DirectStorage is a game-developer API, not a Windows app or setting you need to switch on. A game must be built to use it; when it is, the technology can streamline asset loading and streaming, particularly on an NVMe SSD. Windows 11 is Microsoft’s recommended platform for its latest storage optimizations, though Microsoft has also documented compatibility with Windows 10. For players, the practical steps are to check whether a specific game supports DirectStorage, install it on a suitable drive, and keep Windows and graphics drivers current.

What DirectStorage is

DirectStorage is part of the DirectX family: an API and runtime that game developers can integrate into a title’s asset-loading system. It is designed to handle large numbers of storage requests efficiently, especially the many small, parallel reads that fast NVMe drives can deliver. Microsoft describes its aim as reducing storage-I/O overhead and improving the path from a drive to game assets. Microsoft’s technical overview explains the design.

It is not the same as owning an SSD, using DirectX 12, or running Windows 11. Those may be relevant parts of a compatible setup, but the game itself must implement DirectStorage. Having suitable hardware does not add the feature to a game that was not made to use it.

What it can change in a game

In a conventional asset-loading pipeline, the game requests data, the operating system and storage stack handle the reads, and the CPU often coordinates work and decompresses the data before it is passed along toward the GPU. That approach can leave overhead in the way when a game needs to request many small assets from a fast drive.

DirectStorage provides a batched, asynchronous model for submitting and completing requests. In suitable games, that can reduce I/O overhead and help the engine load or stream assets more efficiently. The intended benefits are loading and asset-streaming performance—not a general boost to rendering or frame rate.

GPU decompression

Game assets are often compressed to save storage space. They have to be decompressed when the game needs them. DirectStorage 1.1 added GPU decompression support using GDeflate, allowing supported workloads to move some of that work from the CPU to the GPU. Microsoft says GDeflate’s independently compressed 64 KiB tiles support parallel decompression.

The active path depends on the game, hardware, drivers, and workload. It may use an optimized GPU path, a GPU fallback, or CPU decompression. DirectStorage 1.2 added GetCompressionSupport() so developers can query available compression support; it does not mean every game exposes that information to players. See Microsoft’s DirectStorage 1.1 announcement and 1.2 release notes.

None of this guarantees instant loading. The result also depends on the game engine, asset layout, compression, CPU and GPU work, memory, shader compilation, background activity, and whether storage was the bottleneck in the first place. DirectStorage does not promise a universal loading-time reduction or higher FPS.

Requirements: separate Windows, hardware, and game support

  • A DirectStorage-enabled game: This is essential. A game’s own requirements and support documentation determine whether it runs on your system.
  • Storage: NVMe is the practical target for the largest potential benefit. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 feature requirements specify an NVMe SSD using the Standard NVM Express Controller driver for storing and running games that use DirectStorage. Microsoft has also documented compatibility with slower storage; compatibility does not mean the same performance benefit.
  • Graphics: The stated Windows 11 baseline is a DirectX 12 GPU with Shader Model 6.0 support. Do not confuse that with DirectX 12 Ultimate: Microsoft does not list Ultimate as a DirectStorage requirement. GPU decompression behavior and vendor-specific optimizations can still vary.
  • Operating system: DirectStorage games can be compatible with Windows 10 as well as Windows 11, subject to each game’s requirements. Microsoft’s earlier compatibility announcement specified Windows 10 version 1909 and later for games built with the SDK. Windows 11 is the safer recommendation for the latest storage-stack optimizations.
  • Drivers: Keep the graphics driver current, particularly when investigating performance or a game’s reported decompression path. Driver support may affect vendor-specific optimized paths.

These are not interchangeable checkboxes. A compatible OS and GPU cannot make an unsupported title use DirectStorage; an enabled title may still work on slower storage, but with less of the benefit it was designed to deliver.

Do you need to install or enable it?

