Yes, but not worldwide. OpenAI says ChatGPT returned to WhatsApp in the European Economic Area (EEA) in July 2026. Its dedicated feature page also lists Switzerland, although OpenAI’s Help Center describes the rollout more narrowly as EEA. The official number is +1-800-242-8478. For U.S. and Canadian users, the number is confirmed as a phone-call service; that does not mean WhatsApp messaging is available there.
Availability can depend on the country code linked to your WhatsApp account and may roll out gradually. Check OpenAI’s official WhatsApp entry point before messaging a contact.
Where does ChatGPT on WhatsApp work?

That country-code detail matters if you are travelling, use dual SIMs, or keep a WhatsApp account tied to a number from another country. Your physical location alone may not determine whether the WhatsApp service appears.

OpenAI announced on July 13, 2026 that ChatGPT had returned to WhatsApp in the EEA, following the earlier shutdown. See the ChatGPT release notes and 1-800-CHATGPT Help Center article for current details.

What is 1-800-CHATGPT?
1-800-CHATGPT is an experimental way to interact with ChatGPT by phone or, where available, WhatsApp. The number is 1-800-242-8478, also written internationally as +1-800-242-8478. It is not a general OpenAI customer-service hotline. For account or service help, use the OpenAI Help Center.
How to use ChatGPT on WhatsApp
- Open OpenAI’s official WhatsApp feature page and use its entry point or QR code, or add +1-800-242-8478 as a contact.
- Open the conversation and confirm it is the verified ChatGPT contact. A familiar display name or a number copied from a post is not enough to establish that an account is genuine.
- Send a text question, dictate a question, or try a voice note. Where supported, you can also share a photo or file.
- If it does not respond, check regional availability and limits before trying again.
OpenAI says you can begin without a ChatGPT account. The WhatsApp feature page describes text messaging, voice notes, photo and file sharing, image understanding, image creation, web-based up-to-date information, and multiple languages. Do you need a ChatGPT account?
No account is required to start messaging the WhatsApp contact, according to OpenAI. Linking an account is optional and OpenAI says it can provide higher usage limits. The trade-off is that linking associates your phone number with your OpenAI account. OpenAI says phone numbers cannot currently be unlinked from accounts, so consider that before connecting one. OpenAI’s transition notice described the app and website as offering additional features such as voice conversations, deep research and file uploads. That notice predates the WhatsApp return, so it is historical context rather than a complete current feature comparison. If you need a broader account experience, use ChatGPT on the web or the official app.

The two channels share a number but have different availability and rules. In particular, U.S. calling does not establish that WhatsApp messaging works for U.S. accounts. OpenAI’s current calling and messaging details are in its Help Center article.
Why did WhatsApp access disappear and return?
OpenAI introduced the phone and WhatsApp experiences in December 2024. In October 2025, it announced that ChatGPT would leave WhatsApp after January 15, 2026, citing changes to WhatsApp’s policies and terms. That shutdown date passed; the service did not continue uninterrupted worldwide. OpenAI’s July 13, 2026 release note later announced a return in the EEA. The current regional rollout is a renewed arrangement, not evidence of universal availability.

OpenAI’s original transition announcement also described linking an account before the shutdown so past WhatsApp conversations could appear in ChatGPT history. That was a time-specific migration instruction. The current return page does not promise that every old conversation will be restored, so do not assume historical chats will reappear automatically.
If ChatGPT does not respond on WhatsApp
- Check the number’s country code. Your WhatsApp account may be outside the supported rollout even if you are physically in an eligible place.
- Allow for a gradual rollout. OpenAI says access may not reach every eligible account at once.
- Verify the contact. Start from OpenAI’s official feature page rather than trusting a number or profile shared elsewhere.
- Consider a usage limit. WhatsApp limits apply. The phone-call allowance is separate and currently 30 free minutes per month for U.S. and Canadian users.
- If you were blocked, use official support. OpenAI says access may be blocked for suspected Terms-of-Use violations or calls from unsupported regions. If you believe a block is mistaken, contact OpenAI through the Help Center widget.
- Try the official app or website. If the WhatsApp feature is unavailable or appears to have a service problem, use ChatGPT on the web or download the official app instead of repeatedly messaging the contact.
Privacy and reliability
Using WhatsApp is not anonymous: the interaction is tied to a phone number. If you link that number to an OpenAI account, it becomes associated with the account, and OpenAI currently says the number cannot be unlinked. For the separate phone-call service, OpenAI says conversations and transcripts may be stored and reviewed for a limited period for safety and abuse prevention. Do not assume that the same retention description applies to WhatsApp; the cited phone guidance is specifically about calls.

Avoid sending passwords, payment credentials, government ID numbers, medical records or confidential business material unless you have considered the applicable privacy terms. ChatGPT can make mistakes: independently verify consequential medical, legal and financial advice, travel or immigration requirements, current rules and deadlines, and identifications made from images. OpenAI says the service is for users aged 13 and older.
