Distance Technologies announced a €10 million seed round on September 24, 2024, led by GV, with FOV Ventures and Maki.vc also investing. The funding is intended to advance its glasses-free mixed-reality technology for automotive, aerospace and defense applications. The company’s early public evidence was a proof of concept—not a production-ready system or a broadly available product.

The funding: €10 million, or about $11.2 million at the time

Distance called the financing an oversubscribed seed round. The company published its announcement on September 26, 2024, reporting that it had closed the round two days earlier. Its announcement identifies GV as lead investor, alongside FOV Ventures and Maki.vc.

The widely reported $11.2 million figure is an approximate U.S.-dollar conversion of the €10 million raise, not a separate dollar-denominated round. GamesBeat used that conversion in its coverage of the funding. Distance had announced a $2.7 million pre-seed round in June 2024, led by FOV Ventures and Maki.vc, with other participants cited in the company’s launch materials. Because the amounts are in different currencies, they should not be added as if they were a single-currency total. The company was based in Helsinki, Finland at the time.

What Distance is building

Distance’s idea is to make a transparent surface—such as a vehicle windshield or aircraft window—serve as a mixed-reality display, without requiring the viewer to wear a headset or smart glasses. Rather than placing a simple flat graphic on the glass, the system is designed to generate a computer-created 3D light field: light is presented with directional and spatial information so digital content can appear at different apparent distances within the viewer’s scene.

Distance describes this as per-pixel depth control. In plain terms, different parts of a virtual image can be presented as though they occupy different depths, helping relate an instruction or marker to the real scene. Mixed reality means that digital objects or information are spatially integrated with the physical environment; it does not mean that the physical view disappears as it might in a fully virtual-reality experience.

The company also points to AI and sensor data as ways to decide what information appears and where—for example, placing a navigation cue or highlighting a relevant object. That software layer could matter as much as the optics, since an overlay is useful only if its underlying information is timely and correctly aligned with the real world.

Distance has used phrases such as “infinite per-pixel depth,” “crystal clarity” and “completely natural” to describe the concept. Those are company claims, not independently established performance results in the public funding materials. The announcement does not provide independent measurements of image quality, eye comfort or long-duration use.

Why target windshields, windows and cockpits?

Headsets and smart glasses can deliver immersive or hands-free information, but they add equipment that must be worn, maintained and fitted to each user. Weight, comfort, training and safety can be concerns, particularly for drivers, pilots and operators who need to retain an unobstructed view. An embedded display could avoid putting a device on the user’s head and potentially serve people looking through the same vehicle or cockpit surface.

That is not the same as eliminating hardware. A transparent-surface system still needs optical components, computing, sensors, calibration and installation. It also has to keep digital content legible without obscuring the real scene.

  • Automotive: Potential uses include navigation cues, driver-assistance information, hazard highlighting and cabin or passenger interfaces. In 2024, Distance said automotive OEMs were evaluating its technology, but did not name them or announce production adoption.
  • Aerospace: Cockpit displays, pilot situational awareness, simulation and sensor-fusion visualization are possible applications. The 2024 materials mentioned commercial and military cockpits but did not identify a production aircraft customer.
  • Defense: A vehicle windshield or transparent armor could potentially display navigation, sensor-derived information or other mission data. Defense buyers may value situational awareness, but deployment can involve long procurement cycles, ruggedization, security reviews, export controls and integration with existing systems.

These are target applications, not proof that the technology was already operating in a vehicle, aircraft or military system. Distance’s 2024 announcement described the technology as being explored by aviation companies and defense contractors, not as a deployed product.

What was actually demonstrated?

Distance emerged from stealth at Augmented World Expo USA 2024 and showed a proof of concept for what it described as its first commercial product. The public description was of viewing mixed-reality content through a transparent surface without a headset, glasses, phone or handheld device. The company’s launch materials and subsequent funding announcement characterize the work as a demonstrator or proof of concept.

That distinction matters. A demonstration can establish that an optical concept is worth investigating; it does not establish that a system is ready for vehicle production or flight certification. The public materials do not disclose specifications for resolution at the eye, brightness, contrast, field of view, refresh rate, latency, power use, viewing angle or depth accuracy. They also do not establish safety certification, production pricing, purchase orders, customer revenue or general availability.

For a serious OEM or government buyer, the next questions would include whether the image remains visible in bright sun and at night; how it performs with reflections, polarized sunglasses or protective eyewear; how large the usable eye box is; whether content stays aligned as the viewer moves; and how the system handles vibration, temperature, moisture and windshield replacement. Buyers would also need to assess cybersecurity, calibration, maintenance, sensor integration and human-factors risks. An inaccurate, delayed or overly dense overlay could add distraction rather than reduce it.

How it differs from existing display categories

Distance is best compared with categories of technology, rather than treated as a direct replacement for every XR product.

Category What it offers Key difference from Distance’s proposal
Conventional automotive HUDs Established ways to project a limited set of driving information into the driver’s view. Distance is proposing a broader transparent-surface light-field approach with controllable apparent depth. The question is whether the added capability justifies new integration work.
Head-mounted enterprise XR Flexible software and pilots that can be deployed without redesigning a windshield or cockpit. Wearables require users to wear equipment and are not necessarily suited to drivers, pilots or shared displays.
Industrial smart glasses Portable, hands-free instructions for an individual operator. They serve a mobile, user-by-user workflow rather than a potentially shared vehicle-mounted display.
Conventional cockpit displays Mature, familiar instrumentation with established certification paths. They use separate display surfaces, not a mixed-reality layer integrated with the transparent view.
Projection-based or waveguide AR Existing optical-display approaches with their own field-of-view, brightness and integration trade-offs. Performance depends on the specific architecture and use case; a like-for-like technical comparison requires measured specifications.

For a buyer, the central trade-off is straightforward: could a no-wearable, spatially integrated display improve a task enough to justify the cost, qualification work and complexity of embedding it in a vehicle or cockpit?

Why GV invested—and what that does not prove

GV’s role as lead investor gives Distance a prominent technology-investor endorsement. The investment thesis described the company as an open ecosystem for manufacturers and integrators, and points to an opportunity to connect physical environments with sensor data, AI and digital information. Distance’s founder Urho Konttori is identified as a co-founder of Varjo, giving the team relevant experience in professional XR.

Investor confidence is not a technical validation or a customer contract. A working commercial business still depends on optical performance, integration with OEM systems, safety and certification, manufacturing economics and a buyer’s willingness to redesign or modify a vehicle or cockpit around the display.

What happened after the 2024 announcement?

Distance’s company site, viewed in 2026, describes continuing work across automotive, defense and aerospace, including light-field HUDs, field-operator systems and visual-intelligence software. It lists later developments such as a Kia collaboration, work with Supacat and the Acuity platform. These are subsequent company-announced developments; they should not be read backward as evidence that a production vehicle or deployed defense system existed when the 2024 seed round was announced. See Distance’s company page for its current account.

The commercial path appears oriented toward OEMs, integrators, defense contractors and aerospace companies, rather than individual buyers. Distance does not publish retail pricing or a self-serve purchasing flow; its site is the route for a technical briefing or partnership inquiry: distance.tech.
