DisneyNOW and Disney+ are separate services. DisneyNOW is primarily a TV-network companion for authenticated Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD viewing. Disney+ is a paid, on-demand streaming service for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and Disney+ originals.
Choose DisneyNOW when you need current Disney Channel-family programming or a live network feed and already have a participating cable, satellite, or live-TV provider. Choose Disney+ for movies, complete franchises, originals, downloads, and a conventional streaming-app experience. DisneyNOW’s mobile and streaming-device apps are no longer available; its current service is mainly a website.

DisneyNOW brings together programming from Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD. The site can include current episodes, older selected titles, shorts, clips, music videos, Disney Channel Original Movies, and an “On Now” live schedule. Its catalog changes, and Disney says episodes or movies can disappear when online rights expire.

Full episodes, live streams, and some early-access content generally require authentication with a participating TV provider. That can be a cable, satellite, or live-TV streaming package that carries the applicable Disney network. A key icon normally indicates that a title is locked. People without a qualifying provider may still see selected unlocked episodes and clips, but that is not the same as unrestricted free streaming. DisneyNOW also contains advertising.
In 2026, DisneyNOW should not be treated like a normal app-based streaming service. Disney’s help documentation says its mobile and streaming-device apps are no longer available, and games are no longer offered on the website. Use DisneyNOW.com in a supported desktop or mobile browser instead. Disney lists browser requirements such as Edge 80+, Firefox 71+, Chrome 80+, Safari 13+, iOS Safari 11+, and Android Chrome 80+, although an old minimum version does not guarantee playback on every smart-TV browser.
What is Disney+?
Disney+ is a paid direct-to-consumer service built around Disney’s film and television brands. Its library includes Disney and Pixar animation and live-action titles, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, The Simpsons, and Disney+ originals. Depending on market and plan, bundles can also provide access to Hulu and ESPN-related services or content.

Disney+ is not a promise that every Disney title or every Disney Channel episode is available. Rights, release windows, region, plan, and the title’s distribution strategy all matter. Search the service in your country before subscribing for one specific show.

Disney+ supports profiles, content-rating controls, and broad device coverage. The Premium plan listed by Disney includes downloads on up to 10 devices and up to 4K UHD/HDR and Dolby Atmos capability where supported. Standard on-demand playback on Premium is marketed without ads, but Disney notes that selected live or linear programming may still contain advertising or sponsorship.
Where should you watch each type of content?
The latest Disney Channel, Disney Junior, or Disney XD episode
Start with DisneyNOW. A current network episode may be available there soon after broadcast, but timing, provider authentication, geography, and online rights apply. Do not assume that a Disney+ subscription unlocks the episode or that every episode appears on Disney+.
Live Disney Channel-family television
DisneyNOW’s “On Now” pages are the relevant option when your participating TV provider carries the network. Disney+’s Streams feature is different: it offers continuous curated streams such as Disney+ Playtime, The Simpsons, and ABC News for eligible U.S. subscribers. It is not automatically a full replacement for an authenticated Disney Channel, Disney Junior, or Disney XD cable feed.

Disney+ is the clear fit for Disney and Pixar films, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic programming, and Disney+ originals. DisneyNOW may carry selected Disney Channel Original Movies, such as titles in the current movie section, but its library is network-focused and changes over time.

Is a show on both services?
Sometimes, but never assume it. The services have different catalogs and rights arrangements. Search Disney+ directly and check the DisneyNOW listing for the exact season or episode.
Cost: “free” DisneyNOW versus paid Disney+
DisneyNOW has no separate subscription charge. However, full access generally depends on a paid participating TV-provider package, so the household may already be paying for the service indirectly. If your provider is not listed, DisneyNOW says you may be limited to unlocked clips and selected episodes.
Disney+ requires a subscription. Around August 18, 2026, Disney’s U.S. pricing help page displayed Disney+ with Ads at $11.99 per month, Premium at $18.99 per month, and Premium at $189.99 per year. The same page also showed a $6.99 monthly entry in an add-on or plan context, so do not copy a single number as a universal new-subscriber price. Plan names, promotions, bundles, taxes, and regional pricing change; verify the live selector at DisneyPlus.com before purchase.

Disney+ and Hulu or ESPN bundles can be useful if you already want those services, but a bundle does not automatically provide DisneyNOW’s TV-provider authentication. If DisneyNOW is your only goal, buying a large bundle may add cost without solving the problem.

Device and app differences
The discontinued DisneyNOW apps are the biggest practical difference in 2026. Do not expect a current DisneyNOW app on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, game consoles, or smart TVs. The supported route is a desktop or mobile browser at DisneyNOW.com, and a smart-TV browser may not work reliably even if it meets the documented version minimum.
Disney+ remains a conventional app-based service on many supported connected TVs, streaming players, phones, tablets, and web browsers. Exact compatibility and features vary by device and region; consult Disney’s getting-started guidance.

DisneyNOW is useful for a child who follows current Disney Channel or Disney Junior programming. It offers profiles and a Disney Junior mode, and it keeps channel-based live viewing close to the TV experience. Its advertising and browser-only access may be drawbacks.
Disney+ is better for long-form, on-demand viewing across many brands. Profiles and content-rating settings help separate children’s viewing from adult profiles, and downloads on eligible plans are useful for travel. Neither service is automatically “safe”; adults should configure ratings, review profiles, and supervise viewing as appropriate.

How to sign in to DisneyNOW
- Go to DisneyNOW.com in a supported browser.
- Select the sign-in or TV-provider option.
- Choose your participating cable, satellite, or live-TV provider.
- Enter that provider’s username and password, not your Disney+ login.
- Return to the episode or live stream and play the unlocked content.
If your provider is missing, you cannot add access with a Disney+ subscription alone. Provider participation can change, so check DisneyNOW’s help page and your provider’s support information.
Which service should you choose?
Choose DisneyNOW when:
- Your household already pays for a participating TV provider.
- You want current Disney Channel, Disney Junior, or Disney XD episodes.
- Live network viewing matters.
- Browser viewing is acceptable.
Choose Disney+ when:
- You want Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and originals.
- You prefer on-demand browsing over a linear channel feed.
- You need a broad app-based experience or offline downloads.
- You do not have a participating TV provider.
Use both when:
A child watches newly aired network programming while the rest of the household wants Disney+ films and franchises. If your existing TV package already unlocks DisneyNOW, keeping both can be sensible because the marginal DisneyNOW cost is effectively zero. Avoid both if you only watch movies and originals or rarely use current Disney Channel content.
Common problems
- “I pay for Disney+, so why is DisneyNOW locked?” DisneyNOW checks a participating TV-provider subscription, not merely a Disney+ account.
- “I cannot find the app.” The mobile and streaming-device apps have been discontinued; use the website.
- “My provider is not listed.” Only unlocked clips and selected episodes may be available.
- “Today’s episode is missing.” Authentication may have expired, online rights may not yet be active, the title may not be licensed online, or the episode may have left a limited rights window.
- “Disney+ has streams, so it must replace DisneyNOW.” Disney+ Streams and DisneyNOW’s authenticated network feeds are different features.

Is DisneyNOW included with Disney+?
