Sometimes—but not universally. Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) could make Android apps feel more responsive than some conventional emulator setups, especially through hardware-assisted graphics and Windows desktop integration. It did not turn Android apps into native Windows software or guarantee better performance than a phone. There is also an important current caveat: Microsoft and Amazon ended official WSA and Amazon Appstore availability on March 5, 2025, so this is now a question about a legacy feature, not a normally downloadable Windows component.
What WSA did—and what it did not do
WSA was a Windows 11 component that ran Android apps inside a virtualized Android environment. It powered the Amazon Appstore integration and let supported apps appear as individual windows, with shortcuts in Start and access to familiar Windows input and windowing. Microsoft described it as the component behind Android apps and the Amazon Appstore catalog on Windows 11 (Microsoft’s 2021 announcement).
That integration did not mean an Android app was converted into a native Windows application. Virtualization lets a guest environment use some host resources, but it still has compatibility boundaries and overhead. That differs from native execution, where software is built to use Windows APIs directly, and from emulation, which reproduces hardware or operating-system behavior and can add overhead of its own.
WSA was based on the Android Open Source Project, not Google’s complete Android package with Google Mobile Services. An app could install and still fail at runtime if it relied on Google Play Services, particular processor instructions, device sensors, DRM, cellular features, or anti-emulator checks. Sideloading an APK did not supply missing Google APIs.

Where WSA could feel faster
Starting apps
WSA could keep a shared subsystem running while Android apps opened in separate windows. That could avoid the extra step of launching a full phone-shaped emulator interface for every session, and repeated launches might feel quicker when the subsystem was already active. But no universal startup advantage is established: cold starts, app initialization, available memory, storage speed, and WSA’s resource mode all affect the result.
Graphics
WSA supported hardware-accelerated graphics paths. Windows’ virtualization stack can share GPU resources with virtualized workloads through GPU paravirtualization (Microsoft’s GPU virtualization documentation). That can be smoother than software rendering or a poorly configured emulator; it is not evidence that WSA outperformed every emulator or physical Android device.

Multitasking and desktop workflow
Individual app windows, Start-menu access, and ordinary Windows keyboard and mouse input made it easier to use an Android app beside desktop software without navigating a separate virtual phone desktop. This is a workflow advantage, not proof of higher frame rates or faster app processing.
Networking and storage
A PC’s network connection and SSD could help particular workloads, but virtual networking and compatibility layers can also add latency or cause problems. Neither faster networking nor faster file access should be assumed without measuring the specific app and setup.

What determines performance
There is no meaningful single answer to “Is WSA faster?” without naming the app, PC, settings, and comparison. Launch time, input response, frame rate, and background reliability are different measures; an app can improve on one and not another.

Official WSA availability ended in 2025
Microsoft and Amazon ended official distribution of WSA and the Amazon Appstore through the Microsoft Store on March 5, 2025. Amazon announced the end of Windows 11 Appstore support (Amazon’s announcement), and Microsoft’s support page records the availability change (Microsoft Support).

Some existing installations may continue to work, but that is not the same as official support, security updates, compatibility updates, or a reliable way to reinstall WSA. Microsoft’s archived WSA repository is not a new official distribution channel (Microsoft’s WSA repository). Do not reset or uninstall a working legacy installation until you have backed up needed app data and confirmed a replacement.

- Open Start and search for Windows Subsystem for Android Settings. Review the resource setting and current subsystem status.
- If apps are unstable or repeatedly cold-starting, test Continuous resources. This keeps WSA active and may reduce startup delays, but consumes more system resources. Microsoft Q&A has suggested it as a troubleshooting measure, not a guaranteed performance fix (Microsoft Q&A).
- If WSA will not start, check that hardware virtualization is enabled in UEFI/BIOS and Virtual Machine Platform remains enabled in Windows Features. Reboot after changing virtualization settings; update graphics drivers if the problem appears graphics-related.
- Identify the scope: test whether the issue affects all apps or only one, and whether it concerns startup, graphics, networking, or Google-dependent functions. If connectivity fails, test without a VPN or unusual firewall/network settings.
- If an app installs but will not open, investigate missing Google Play Services, unsupported native libraries, DRM or anti-emulator restrictions, a damaged app package, or subsystem compatibility before changing system settings blindly.
- Before uninstalling WSA, export or back up any app data that matters. Do not assume the official package can be downloaded again.
Microsoft’s historical official requirements included Windows 11, a supported x64 or ARM64 processor, and Virtual Machine Platform; it recommended 16 GB of RAM and an SSD. These requirements describe the former supported setup, not a promise that WSA can still be installed on a new PC in 2026 (Microsoft Support).
Which alternative fits your needs now?

For developers who need repeatable API and debugging tests, Android Studio’s Emulator or a physical device is the more appropriate starting point. Genymotion can suit custom-device testing, subject to its current licensing terms. For gaming, evaluate a consumer-focused option such as BlueStacks against the particular game and your PC rather than relying on generic speed claims.
Privacy and unofficial builds
Microsoft’s WSA privacy documentation said crash, performance, and app-usage data could be collected, with controls available in WSA Settings (Microsoft’s WSA privacy page). For any Android environment, consider what app data, files, and account credentials it can access.
Community packages that modify WSA or add Google apps are not Microsoft-supported replacements. Their provenance, signatures, update policy, licensing, and security may differ. Avoid treating an APK’s successful installation as proof that it is safe or compatible, and use care before entering a Google account into an unofficial build.
