If brightness is not working on your Mac, first check whether the problem is the built-in display, the keyboard, or an external monitor. Open Apple menu → System Settings → Displays, select the affected display, and try its Brightness slider. If the slider is missing, that may be normal for some monitors, TVs, projectors, or display modes—not a macOS fault.
Use the symptom guide below to choose the right fix. If the screen is completely blank rather than merely dim, use Apple’s blank-screen troubleshooting instead.
Identify what is failing
| Symptom | Likely area to check |
|---|---|
| Brightness keys do nothing | Keyboard, function-key behavior, display support, or software |
| The brightness slider is missing | Selected display, external-monitor support, or a display preset |
| The slider moves but the screen does not change | Display selection, connection, reference mode, firmware, or hardware |
| The screen is very dim but an image is visible | Brightness setting, monitor power or connection, HDR limiting, or panel issue |
| Brightness changes by itself | Automatic brightness, ambient-light sensing, True Tone, Night Shift, or XDR thermal limiting |
| An external monitor cannot be adjusted from macOS | The monitor may require its own controls or may not support software brightness adjustment |
| The built-in screen is black or blank | A startup or display problem, rather than an ordinary brightness-control issue |
Start by identifying whether the affected screen is built into a MacBook or is an external display connected to a Mac mini, Mac Studio, iMac, or MacBook. The available controls differ: a Mac mini or Mac Studio has no built-in panel, and many third-party monitors handle brightness themselves.

- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Displays.
- If more than one display is connected, select the screen you want to adjust.
- Move the Brightness slider, if it is available. You can also try Control Center → Display where that control appears.
- Try the brightness keys on the Mac keyboard. On some keyboards, you may need to hold Fn or Globe as you press the key, depending on the keyboard’s function-key setting.
- For an external monitor, try its physical buttons, rear joystick, or on-screen menu.
If the slider works but the keys do not, focus on the keyboard. If the keys and slider both fail, investigate display support, the selected screen, its connection, software, firmware, or hardware.

If the brightness slider is missing
A missing slider does not automatically mean macOS is malfunctioning. The options shown in System Settings → Displays vary by Mac and display. Some non-Apple monitors, TVs, and projectors do not expose brightness adjustment to macOS; use the display’s own controls or consult its manufacturer. Apple likewise notes that a non-Apple display may need to be adjusted through its built-in menu (Apple’s external-display guidance).
Check these possibilities before troubleshooting further:
- Wrong display selected: In Displays settings, select the screen whose brightness you want to change.
- Monitor does not support Mac control: Adjust brightness on the monitor itself. A third-party utility can help only if that exact monitor and connection expose a compatible control interface.
- Reference mode or preset: On supported Apple displays, some presets can make the ordinary brightness slider, keyboard controls, automatic brightness, True Tone, or Night Shift unavailable. Check the selected preset and its purpose in Displays settings. See Apple’s display preset guidance.
- Display not fully detected: A cable, adapter, hub, dock, or firmware issue may prevent the expected controls from appearing.
To prompt macOS to check for a connected screen, open System Settings → Displays and hold Option to reveal Detect Displays, then select it. This is most useful when a display is missing or recognized incorrectly.

If brightness keys do not work
First establish whether brightness can be changed another way. Move the slider in Displays settings or use Control Center if available. If the slider changes the built-in screen but the keys do not, the display is probably responding; the problem is more likely the keyboard, key behavior, or a remapping utility.

- On a Mac with a built-in keyboard, test those keys there before troubleshooting an external keyboard.
- For a wireless keyboard, test a wired keyboard if one is available. Check that the keyboard is connected and recognized.
- Try the brightness key both with and without Fn or Globe, as appropriate for that keyboard.
- Temporarily quit keyboard-remapping or shortcut utilities and test again.
- If brightness keys work on the built-in display but not on an external monitor, the monitor or its connection may not support Mac keyboard brightness control.
Do not rely on a generic Terminal command to reset brightness keys. Apple’s current support guidance does not provide a universal command for this problem, and behavior depends on the Mac, keyboard, display, and macOS version.
Fix an external display that is dark or will not adjust
For a non-Apple monitor, start with its own brightness control. Use its buttons or joystick to open the on-screen display menu and confirm brightness is not at minimum. A Mac may be able to send brightness commands to some monitors, but that depends on the monitor, connection, and supported control protocol; a utility cannot add support the monitor lacks.
Then isolate the connection:
- Confirm that the monitor is powered on and its power cable is seated.
- Disconnect and reconnect the video cable at both ends. If possible, test another cable.
- If the display is connected through a hub, adapter, or dock, connect it directly to the Mac temporarily.
- Try another compatible port on the Mac or display.
- Open System Settings → Displays, hold Option, and choose Detect Displays if shown.
- Put the Mac to sleep and wake it; if that does not help, restart the Mac.
An unsupported or unsuitable cable or adapter can leave a display dark or limit resolution or refresh rate. Check that the adapter and cable support the connection your Mac and monitor require. Apple describes these issues in its external-display troubleshooting guide. macOS updates can include firmware for Apple displays; for a third-party monitor, check the manufacturer’s instructions for firmware updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf macOS brightness control is unavailable, use the monitor’s own menu or the manufacturer’s official utility. Third-party brightness tools such as MonitorControl, Lunar, or BetterDisplay may work with compatible displays and connections, but compatibility is not guaranteed. They cannot fix a failed backlight, broken monitor buttons, an incompatible dock, or firmware that blocks software adjustment.

