The Army tested a genetically engineered silk material for possible ballistic use; the available evidence does not show that it became a finished vest or was issued to soldiers. The story behind the “newest defense” headline dates to a 2016 research contract involving Dragon Silk, a recombinant fiber made by genetically modified silkworms. It was a real materials-testing effort, not a publicly documented replacement for Kevlar or other body armor.
What the Army contract actually covered
In July 2016, Kraig Biocraft Laboratories announced a U.S. Army contract to provide Dragon Silk fibers and ballistic “shoot packs” for performance testing. The fully funded base effort was valued at $99,962. The company said the work could be worth up to $1 million if an option phase was exercised. Those figures describe a research-and-development contract, not a purchase of finished armor.
The intended work was to evaluate material for potential protective-apparel applications. A sample of fiber, a woven test pack, a qualified armor design and an armor system adopted for service are different milestones. The public record cited here documents the first stages, not Army fielding.
How Dragon Silk was made
Dragon Silk was not harvested from spiders. Spiders are difficult to raise in large numbers because they are territorial and can be cannibalistic. Kraig’s approach used genetically modified silkworms carrying spider-silk-related genetic material. The silkworms produced recombinant fibers in their cocoons; the fiber could then be processed into thread and woven for evaluation. Kraig describes its technology on its spider-silk technology page.

- The modified silkworms are raised and produce cocoons containing recombinant silk.
- The fiber is harvested and processed into thread.
- Thread is woven into test material, such as ballistic shoot packs, for evaluation.
“Spider silk” is a useful shorthand, but it can blur the distinction between natural spider dragline silk and a fiber produced by engineered silkworms. Dragon Silk is Kraig’s product name for its material, not a generic name for every spider-silk protein or engineered silk.
Why researchers considered it for armor
Engineers are interested in spider-silk-inspired fibers because they may combine tensile strength, extensibility, toughness, flexibility and low density. A fiber that can stretch and absorb energy could be valuable in protective materials, and lower weight would matter to someone carrying armor for long periods.

But no single fiber property establishes whether a vest will stop a projectile. Ballistic performance depends on the full construction: fiber quality and consistency, yarn, weave, coatings or laminates, number and arrangement of layers, areal density, projectile type and impact speed. Evaluation also has to consider backface deformation (the blunt-force bulge behind armor), environmental aging and whether protection holds up across multiple impacts. Strength-to-weight claims, “stronger than steel” comparisons and elasticity figures do not substitute for testing a complete armor system.
Dragon Silk versus Kevlar: what the numbers do—and do not—say
Reports at the time repeated approximate figures of 2 gigapascals for Dragon Silk’s tensile strength and 3 gigapascals for Kevlar, alongside claimed elasticity of roughly 30–40% for Dragon Silk and about 3% for Kevlar. These are company- or media-reported fiber-level figures, not results from a controlled comparison of finished vests. To compare armor responsibly, readers need performance per unit weight, projectile and velocity, backface-deformation results, coverage, repeatability and the applicable test standard—not just tensile strength.
What happened: the 2016–2017 timeline
- July 12, 2016: Kraig announced the Army contract. The funded base award was $99,962, with a potential value of up to $1 million if options were awarded. The announced work called for ballistic shoot packs and material testing. Read the announcement.
- December 19, 2016: Kraig announced completion of an initial cocoon-production phase and said the material would be processed for ballistic shoot packs. See the production update.
- May 19, 2017: Kraig reported delivering Dragon Silk fiber samples and finished thread to the Army for independent testing. That announcement concerned samples and thread, not proof of an approved vest. Read the sample-delivery announcement.
- July 24, 2017: Kraig’s later SEC filing said an option extension increased the total award to $1,021,092 and added 12 months for research and delivery of recombinant fibers and threads. The larger figure was not the original funded base contract. See the company’s 2017 Form 10-K.
- End of 2017: The same filing said ballistic shoot packs were still being woven and had not yet been delivered to the government customer by year-end.
The May sample report and the year-end filing are not necessarily contradictory: fiber samples and finished ballistic shoot packs were separate deliverables. Neither statement, on its own, shows that a completed armor design passed qualification.

Did Dragon Silk stop bullets?
The evidence establishes a program to supply and evaluate material for ballistic use. It does not provide a publicly documented result showing a Dragon Silk vest defeating specified ammunition under a named Army or National Institute of Justice (NIJ) protocol. Without the projectile and construction, impact velocity, number of layers, armor weight, backface-deformation result and repeat testing, a claim that it was “bulletproof” would be misleading.

Even a successful material test would be one step toward a practical system. Military use would also depend on reliable production, processing and integration, durability in moisture, heat and sunlight, storage life, multi-hit performance, logistics and formal qualification.

What is known now
Kraig’s current materials describe continued recombinant-silk development, including its BAM-1 commercial line and newer Project Atlas research. The company presents these as commercialization and research milestones; they do not establish that the Army adopted Dragon Silk armor, issued it to soldiers or selected it to replace Kevlar. The distinction matters: commercial production of a silk line, or research into defense materials, is not the same as a military procurement decision. The contract and later milestones discussed above are documented primarily through the contractor’s announcements and SEC filing; no public evidence in the cited material establishes routine Army issue or field deployment.
