To make Google do a barrel roll, open Google Search, type do a barrel roll, and submit the search. The results page briefly rotates through a full turn, then settles back into place. Google still lists the effect among its Search Easter eggs.
How to do a barrel roll on Google
- Open Google Search in a web browser.
- Enter do a barrel roll in the search field.
- Press Enter or submit the search.
- Watch the results page rotate once and return to its normal orientation.
You can also search for Z or R twice and submit that query. It is an alternate way to trigger the same effect when the Easter egg is available. Google’s Search tips and tricks page currently lists “do a barrel roll” as an Easter egg.
What happens when you search it?
The Google results page performs a brief 360-degree spin. Your results are still search results; the page does not turn into a game, change your rankings, or rotate your monitor. It is a temporary visual animation, not a command that changes your computer. Refreshing or navigating away returns you to an ordinary page.

The phrase also describes a real aircraft maneuver, but the Google search effect is a screen animation. It is not an instruction to move a device or perform anything physically.

Why does Google do a barrel roll?
Google’s effect is an Easter egg—a hidden joke or playful response built into a product. It was publicly reported on November 3, 2011. Google told ABC News that a software engineer created it for entertainment and to demonstrate CSS3, a web presentation technology that enabled effects in modern browsers at the time. The page animation is the point; it is not a search feature with a practical task to complete.
Contemporary reports describe the results page making a 360-degree rotation. The available explanation supports describing it as a browser-rendered page effect, but not claims about the exact code or current technical implementation.

The Star Fox 64 reference
The Easter egg is generally recognized as a reference to Nintendo’s Star Fox 64, released for Nintendo 64 in 1997. In the game, Peppy Hare tells Fox McCloud to “do a barrel roll.” The alternate wording “Z or R twice” echoes the controller input associated with that maneuver.

That connection is supported by the wording and contemporary coverage, but Google’s quoted explanation focused on entertainment and CSS3; it did not announce a formal Nintendo collaboration. And when searching Google, you type the words “Z or R twice”—you do not need to press those keys on a controller.

Does the Google barrel roll still work?
Google’s current tips page still lists the Easter egg, so it remains an advertised Search trick. That does not guarantee that the animation will appear identically in every country, browser, device, app, or version of Search. Google can change or limit Easter eggs, and its listing does not provide a device-by-device compatibility guide.
For the clearest test, submit the phrase in Google Search using a current web browser. Results shown in an embedded search box, voice-search interface, browser start page, or another app may behave differently. Do not assume the same effect will work on another search engine.

If the animation does not appear
Try these checks in order:
- Check where you searched. Use Google Search itself, rather than a third-party simulator or an embedded search field.
- Submit the query. Typing the phrase alone will not trigger the effect; run the search.
- Try the alternate query. Search for Z or R twice.
- Try a different current browser or device. Older browsers may not support the presentation effects described when the Easter egg launched.
- Review animation and accessibility settings. Disabled page animations or a reduced-motion preference may suppress or alter motion. If you are sensitive to motion, skip the effect or use reduced-motion settings; Google does not publish a guarantee about exactly how this Easter egg responds to them.
- Temporarily check extensions. Content blockers or tools that change page styling, block scripts, or suppress animations can interfere with what appears.
- Refresh the page. The effect is temporary. If it still does not appear, it may not be available in your particular interface or at that time.
These are practical troubleshooting possibilities, not an official Google diagnosis for a missing animation.
Is it safe, and are barrel-roll websites the same thing?
The official Google effect is a temporary visual change to the Search page, not a command that physically rotates your screen or changes your device settings. Separate websites may imitate the spin or offer extra controls, but they are not Google Search and may have their own ads, features, or privacy practices. You do not need a third-party site to try Google’s Easter egg.

If you want another small Search effect, Google’s tips page also lists askew. Like the barrel roll, it is a visual Easter egg rather than a necessary search tool.
