No. AirTags do not require a monthly or annual subscription. You buy the tracker once and use Apple’s Find My network without an AirTag fee. You may still pay for a replacement battery or an optional holder, and you need a compatible Apple device and internet access to use it as intended.
AirTag prices in the U.S.
Apple’s second-generation AirTag, introduced in 2026, is listed at $29 for one or $99 for a four-pack in the United States. Apple offers free personalized engraving when you order through Apple.com or the Apple Store app. Those prices cover the trackers, not accessories. Apple’s FineWoven Key Ring is an optional $35 purchase; third-party holders are also available. Taxes, shipping, retailer offers, and prices outside the U.S. can change your checkout total. What you may pay for after buying one

Apple specifies a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. Check the battery packaging and Apple’s current AirTag specifications and support information if you need battery guidance.

AirTag is an item finder, not a standalone cellular GPS tracker. It uses Bluetooth to communicate nearby, and supported devices can use Ultra Wideband features for Precision Finding. When an AirTag is out of your device’s range, nearby Apple devices can relay an encrypted location report through the Find My network. You then see the reported location in Find My. Apple lists Bluetooth, Ultra Wideband, and NFC among the current model’s technologies; it does not list a cellular modem or AirTag data plan. See Apple’s technical specifications.

This also means AirTag does not promise a continuous, live position. A location may update when another device in the network detects the tag; in an isolated area with few nearby Apple devices, the map may show only an older location. The owner’s phone or tablet needs connectivity to retrieve updates.
What device do you need?
For the second-generation AirTag, Apple lists an iPhone with iOS 26.0 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 26.0 or later, plus an Apple Account. Requirements for older first-generation AirTags may differ, so check the model and its support page rather than relying on older compatibility advice. Apple’s current specifications provide the requirements.

A paid iCloud+ plan is not part of those requirements. Find My access and an Apple Account are not the same thing as paying for extra iCloud storage.

Can you share an AirTag?
Yes. Apple allows the owner to share an AirTag with up to five other people, for a total of six users per item, without an AirTag subscription. Sharing is not the same as transferring ownership, and participants need compatible Apple Accounts and devices. Apple’s current instructions also specify security and software conditions, including two-factor authentication and iCloud Keychain; account and operating-system restrictions can apply. Does AirTag work with Android?
AirTag is designed for setup and normal owner-side use with Apple hardware and Find My; it is not a full Android tracker. Android devices can help detect unknown trackers and may read the NFC information on an AirTag in Lost Mode, but those functions do not let an Android user manage an AirTag like an iPhone owner. If your household primarily uses Android, compare a cross-platform tracker such as Tile and confirm its current compatibility before buying.

- Cellular GPS tracker or safety service: More appropriate when you need independent cellular coverage, more frequent location updates, emergency features, or professional monitoring. Such services commonly involve a recurring plan, but that pays for a different kind of service than AirTag provides.
Life360 memberships are separate from AirTag ownership; you do not need one to use an AirTag. Consider a family-safety membership only if you want its broader services, and check Life360’s current plan page for pricing and features.

AirTag is intended to help locate objects such as keys, bags, luggage, wallets, or bicycles. Do not rely on it as a child-safety service, medical-alert device, pet tracker, or vehicle tracker when a situation calls for dependable live location, safety alerts, or emergency response. Its usefulness depends on nearby Apple devices, and anti-unwanted-tracking protections may alert someone when an unknown AirTag appears to be traveling with them. It is not a covert people-tracking device.

Android-only buyers should also account for the practical cost of Apple hardware: even with no subscription, an AirTag may be a poor-value purchase if you must buy an iPhone or iPad just to use it.
If setup or location updates fail
- You cannot add the AirTag: Confirm that you are signed in to your Apple Account, Bluetooth and Find My are available, the device has internet access, and its operating system meets the model’s requirements.
- The location is not changing: Check when it was last seen and remember that a remote update depends on the Find My network detecting the AirTag. Moving it to an area with more nearby Apple devices may help; it cannot force a live cellular update.
- Precision Finding is unavailable: Availability depends on compatible hardware and conditions. Try the map or play a sound if those options are available.
- The sound is hard to hear or the battery warning appears: Consider distance, obstruction, and background noise; replace the CR2032 battery if indicated.
- Sharing does not work: Review the Apple Account, security, iCloud Keychain, and operating-system requirements in Apple’s sharing guide.
- You receive an unknown AirTag alert: Treat it as an unwanted-tracking safety feature. It is not a charge for monitoring or evidence that you need a subscription.
