below.
What is a keygen?
A keygen, short for key generator, is a program intended to create product keys or serial numbers for software. It is commonly used to activate software without an authorized license. The term is also used loosely for patchers, loaders, activators, license-check emulators, and archives that bundle one of these tools with other files. These programs do not all work the same way. Malwarebytes describes keygens as tools for generating product keys, often for unauthorized activation.
That purpose matters to security software: a tool designed to bypass licensing or modify an installed program can behave in ways that resemble malware, even when it is not a conventional self-replicating virus. But an apparent keygen can also be a fake, a tampered copy, or a working tool with hidden malicious code.

Can a keygen contain malware?
Yes. A keygen may be bundled with an unwanted installer, replaced with malware, or modified so that it performs its advertised function while also stealing information or installing another payload. An archive’s name and interface are easy to fake; even a generated key that works is no evidence that the program did nothing else.

Microsoft says malware is often installed alongside keygens and reports that more than half of the computers where it detected the relevant HackTool:Win32/Keygen threat also had malware detections. That is evidence of risk among affected computers, not a present-day infection probability for every downloaded file. Microsoft’s threat entry explains the association.
Older figures need the same caution. Microsoft’s Security Intelligence Report Volume 13 reported that more than 76% of computers reporting keygen detections in the first half of 2012 also reported detections from other threat families. A historical Microsoft/IDC study reported malicious or potentially unwanted software in 11% of keygens and crack tools downloaded from websites and 59% from peer-to-peer networks. These findings describe their particular time periods and methods, not all files available today. The lasting point is that unofficial distribution makes a keygen a poor file to trust.
Risk can enter at several stages: a download site may use deceptive buttons or fake CAPTCHA prompts; an archive may include an unrelated installer; a patcher may change files or settings; or a previously trusted download source may be compromised. Microsoft describes how attacks on software supply chains can cause malicious code to run with an application’s normal permissions in its supply-chain malware guidance.

Why does antivirus flag keygens?
Security products use different labels for different kinds of risk. “Virus” is often used casually to mean any harmful software, but technically it is only one category. Malware is the broad term; a virus typically replicates by inserting itself into other files or programs. A trojan masquerades as legitimate software, an infostealer targets passwords or browser data, and ransomware blocks access to files for extortion. A potentially unwanted application (PUA) or hack tool may be risky without necessarily being classified as malware.
Microsoft notes that unwanted applications can show advertising, install additional programs, use system resources, or alter browser behavior. Its PUA guidance distinguishes these applications from malware. A keygen detection may therefore indicate licensing-bypass behavior, suspicious modifications, bundled software, or a trojan. The label alone does not reveal everything inside a particular copy.

Detection names are vendor-specific and can change. A generic label is not a complete analysis of a file, and one vendor’s classification may differ from another’s. Malwarebytes’ detection page explains its riskware designation.

Could the warning be a false positive?
It is possible for security software to flag a legitimate administrative or reverse-engineering utility because it modifies software or resembles malicious behavior. But you cannot conclude that a particular keygen warning is a false positive without examining that exact file. A digital signature, a small file size, a clean-looking interface, offline operation, reports from other users, or a low number of scanner detections does not establish that it is safe. Multi-engine scan sites can provide useful signals, but they can miss new or obfuscated malware.

If a legitimate business tool is being blocked, obtain it from its publisher, check its published hash or signature if available, and ask the publisher or a qualified security professional to assess the specific file. For ordinary software, use the official publisher or Microsoft Store and keep protection enabled, as Microsoft recommends.
If you downloaded it but did not run it
- Do not open the executable or run anything inside the archive.
- Let your security software quarantine or remove any detection. Delete the download and empty the Recycle Bin; remove any matching crack, patcher, installer, or activator in the same package.
- Do not follow instructions to disable protection or add an exclusion.
- If you extracted the archive, opened a document or script, or are unsure whether anything launched, run a security scan.
- Get the application from its official publisher, use a legitimate license or free tier, or choose an open-source alternative.
Merely storing or viewing a ZIP or RAR archive normally does not run the Windows program inside it. Risk rises if you execute an included file, open a malicious document or script, use a vulnerable archive utility, or follow instructions to launch an installer. When in doubt, do not execute the contents and remove the archive.

If you ran it: treat it as a possible security incident
Running a file even briefly can be enough for it to download a payload, create persistence, or copy credentials. Lack of obvious symptoms does not rule out compromise; the FBI warns that malware in pirated software can record keystrokes or steal personal information.
- Contain the risk. If you see suspicious activity, disconnect the computer from the internet. Do not use it to sign in to email, banking, work, cloud storage, or your password manager. If it is a work or school device, contact IT or the security team immediately rather than trying to clean it yourself.
- Scan and remove. Allow your security software to quarantine or remove the detection, then run a full scan. If available, run its offline or boot-time scan. You can run a second-opinion scanner obtained directly from a reputable vendor’s official site. A clean scan does not prove that no data was stolen or that every change has been reversed.
- Check for changes. Review recently installed applications, browser extensions, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and security exclusions. Remove any exclusion made for the keygen or crack. Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance recommends removing unwanted applications and checking recent apps and browser add-ons when problems are suspected.
- Protect accounts from a known-clean device. Change important passwords, starting with email and password-manager accounts, then banking, cloud, work, and social accounts. Revoke active sessions or refresh tokens where services allow it, enable multifactor authentication, and contact your bank if payment or banking information may have been exposed. Do not change passwords from the potentially infected computer.
Consider a clean operating-system reinstall or professional incident-response help if you ran the file as administrator, it was identified as a trojan, infostealer, ransomware, or backdoor, security tools were disabled, unknown tasks or accounts appeared, malware returns after removal, or sensitive data may be at risk. A work device, or one holding financial, medical, business, or other sensitive information, deserves prompt professional attention.

Unexpected browser redirects or extensions, new applications, disabled security tools, unfamiliar startup items or scheduled tasks, unusual CPU, disk, or network activity, password-reset alerts, unknown account sessions, or files being encrypted or renamed all warrant investigation. None is required for an infection to exist: stealthy malware may show no obvious symptoms. A quarantined file also does not prove that nothing ran before quarantine.

Does the risk depend on the operating system?
The detection names above are Windows-specific, but the underlying risk is not. A malicious macOS or Linux executable, script, installer, or package can compromise a device when run with sufficient permissions. Do not treat a keygen as safe just because it targets a different operating system.
Safer ways to get the software
Download from the software publisher or an authorized source and use a legitimate license. Check for a free edition, trial, open-source replacement, or authorized older-version license. If the product has been discontinued, ask the publisher about legitimate archival installers or licensing options rather than relying on an unverified crack. For legal questions, the answer depends on the country, license terms, and conduct; unauthorized activation may breach a license and may have further legal consequences.
