Disney+ is supported on Roku, but the right fix depends on where playback fails. Test another Disney+ title and another Roku app first; then check the network, update the app and Roku software, restart, reinstall Disney+, and verify your account and Roku model. The steps below separate app, internet, account, HDMI, and hardware faults so you can start with the least disruptive remedy.

Identify the failure first

Symptom Likely category First action
Disney+ is missing Installation, region, Roku account, or compatibility Search the Roku Streaming Store and check the model in Settings > System > About.
The app will not open, shows a black screen, or spins forever Outdated software, corrupted app, network, or service issue Test another app, update Roku, restart, then reinstall Disney+.
Only one movie or episode fails Title-specific, rights, profile, or service problem Play another Disney+ title.
Every Disney+ title fails Disney+, account, app, network, or compatibility Test Disney+ elsewhere and check for a provider notice.
Every Roku app fails Roku connection, router, or Roku system Run Roku’s connection test and restart the network.
Sign-in repeatedly fails Wrong MyDisney account, expired subscription, or activation issue Sign in again and verify the subscription and billing party.
Menus work but video is black or shows HDCP/HDMI errors HDMI cable, input, receiver, soundbar, or display path Connect the Roku directly to the TV and try another input and cable.
Disney+ With Ads will not stream App version or device compatibility Perform Disney’s Roku system-update procedure.

Roku recommends trying another title and another app to distinguish a title, service, Roku, or network problem: Roku playback troubleshooting.

Run two quick tests

  1. Play a different Disney+ title. If it works, the original title may be the only affected item.
  2. Open another streaming app on the same Roku. If it also fails, troubleshoot the Roku connection or system rather than Disney+ alone.

If possible, try Disney+ on a phone, browser, or another TV. A failure on several devices with the same account points toward Disney+, the subscription, or the internet service. Success elsewhere but not on one Roku points toward that Roku’s software, installation, model, HDMI path, or local network connection.

Check Roku’s internet connection

  1. Press Home.
  2. Open Settings > Network > About to view the connection status.
  3. If disconnected, choose Set up connection and reconnect to Wi-Fi.
  4. Choose Check connection.

“Connected” does not always mean the Roku has usable internet access. If other devices compete for bandwidth, pause large downloads or streams. A Roku that works only after a router reboot may be experiencing congestion, filtering, or router instability rather than a defective Disney+ app. Disney’s streaming guidance covers connection testing and recommendations without establishing one universal speed requirement: Disney+ streaming troubleshooting.

Update Disney+ and Roku

Update the Disney+ app

  1. From Home, highlight Disney+.
  2. Press the Star button.
  3. Select Check for Updates.
  4. Reopen Disney+ when the check completes.

Update Roku software

  1. Go to Settings > System > Software update.
  2. Select Check now.
  3. Allow the update to finish, then try Disney+ again.

Menu wording can vary by Roku OS version. Disney’s Roku-specific instructions use Home > Settings > System > System Update and are particularly relevant when streaming Disney+ With Ads: Disney’s Roku update guidance.

Restart Disney+

Highlight Disney+, press Star, and choose Restart if that option appears. Otherwise return to Home and open the app again.

Restart a Roku player

Use Settings > System > System restart.

Roku Ultra, Ultimate Streaming Player - 4K Streaming Device for TV
  • Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
  • The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Perform a physical restart

  1. Turn off or disconnect the Roku.
  2. Unplug its power for about 10 seconds.
  3. Reconnect it directly to a power outlet and try Disney+.

This is a restart, not a factory reset; it does not erase your accounts or settings. Roku documents these procedures in its playback guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Power-cycle the modem and router

  1. Close Disney+.
  2. Unplug the modem and router.
  3. Wait 10 seconds.
  4. Reconnect them to power and wait several minutes for internet service to return.
  5. Restart the Roku and open Disney+.

Do not casually press a router’s physical Reset button: on many models it performs a factory reset. Use the manufacturer’s normal reboot procedure instead. Rebooting the network interrupts every connected device, so do it after app and Roku checks.

Remove and reinstall Disney+

  1. Press Home and highlight Disney+.
  2. Press Star and select Remove app (or Remove channel).
  3. Confirm, then restart the Roku.
  4. Open the Roku Streaming Store, find Disney+, add it again, and sign in.

Reinstallation clears local app state and may require activation again; it does not cancel a Disney+ subscription. If Disney+ cannot be found afterward, check the Roku account, region, network, and compatibility. Roku’s documented procedures are in its playback guide and app-feature guide. Do not factory-reset the Roku before trying this step.

Check sign-in, subscription, and billing

  • Sign out and sign back in with the current MyDisney email and password.
  • Confirm that the subscription is active and that you are using the intended account.
  • If you subscribed through Roku Pay, review active subscriptions at my.roku.com/subscriptions.
  • In Disney+ account settings, check Subscription and Payment Method to identify whether Disney or Roku handles billing.

Disney explains Roku billing and account management here: Disney+ on Roku. Do not create a second account as a first-line fix; it can split viewing history or create duplicate subscriptions.

Verify that the Roku is supported

Find the model and software version at Settings > System > About, then compare the device with Disney’s current supported-device list. Avoid relying on old third-party model lists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An older Roku TV can still work as a television while no longer meeting an app’s software or playback requirements.
  • A supported model may still fail if its Roku OS cannot update.
  • Television manufacturer and age can affect Roku TV update availability.
  • A newer external Roku player may be cheaper than replacing an otherwise functional TV.

Fix black screens, HDCP errors, and video-only failures

HDMI troubleshooting matters when Disney+ menus open but playback has no picture, flickers, or reports HDCP. It is not the normal fix for an app that will not launch or a sign-in error.

Is Disney+ down?

Do not infer a universal outage from one television. If one title fails, try others. If all Disney+ titles fail while other Roku apps work, check Disney’s website or support notices. If Disney+ fails on Roku and another device, the service, account, or internet provider becomes more likely. If every Roku app fails, focus on Roku and the network. A current outage claim requires a current Disney notice or the same failure observed across multiple devices and networks.

When to contact Disney+ or Roku

Contact Disney+

Contact Disney when other Roku apps work but Disney+ alone fails, or when the issue concerns sign-in, subscription, payment, content availability, captions, or playback across several devices. Roku directs app-specific sign-in and playback cases to the streaming service: Roku app troubleshooting.

Contact Roku

Contact Roku when every app fails, the device cannot connect or update, the Streaming Store will not open, or the player repeatedly reboots, overheats, or fails outside Disney+.

Have these details ready: Roku model, Roku OS version, Disney+ app version if shown, exact error text, whether other apps work, results on another device or network, and when the problem began.

When replacement hardware makes sense

Buy a new player only after the Roku cannot install current software, is absent from Disney’s supported list, fails with multiple apps, or repeatedly crashes and cannot maintain a connection. An external player can extend the life of a functional older Roku TV; it will not fix a Disney+ outage, billing problem, or Wi-Fi fault.

The Bottom Line

Start with another title and app, then check the connection, update, restart, power-cycle, and reinstall in that order. Verify the account, supported model, and HDMI path before escalating. Replace the Roku only when it is unsupported, cannot update, or fails broadly across the device.