Usually, no. Players do not normally install a separate DirectStorage application, download the developer SDK, or turn on a Windows setting. The developer integrates the API, and the game’s normal distribution generally supplies the runtime components it needs. Microsoft provides the SDK and related packages for developers, not as a consumer performance utility. See the DirectStorage downloads page.

How to check whether a game supports it

  1. Look for an explicit statement in the game’s official system requirements, technical documentation, or patch notes.
  2. Check developer or publisher announcements for the title—not general Windows or hardware marketing.
  3. If the game has a benchmark or diagnostics screen, use it for any DirectStorage or decompression-path details it provides.
  4. Treat load times, frame times, and storage activity as supporting observations, not proof that the API is active.

An SSD requirement does not prove DirectStorage support. Nor do DirectX 12 support, Windows 11, or an NVMe installation by themselves. Conversely, a game that implements DirectStorage may still run on slower storage through compatibility or fallback paths.

DirectStorage versions: what matters to players and developers

DirectStorage version numbers refer to the API/SDK, not the Windows version, game version, or graphics-driver version. Those are separate parts of the compatibility picture.

Is an NVMe upgrade worth it?

It can be—but DirectStorage alone is not a reason to buy the most expensive SSD you can find. Consider the whole storage situation:

Your situation Practical takeaway
Your games are on an HDD Moving them to NVMe can be a substantial overall upgrade, whether or not a specific game uses DirectStorage.
You use a SATA SSD NVMe may help some workloads, but the improvement depends on the title and whether storage limits its loading or streaming.
You already have a healthy NVMe SSD A higher-priced or newer PCIe-generation drive may make little visible difference in a game that is not storage-limited.
Your drive is nearly full or overheating Address capacity and thermal throttling before judging performance. Peak sequential speed alone does not predict game results.
Your laptop has one storage slot Capacity, cooling, compatibility, and migration effort may matter more than headline speed.

DirectStorage is one possible part of the case for NVMe in a modern gaming PC. Capacity, replacing an HDD, general responsiveness, and the games you actually play are more useful reasons to weigh an upgrade. Do not buy a premium SSD solely to activate a feature that depends on title-specific support.

Troubleshooting without chasing the wrong fix

  • “My PC supports it, but the game doesn’t.” That is expected if the game has not integrated the API. Hardware readiness is not game support.
  • “The game is on an SSD, so DirectStorage must be active.” Not necessarily. Confirm support in the game’s own documentation.
  • “The benchmark reports CPU decompression.” That can be a legitimate fallback path, depending on the game and available hardware or driver support.
  • “A faster SSD did not cut load times.” Storage may not have been the bottleneck. CPU decompression, shader compilation, serialized engine work, caching, background processes, or thermal throttling can dominate.
  • “The game works on an HDD, so DirectStorage is broken.” Compatibility and best-case performance are different. A title can remain usable on slower storage while delivering less benefit than on NVMe.
  • “I installed the SDK, but the game launcher shows no change.” The SDK is for developers; it cannot add the API to a game that was not built to use it.

If a DirectStorage-enabled game reports an error, start with its own support instructions. Then check that it is installed on the intended drive, Windows is using the Standard NVM Express Controller driver where relevant, the GPU supports DirectX 12 and Shader Model 6.0, the graphics driver is current, and the game files are intact. These checks do not replace title-specific requirements.

For developers

Developers can get the SDK, redistributable, documentation, and sample projects from Microsoft’s API downloads page and GitHub repository. The repository includes HelloDirectStorage, BulkLoadDemo, GpuDecompressionBenchmark, and EnqueueRequestsDemo. The developer’s work includes choosing asset formats and I/O patterns, handling supported decompression paths, and testing on the intended storage, GPU, and driver combinations. DirectStorage normally uses unbuffered I/O; the optional buffered I/O added in 1.2 is aimed at legacy HDD scenarios, not a universal performance switch.

For the most current package status, consult Microsoft’s DirectStorage API downloads page; for platform requirements, consult the Windows 11 feature requirements. Both can change over time.
