Not as a well-supported total. The Internet Computer is a blockchain network, not a company that raises venture capital. The organization behind it, the DFINITY Foundation, announced a $61 million Strategic round in February 2018 and later said its Presale raised 102 million Swiss francs. DFINITY’s current presentation summarizes its two 2018 private fundraisers as raising more than $110 million. The unqualified claim that “the Internet Computer blockchain raised $80 million” therefore does not match the clearest available figures.
What raised the money?
Three things are easy to conflate: the Internet Computer is the blockchain network and protocol; ICP is its native token; and the DFINITY Foundation is the Swiss nonprofit that developed the technology and supports its research, operations, and ecosystem. DFINITY describes itself as the builder of the Internet Computer (DFINITY support).
So, in precise language, DFINITY raised funds connected to developing the Internet Computer. The protocol itself did not conduct a conventional company financing round.

Contemporary coverage rendered the Presale as approximately $102 million. Forbes separately estimated that DFINITY had collected around $190 million in private funding in less than two years. That is a secondary cumulative estimate, not the same figure as DFINITY’s current summary of the two private 2018 rounds (TechCrunch; Forbes).

Why does the $80 million claim appear?
The supplied claim does not identify a source, date, currency, or whether it refers to one round or cumulative fundraising. The available announcements do not establish $80 million as DFINITY’s definitive total. It might be a partial-round figure, a historical currency conversion, or a database entry counting a particular event; without its original source, none of those explanations can be confirmed.
The Presale figures illustrate why labels matter: DFINITY announced a 90 million Swiss-franc cap in April 2018 and later reported a completed raise of 102 million Swiss francs. A target and a final amount are not interchangeable, and Swiss francs are not U.S. dollars. Contemporary dollar reporting is an approximate conversion, not a reason to silently relabel the original amount.

Who backed DFINITY?
Andreessen Horowitz and Polychain Capital led the $61 million Strategic round. Other investors named in contemporaneous coverage of DFINITY’s fundraising included SV Angel, Aspect Ventures, Village Global, Multicoin Capital, Scalar Capital, Amino Capital, and KR1. The named participants should not be treated as if they all invested in every round: investor lists vary by event, and the Strategic round, Presale, and associated ecosystem activity were distinct.

Not necessarily. DFINITY’s Presale announcement described a private fundraising round involving rights to receive a limited share of future genesis tokens. That differs from buying ordinary shares in a conventional company. Funding reports may include contributions in cryptocurrency, and dollar amounts can depend on the exchange rate used at the time. A reported fundraising valuation therefore should not automatically be read as unrestricted cash on a corporate balance sheet or as equity financing.

What was the funding for?
DFINITY said the money would support research and development, expand its cryptography and distributed-systems work, and help establish research centers and operations. Reuters reported that $21 million of the $61 million Strategic round was intended for research and development, with the remainder directed to DFINITY’s Ecosystem Venture Fund, according to founder Dominic Williams. That fund supported the wider ecosystem; it should not be collapsed into a claim about what the blockchain itself raised.
Developer grants are a separate category
DFINITY’s Developer Grants Program supports teams building applications, tools, infrastructure, integrations, and open Internet services. DFINITY describes the grants as non-dilutive and says the program is not intended to be a source of venture funding (grants program; program terms). Grants to ecosystem builders are not the same as money raised by DFINITY, so adding grant awards to private fundraising totals without explaining the difference produces a misleading number.

The most accurate way to state the figures
For a single, well-documented event, say: DFINITY announced a $61 million Strategic round in February 2018 and a Presale of 102 million Swiss francs completed in August 2018. For a brief cumulative description, DFINITY’s current presentation says its two private 2018 fundraisers raised more than $110 million. Avoid presenting “the Internet Computer blockchain raised $80 million” as an established total unless a specific source explains what that number counts.
