No—Samsung did not officially update the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge to Android 9 Pie or One UI. The S7’s final major Android upgrade was Android 8.0 Oreo with Samsung Experience 9.0. Newer Android or One UI-style software may be available through unofficial community ROMs, but those are not Samsung updates and can carry significant risks.

The Galaxy S7’s official Android update timeline

Samsung’s U.S. specification sheet lists Android 6.0 at the Galaxy S7’s launch. The phone later received Android 7.0 Nougat and then Android 8.0 Oreo. Samsung community support material identifies Oreo as the S7 series’ final major official Android version; the exact rollout and firmware depended on the model, carrier and region.

That describes major Android versions, not every maintenance release or security patch. A later patch does not mean the phone was upgraded to a later Android version.

Why Android Pie and One UI get associated with the S7

Android 9 Pie and Samsung’s One UI arrived in the same generation of Samsung software. One UI was Samsung’s interface for Android Pie-era phones, including upgrades for models such as the Galaxy S8, Note8, S9 and Note9. The S7 was not included in Samsung’s official One UI rollout. Historical rollout information is summarized in One UI device history.

Online posts can blur official upgrades and community modifications. A screenshot showing One UI-like screens, or a phone running Android 9 or newer, does not by itself prove Samsung released that software for the S7.

What the official Oreo update meant

Oreo brought Android platform features such as notification channels, picture-in-picture support, notification snoozing and background optimizations. Samsung Experience 9.0 also updated Samsung’s interface and apps, with features such as Bixby integration on applicable models. Availability and feature behavior were not identical on every carrier or chipset variant; see Samsung’s Oreo rollout discussion for Exynos models.

The Oreo rollout was temporarily paused in some cases after unexpected reboot reports, then resumed. That history is documented in a Samsung Community discussion and a Samsung Members rollout update. Firmware examples reported for Exynos models included G930FXXU2ERE8 for the S7 and G935FXXU2ERE8 for the S7 Edge; these are examples, not universal firmware packages. Samsung Members: rollout resumed.

How to check the software on your S7

  1. Open Settings, then About phone or About device.
  2. Record the Android version, Samsung Experience version, Build number and Model number.
  3. Return to Settings, open Software update, then select Download and install or Check for updates, whichever label appears.
  4. If no update is offered, do not treat a file or “update tool” found online as compatible. Samsung community guidance also mentions Smart Switch for checking supported updates; confirm current compatibility through Samsung’s support channels. Samsung Members update guidance.

Names can differ by Android version, region and carrier. The model number matters: the standard S7 is in the SM-G930 family and the S7 Edge in the SM-G935 family, with further differences among Exynos, Snapdragon and regional or carrier versions.

If your Galaxy S7 says it has One UI

Check the model and software details above, and consider whether the device has a custom recovery, root access, an unlocked bootloader or a “custom” status in Download Mode. A claimed One UI S7 could be a different Galaxy model, a reseller mislabel, a custom ROM, or confusion between Samsung Experience and One UI. Samsung Community discussions caution that unofficial newer One UI software is not Samsung-approved or tested for the S7. Samsung Community compatibility discussion.

Can you install Android Pie or One UI unofficially?

Possibly, depending on the exact S7 model and the community project. Some developers have made newer Android-based ports or One UI-style builds, but the available evidence does not establish a single safe, maintained ROM that works across all S7 variants. A community ROM is not Samsung firmware, and Samsung does not provide official support for it.

There is also a difference between an official firmware update and installing firmware manually. A Samsung firmware package flashed with a tool such as Odin can still be official firmware if it is legitimate and matches the exact model, but manual installation cannot turn the S7’s official Android ceiling into Pie. A custom ROM is third-party operating-system software and may require bootloader changes, a custom recovery and erasing the phone.

Risks to weigh before modifying the phone

  • Compatibility and boot failure: Flashing an image for an S7 Edge onto a standard S7, or using a package for the wrong chipset, region or carrier, can leave the phone unable to start.
  • Data loss: Installation may wipe the device. Back up photos, messages, authenticator codes and other important data first.
  • Missing or impaired features: Samsung Pay, Secure Folder, DRM, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, camera quality, biometrics or proprietary sensors may not work as expected.
  • App and security issues: Banking apps, Play Integrity checks and other apps may reject modified software. Update cadence and security maintenance depend on the ROM project.
  • Support consequences: A successful boot does not establish that every hardware or carrier function works, and Samsung does not support unofficial software.
  • Scams and misleading downloads: Avoid fake APKs and “update tools” advertised as a one-click Android Pie upgrade.

Because compatibility is model-specific and no universally suitable ROM is established here, there is no safe one-size-fits-all flashing recipe for the S7.

Is the Galaxy S7 still suitable for everyday use?

An S7 that is stable may remain adequate for basic tasks if you accept its older software. It should not be treated as equivalent to a currently supported phone. For banking, work authentication, health data or long-term use where current security support matters, replacing it with a device that still receives security updates is the more prudent option; a custom ROM does not guarantee that outcome.
