Choose an API based on whether you need an editable document, a rendered file, or a structured generation workflow. With Google Docs and Drive, create a document, edit it with documents.batchUpdate, and use Drive to find or copy files. With PDFMonkey, submit a template and payload, then poll the queued job until its download is ready. Ema offers higher-level tools for outlines, sections, templates, and review. These are different approaches to document generation—not interchangeable endpoints.
What a document-generation API does
A document-generation API lets an application create or modify a document from code. The term covers several levels of work: creating an editable document, inserting and formatting content, filling a template to produce a downloadable file, or generating structured long-form content with review features.
Before choosing an API, decide what the result should be. If users need to keep editing the output in Google Docs, Docs and Drive are a natural fit. If the application needs a rendered file from a template and data payload, a generation service such as PDFMonkey may better match the workflow. For structured proposals or RFP responses, Ema documents higher-level outline, section, template, and collaboration operations.
Google Docs and Drive: create, edit, find, and copy
Google separates document content operations from file organization. The Docs API provides documents.create, documents.get, and documents.batchUpdate. Drive provides file discovery and copying. Consequently, “manage a document” in this stack can mean using both APIs rather than calling a single generation endpoint.

Create a blank document
Call POST /v1/documents through documents.create, typically supplying a title. The response contains the created document, including its documentId, which identifies the resource for subsequent reads and edits. Google’s [document concepts guide](https://developers.google.com/docs/api/concepts) describes this returned ID.
Insert and format content
Send edits to POST /v1/documents/{documentId}:batchUpdate. A batch can contain one or more requests for inserting text, applying formatting, creating lists, and making other structural changes. Google describes the batch as atomic: its updates are applied together, and the response includes results for the requests. This makes batchUpdate the core editing primitive, rather than a separate endpoint for every kind of content.
When composing multiple edits, use document indices and request order carefully: an insertion changes the positions of later content. Consult the [batchUpdate REST reference](https://developers.google.com/docs/api/reference/rest/v1/documents/batchUpdate) for supported request types and index semantics; do not assume a formatting request uses the same fields as an insertion request.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRead a document
Use GET /v1/documents/{documentId} via documents.get to retrieve the document’s current structure and content. Both this method and batchUpdate require a document ID. The [Docs API overview](https://developers.google.com/docs/api) describes creating and modifying documents, including automating document production and retrieving document attributes.
Find a document or copy one
Use Drive’s files.list when you need to find files, for example in a user’s My Drive; the Docs API is not a general file-discovery interface. Use Drive’s files.copy to duplicate an existing document. Google also notes that Docs does not create a document directly in a specified Drive folder. Handle folder placement through Drive operations, as described in Google’s [Docs API concepts guide](https://developers.google.com/docs/api/concepts).

A practical Google workflow
- Call
documents.createwith a title and retain the returneddocumentId. - Build the document body and formatting as one or more requests to
documents.batchUpdate. - Call
documents.getwhen the application needs to read back the current document. - Use Drive
files.listto find files orfiles.copyto duplicate an existing one; use Drive operations when folder placement is needed.
The REST paths are POST /v1/documents, GET /v1/documents/{documentId}, and POST /v1/documents/{documentId}:batchUpdate. The methods require Google API authentication and appropriate access to the relevant document or Drive files. The exact authorization setup and request bodies depend on the application and the operations it uses; follow the official method references rather than treating a document ID as authorization.
PDFMonkey: generate from a template and poll for completion
PDFMonkey documents an asynchronous lifecycle. Create a document using a template ID and payload; the initial document has status pending and no download URL. Then check its status until it reaches success, and use the download URL to retrieve the generated file. Its [Documents API page](https://pdfmonkey.io/api/documents) was updated September 24, 2026.
Recommended Free Tools
- Submit the template ID and data payload to create a generation job.
- Read the returned document status. Do not expect the downloadable file to be available in the initial pending response.
- Poll the document’s status according to the API’s documented request format and a reasonable interval for your application.
- When status is
success, use the supplied download URL.
The documented lifecycle establishes that generation is queued and that status polling is needed; it does not establish a fixed completion time or polling interval. Avoid assuming every request completes synchronously or that an initial response contains a finished file.
Ema: structured long-form generation and review
Ema’s v2 Document Generation API is aimed at structured documents such as proposals and RFP responses. Its reference documents outline generation from HTML or uploaded-document markdown; bulk section creation; template upload and CRUD; section profiles; HTML and thumbnail rendering; default-template management; duplication; extraction reruns; classification; and threaded comments. The reference was updated September 23, 2026: see the [Ema v2 Document Generation API](https://docs.ema.co/api-reference/v2/document-generation).
This is a higher-level surface than Google Docs editing primitives: the API reference describes operations around sections, templates, extraction, and review, not just insertion and formatting. Confirm the precise request and response schemas in the versioned reference before designing an integration; the documented feature list alone does not establish details such as execution timing or output availability for every operation.

How to choose between the approaches
| Need | Best fit from the documented capabilities | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Create an editable Google document and control its content | Google Docs API | Compose edits with batchUpdate; use Drive for file discovery, copying, and folder operations. |
| Generate a downloadable document from a template and payload | PDFMonkey | Generation is asynchronous: create, check status, then download after success. |
| Work with outlines, sections, templates, and threaded review | Ema v2 Document Generation API | Use its versioned reference to confirm the schemas and behavior for the particular operation. |
Compare APIs on five dimensions: abstraction level, synchronous versus queued execution, template control, lifecycle operations, and review features. Google offers low-level editing and pairs with Drive for file management. PDFMonkey’s described flow centers on template-based asynchronous generation and a download URL. Ema describes structured generation and collaboration operations. The right choice follows from the output and lifecycle your application actually needs.
Reliability, latency, and cost considerations
Do not treat “create” as synonymous with “ready to download.” Google’s create method returns a document resource that can then be edited or read. PDFMonkey explicitly queues generation and requires status checks before downloading. For any user-facing workflow, represent these states distinctly: submitted, pending, ready, and failed if the provider reports failure.
The cited API documentation does not provide comparative latency, service-level figures, or prices for these workflows. Plan around the behavior each API documents, and consult the provider’s current service terms and pricing separately before estimating production costs. For asynchronous jobs, avoid tight polling loops; use a bounded retry strategy suited to your application and handle timeouts without assuming the job itself has failed.

“Document not found” or an empty search result
- For Docs
getorbatchUpdate, verify that the ID is the returneddocumentId, not a title or a URL fragment. - For discovery, use Drive
files.list; Docs methods do not replace Drive file search. - Check that the authenticated user or application has access to the file. Possessing an ID does not itself grant access.
Edits fail or appear in the wrong place
- Check the document ID and the structure expected by the request type in the batchUpdate reference.
- Review indices and request order. Earlier insertions can shift the positions used by later edits.
- Group compatible changes into a batch and inspect the response for per-request results instead of assuming every edit succeeded as intended.
A generated file has no download URL yet
For PDFMonkey, that is expected while the document is pending. Poll its status and use the download URL only after success. The documented flow does not promise an immediate URL or fixed completion time.
A document is not in the expected Drive folder
Docs does not expose an option to create a document directly inside a specified folder. Use Drive operations for file organization after creation, and verify the destination through Drive.

The API does not match the desired template workflow
Google Docs requires the application to build content and formatting requests. If the requirement is template-driven generation, compare that approach with PDFMonkey’s template-and-payload flow. For section-oriented long-form documents and threaded review, inspect Ema’s documented operations and confirm that the specific features needed are present in the selected API version.