If automatic brightness does not work
The automatic-brightness option appears only when a Mac or display has an ambient-light sensor. If it is absent, the device may not support automatic adjustment; use manual controls instead. Apple explains this distinction in its brightness settings guide.
If the option is available but adjustment seems wrong:
- Turn Automatically adjust brightness off and back on in System Settings → Displays.
- Test in a noticeably brighter or darker room and make sure a case, tape, dirt, or another object is not covering the sensor.
- Restart the Mac and install available macOS updates.
- Test True Tone and Night Shift separately. They affect the display’s color and, in True Tone’s case, its intensity according to ambient conditions; neither replaces the brightness slider. Availability depends on the Mac and display. See Apple’s True Tone guidance and Night Shift guidance.
Accessibility display settings such as color filters, grayscale, increased contrast, or inverted colors can make the picture look wrong even when the luminance control works. If brightness changes but the image appears unusual, check System Settings → Accessibility → Display.

When an XDR display limits brightness
On a MacBook Pro with a Liquid Retina XDR display or on Apple Pro Display XDR, an on-screen warning icon and sudden dimming may indicate an intentional brightness limit. Apple says high ambient temperature combined with very bright content displayed for an extended time can trigger this protection; it does not by itself prove the display is defective. Follow Apple’s XDR brightness guidance:

- Close or hide windows showing HDR content.
- Quit resource-intensive apps and lower the room temperature.
- Use the Apple XDR Display or Pro Display XDR reference mode unless your work requires another mode.
- Put the Mac to sleep for 5–10 minutes, then wake it.
If the brightness limit continues in a room below 77°F (25°C), Apple advises seeking service.

Safe Mode is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed repair. It can help determine whether login items, display utilities, or keyboard-remapping software affect brightness. If brightness works in Safe Mode but not during a normal startup, review recently installed utilities and System Settings → General → Login Items.
The startup procedure depends on the Mac:
- Apple silicon: Shut down. Press and hold the power button until startup options appear. Select a startup volume, hold Shift, then select Continue in Safe Mode.
- Intel: Turn on or restart the Mac and immediately hold Shift until the login window appears.
Apple provides the Apple silicon procedure in its Safe Mode guide and startup-key details for Intel Macs in its startup combinations guide.
SMC and NVRAM: Intel-only, conditional steps
Do not reset the SMC as a routine first step. Apple’s traditional SMC reset procedure applies to older Intel-based Macs; Apple silicon Macs do not need that procedure. Consider it on an Intel Mac only after simpler checks fail, particularly if power, sleep/wake, sensors, or other hardware-control behavior is also abnormal. Follow Apple’s model-specific SMC instructions.

Resetting NVRAM/PRAM is also an Intel-Mac step, not a universal brightness fix. Apple lists Option–Command–P–R as the startup shortcut for Intel Macs. It can reset certain system settings, so use it only when persistent display or startup-setting problems make it relevant; consult Apple’s startup-key guidance.
Run Apple Diagnostics or seek service
Consider Apple Diagnostics if a built-in display remains dim after basic checks and restart, flickers or has uneven illumination, changes brightness unpredictably, or the issue follows the Mac after you have ruled out the monitor, cable, and dock. It may help identify a hardware fault, but it does not diagnose every brightness problem. Record any reference code and give it to Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or another qualified repair provider.
- Apple silicon: Shut down. Press and hold the power button until startup options appear. Release when Options appears, then press and hold Command–D.
- Intel: Turn on the Mac and immediately hold D. If that does not start Diagnostics, try Option–D.
Apple says that macOS Tahoe 26 and later may offer a choice of component-specific tests, such as the built-in display, keyboard, or trackpad; earlier macOS versions use a more automatic process. See Apple’s Apple Diagnostics instructions.
Seek service sooner if there is physical or liquid damage, persistent flickering, uneven backlighting, or a built-in display that stays dim across troubleshooting. If the problem occurs only with one external monitor, test that monitor with another source and the Mac with another display before concluding that the Mac needs repair. A missing macOS brightness slider on an unsupported third-party display alone is not evidence of a Mac hardware fault.
