Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a legitimate, free Windows utility from Wagnardsoft. It removes AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel graphics-driver packages and related remnants when a normal uninstall or vendor clean-install option is not enough.
The exact DDU 18.0.8.4 build could not be verified through the official Wagnardsoft results available for this article. Wagnardsoft has an official page for DDU 18.0.8.1, and a later official page for DDU 18.1.4.0. Use the current Wagnardsoft download route unless you have a specific, verifiable reason to use 18.0.8.4. Do not guess an old-version URL or download a repackaged copy from a random mirror.
Where to download DDU safely
Start at the official Wagnardsoft website and follow its current DDU download or support link. Wagnardsoft says users should obtain DDU through authorized distribution channels and avoid unauthorized third-party hosting.
If you specifically need version 18.0.8.4 for reproducible repair work, an older Windows installation, or a previously successful procedure, verify that exact build through Wagnardsoft before downloading. A similarly named archive, mirror, or file such as a guessed DDU-18084 URL is not proof of authenticity.

Download authenticity checklist
- Check that the domain is spelled
wagnardsoft.com. - Confirm that the filename and version match the official page.
- Be suspicious of files that request payment, activation, a password, or an additional browser or software installation.
- Avoid cracked copies, file lockers, “driver updater” bundles, and aggressive free-download portals.
- Scan the file with Windows Security or another reputable security product. Wagnardsoft’s project materials acknowledge that antivirus false positives can sometimes occur, but that is not a reason to ignore every warning.
DDU itself is free. Payment is not required to download or use it.
What DDU does
DDU is a specialist cleanup tool, not a routine driver-updating application. It attempts to remove graphics-driver packages and associated leftovers, including relevant files, folders, registry entries, and Driver Store components. It supports AMD/ATI, NVIDIA, and Intel graphics.
DDU is independent software. It is not made by, owned by, or officially affiliated with AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel.

You do not need DDU for every routine update. It is most useful when a normal installation is failing, a driver is corrupted, crashes or black screens began after an update, you are changing GPU vendors, or you need a clean downgrade.

Installer or portable download?
DDU may be distributed as an installer or as a portable/self-extracting package. Intel’s DDU instructions recognize both formats.
- Installer: Run the package and use the shortcut it creates. This is simpler for occasional users.
- Portable/self-extracting package: Extract it, note the extraction folder, and launch the DDU executable from there. This is convenient for technicians and repeat use, but it is not a reason to assume every package behaves as a permanently portable application.
Requirements and compatibility
The official DDU 18.0.8.1 page lists these requirements:
- .NET Framework 4.8
- Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Windows 11
- 32-bit or 64-bit Windows
The project README describes .NET Framework 4.8 or newer and Windows 7 SP1 through Windows 11 for DDU versions from 18.0.4.7 onward. These are documented requirements for the cited releases, not a guarantee that every future Windows build or unusual hardware configuration will behave identically. Windows 7 and 8 are legacy platforms and may not have current graphics-driver support.
DDU is a Windows utility; these requirements do not imply support for Linux or macOS. Laptop hybrid graphics, OEM-customized drivers, eGPUs, and multi-GPU systems require extra care.

Prepare before running DDU
- Identify the GPU vendor and model. On a laptop, also identify the manufacturer’s recommended graphics package.
- Download the replacement driver before removing the current one. Use the official vendor or laptop manufacturer page:
- Create a restore point or backup. Wagnardsoft recommends having a recovery option before using DDU.
- Save work and close games, browsers, monitoring tools, overlays, and other applications.
- Disconnect from the internet if practical, or otherwise prevent Windows Update from immediately replacing the removed driver.
- Install DDU or extract its self-extracting package before entering Safe Mode.
Manual removal of the existing driver before using DDU is not required.
How to use DDU in Safe Mode
Safe Mode is the preferred environment for DDU because fewer driver-related services and applications are active.
Enter Safe Mode in Windows 10 or 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to System → Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
- Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode.
You can also hold Shift while selecting Restart, then use the same recovery menus. If Windows cannot start normally, reach these options through the Windows Recovery Environment. Avoid setting a permanent Safe boot option in msconfig unless you know how to undo it, because it can leave Windows starting in Safe Mode repeatedly.

- Launch the DDU executable.
- Close the initial options dialog if it appears.
- Set the device type to GPU.
- Select the correct vendor: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Choose Clean and restart for a normal clean reinstall.
- Choose Clean and shutdown when replacing the physical graphics card or preparing to power off the computer.
- Wait for DDU to finish. Do not interrupt the restart or shutdown.
DDU removes the existing graphics driver; it does not install its replacement. After Windows starts again, install the driver you downloaded earlier, restart if requested, and reconnect to the internet when appropriate.

NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel considerations
The basic DDU controls are similar, but the correct selection and replacement package depend on the system.
- NVIDIA: Select NVIDIA only when that is the driver being cleaned. Download a package matching the GPU and Windows version.
- AMD: DDU can clean Radeon graphics packages. If the system is a laptop, the OEM package may be preferable to a generic Radeon driver.
- Intel: DDU supports Intel graphics, but integrated graphics may be essential for the laptop’s display path. Obtain the correct Intel or OEM driver first.
On a hybrid-graphics system, determine whether you need to clean the integrated GPU, the discrete GPU, or both. Do not clean every detected GPU unnecessarily. Laptop manufacturers may customize power management, display switching, brightness, hotkeys, and sleep behavior; use the manufacturer’s driver if a generic package breaks those functions.

A temporary low resolution or Microsoft Basic Display Adapter entry can occur until the replacement driver is installed. Work through these steps:
- Restart Windows normally if it has not already restarted.
- Check Device Manager → Display adapters.
- Install the correct vendor or OEM driver.
- Check that the monitor cable is connected to the intended GPU output.
- For a newly installed card, confirm that auxiliary power connectors are attached.
- On laptops, install the manufacturer’s graphics package if the generic driver does not restore display switching or other functions.
- If Windows is unstable, return to Safe Mode and install the driver there, or use System Restore.
- If Windows will not boot, open the Windows Recovery Environment and restore the restore point or backup created before cleanup.
For a black screen, also check the monitor input, cable, BIOS primary-display setting, and whether the system is using an integrated/discrete graphics path. DDU cannot repair a failing GPU, defective video memory, inadequate power supply, overheating, damaged PCIe slot, bad cable, faulty monitor, or incompatible firmware configuration.

Other ways to remove a graphics driver
For a routine update that is working normally, use Windows’ normal uninstall process or the graphics vendor’s clean-install option. AMD also provides its own cleanup utility for supported situations. Manual Device Manager removal is possible, but it is generally less comprehensive and may leave packages or components behind.
DDU is the stronger option when the existing installation is corrupted, a vendor switch is involved, a rollback repeatedly fails, or standard removal has not resolved the conflict. It is not a guaranteed fix for every crash or black screen.
Important version conclusion
DDU 18.0.8.4 should be treated as a requested older build whose official availability needs confirmation, not as the latest release. The officially located nearby release is 18.0.8.1, while a later official Wagnardsoft page lists 18.1.4.0. A third-party TechSpot listing shows 18.1.5.6 updated July 22, 2026, but that listing should not replace Wagnardsoft as the primary download authority.
