First click Discord, then press Ctrl + Shift + F on Windows or Linux. On a Mac, try Command + Shift + F. If nothing changes, Discord may not be in its own fullscreen mode: a maximized window, a fullscreen browser, or a fullscreen stream needs a different fix.
Identify which kind of fullscreen you’re seeing
“Fullscreen” can describe several different states. Identifying the right one helps you avoid closing an active call or stream unnecessarily.
- Discord app fullscreen: Discord fills the display and its normal window frame may be hidden.
- Maximized window: Discord occupies the desktop, but it is still a regular window. Look for a title bar or restore control.
- Browser fullscreen: Discord is open in a browser, and the browser has hidden its tabs and address bar.
- Fullscreen media or Activity: A stream, video, shared screen, or Activity fills the display while Discord’s main window may remain normal.
Try the least disruptive fixes first
Toggle Discord’s app fullscreen
- Click the Discord window so it has focus.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + F on Windows or Linux. Discord’s official community support has identified this as its fullscreen toggle, though the reference is an older community answer rather than a current dedicated shortcut guide: Discord community support thread.
- On macOS, try Command + Shift + F. Treat it as a command to try; the cited Discord support thread confirms the Windows shortcut, not a current Mac specification.
Exit a fullscreen video, stream, or Activity
Press Esc once, or move the pointer to reveal the media controls and choose the exit-fullscreen control. Activities can have their own exit control in the voice-channel controls; see Discord’s guide to using Activities. If a game or overlay has focus, close or leave that layer before trying the Discord shortcut again.

Restore a maximized window on Windows
If the window has a title bar or appears maximized rather than frameless, use its restore button. You can also press Alt + Space to open the Windows window menu, then choose Restore. Windows’ Windows + Up Arrow and Windows + Down Arrow can also change a window’s maximized or restored state; these are operating-system controls, not Discord shortcuts.

Exit browser fullscreen
If you use Discord in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or another browser and its tabs and address bar are hidden, press F11 on Windows or Linux, or use the browser’s View menu. F11 is for browser fullscreen; it may not affect the Discord desktop app’s fullscreen mode.
If the controls do not respond
Check focus and responsiveness
Click Discord, press Esc, then switch away and back with Alt + Tab on Windows or Command + Tab on Mac. If Discord does not respond to clicks or typing, it may be frozen; repeated shortcut presses will not help while the app is unresponsive. A hidden Windows taskbar alone does not prove Discord is fullscreen: Windows may be set to auto-hide it, or another window may be covering it.

Refresh the Discord client
If Discord still accepts keyboard input but its interface looks wrong, refresh it with Ctrl + R on Windows or Linux, or Command + R on macOS. Discord lists these commands in its desktop voice and video troubleshooting guide. Refreshing reloads the client interface; it is not the same as fully quitting and reopening Discord.
Quit and relaunch only if needed
Fully quitting Discord can end an active call or stream, so try the window and media controls first.

- macOS: If Discord responds, press Command + Q. If it does not, press Option + Command + Esc, select Discord, and choose Force Quit.
- Open Discord again and check whether its window is restored.
Discord’s troubleshooting guide recommends completely exiting and restarting the affected program when troubleshooting client problems. Force-ending is a last resort because it abruptly ends the session.
If Discord reopens in fullscreen
Close Discord fully, then reopen it and check the window. If fullscreen returns, look for something reapplying the state before resetting local data:

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
- Check whether a stuck Ctrl, Shift, or F key, keyboard remap, macro, Stream Deck profile, or gaming utility is sending a fullscreen shortcut.
- Temporarily disable overlays or remapping tools to see whether the behavior changes.
- Test Discord in a browser. If the web client behaves normally while the desktop app does not, the desktop client or its saved local state is more likely involved. Browser fullscreen may still need to be exited separately.
- Consider whether the issue began after an app, operating-system, display-driver, or monitor change. With multiple displays, check which monitor Discord is using before changing display settings.
Update Discord and your operating system if the problem persists. Clearing local Discord data or reinstalling should be a last resort, not the first fix: clearing data can remove cached information and sign you out, and reinstalling is not a guaranteed solution. Quit Discord completely before considering any local-data change, and do not delete folders unless you are certain they belong to Discord.
When to contact Discord support
If the problem continues after the shortcut, focus checks, refresh, and a clean restart, use Discord’s known-issues and troubleshooting hub to find the appropriate reporting route. The available information does not establish that a current, general Discord fullscreen bug is responsible.
