Netflix DGS is a Spring Boot GraphQL server framework, not a replacement for Spring Boot. It adds a schema-first, annotation-based programming model, testing tools, code generation, data loaders, subscriptions, and federation support on top of GraphQL Java. In current releases, DGS integrates internally with Spring for GraphQL, which provides much of the transport and execution infrastructure.
Choose DGS when its conventions, code generation, federation examples, or existing codebase matter. Choose native Spring for GraphQL when you want the most direct Spring programming model and do not need DGS-specific tooling. Whichever route you take, select a compatible release set rather than copying dependencies from an old tutorial.
What DGS is
DGS means Domain Graph Service. It is an open-source, Apache 2.0 GraphQL framework developed and maintained by Netflix and the wider community. DGS uses GraphQL Java as its execution engine and normally treats GraphQL SDL as the API contract. Resolver classes are registered as Spring components with annotations such as @DgsComponent and @DgsQuery.
A typical request flows through a transport supplied by Spring Boot and Spring for GraphQL, into GraphQL execution, then into DGS schema and resolver code, your service layer, and finally repositories or external services.

DGS is schema-first, but that does not mean a database model automatically becomes a public schema. You still design fields, nullability, authorization boundaries, pagination, and evolution rules. Optional code generation can derive Java or Kotlin types and query helpers from the schema.
DGS versus Spring for GraphQL
| Concern | Netflix DGS | Spring for GraphQL |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | Netflix-maintained convention-rich framework | Spring’s foundational GraphQL integration |
| Programming model | DGS annotations and conventions | Spring GraphQL controllers and annotations |
| Engine | GraphQL Java | GraphQL Java |
| Testing | DGS query executor and testing utilities | GraphQlTester, @GraphQlTest, and transport testers |
| Code generation | Prominent DGS tooling | Not its defining feature |
| Federation | Strong integration and examples | Uses suitable GraphQL Java and federation components |
| Primary risk | Version and model overlap during integration | Fewer DGS-specific conventions and tools |
Modern DGS uses Spring for GraphQL internally. Existing DGS applications can generally keep their DGS annotations and test patterns while gaining the Spring execution path. Do not casually mix DGS and Spring GraphQL resolver models: similarly named features can have different registration and configuration behavior. The DGS integration guide recommends staying consistently with the DGS model when using DGS.
Choose DGS when
- Your team prefers DGS annotations and conventions.
- You already operate DGS services.
- Schema-derived code generation, DGS query tests, or federation support is important.
- You want a convention-rich GraphQL layer for Spring Boot.
Choose native Spring for GraphQL when
- You want the most Spring-native abstraction.
- The service is small and DGS-specific tooling is unnecessary.
- Your organization standardizes directly on Spring projects.
- Minimizing framework-specific layers matters more than DGS conventions.
Versions and project setup
Compatibility is currently the part most likely to make an otherwise correct tutorial fail. The DGS repository compatibility table lists DGS 11+ with Spring Boot 4, DGS 10.x with Spring Boot 3, and DGS 5.x with Spring Boot 2 (no longer maintained). Meanwhile, the getting-started documentation describes a Spring Boot 3 and JDK 17 setup, and Maven Central exposes newer artifacts, including 12.0.1. These references describe different release lines, not one universal combination.
Verify the release-specific matrix in the DGS repository, the getting-started documentation, and the Spring for GraphQL reference before choosing versions. Do not pin a random GraphQL Java, Spring GraphQL, federation, or starter version from an old blog post.

Generate the project
- Open Spring Initializr.
- Select the Java and Spring Boot release required by your chosen DGS line.
- Add the Netflix DGS dependency.
- Add Spring Web for Spring MVC or Spring Reactive Web for WebFlux.
- Add DGS code generation only if the project needs generated types or query APIs.
- Generate, import, and inspect the build file for a DGS platform or BOM.
DGS documents Gradle as the preferred route for its code-generation plugin, although Maven is supported. Modern examples commonly use a platform and starter similar to:
implementation(platform("com.netflix.graphql.dgs:graphql-dgs-platform-dependencies:<dgs-version>"))
implementation("com.netflix.graphql.dgs:dgs-starter")
Use the coordinates generated for your release. Maven Central also contains newer artifacts such as graphql-dgs-spring-graphql-starter, so artifact names from older and newer generations are not interchangeable.

Define the schema
Spring Boot conventionally discovers .graphqls and .gqls files below src/main/resources/graphql/. DGS examples often use src/main/resources/schema/. The effective location depends on the starter and configuration; check Spring Boot’s schema-location rules and your DGS version.
type Query {
book(id: ID!): Book
books: [Book!]!
}
type Mutation {
addBook(input: AddBookInput!): Book!
}
type Book {
id: ID!
title: String!
author: String!
}
input AddBookInput {
title: String!
author: String!
}
Use input objects for mutations, make nullability deliberate, and avoid unbounded collection fields in production. A schema is a client-facing contract, not a mirror of persistence tables.
Implement queries and mutations
@DgsComponent
public class BookDataFetcher {
private final BookService bookService;
public BookDataFetcher(BookService bookService) {
this.bookService = bookService;
}
@DgsQuery
public Book book(@InputArgument String id) {
return bookService.findById(id);
}
@DgsQuery
public List<Book> books() {
return bookService.findAll();
}
}
The GraphQL field normally matches the method name, and @InputArgument binds an SDL argument. Copy annotation imports from the documentation for your selected release because package details have changed during the Spring GraphQL integration.
Keep authorization, validation, transactions, and repository access in the service layer. Resolver return types must match the schema’s list and nullability structure. For mutations, authorize before side effects, validate at the service boundary, make retryable operations idempotent where appropriate, and return a stable API payload rather than exposing persistence entities directly.
mutation {
addBook(input: { title: "Example", author: "Author" }) {
id
title
}
}
Run and call the API
After placing a valid schema on the runtime classpath, start the application:
./gradlew bootRun
# or
./mvnw spring-boot:run
Run a query such as:
query {
books {
id
title
author
}
}
DGS documentation describes GraphiQL and local query execution, but the exact UI route and endpoint can vary by release and configuration. Confirm the route exposed by the generated project instead of assuming a universal GraphiQL URL.

Transport and subscriptions
GraphQL is transport-agnostic. Spring Boot needs the GraphQL starter plus a transport starter: spring-boot-starter-web for MVC HTTP, spring-boot-starter-webflux for WebFlux, spring-boot-starter-websocket for WebSocket subscriptions, and spring-boot-starter-rsocket for RSocket scenarios.
With current Spring GraphQL integration, WebSocket subscriptions use Spring’s WebSocket support. A configuration can look like:
implementation("org.springframework.boot:spring-boot-starter-websocket")
spring:
graphql:
websocket:
path: /graphql
Protocol, client, endpoint, and version must agree. Older DGS-specific WebSocket auto-configuration should not be copied into a current project without checking the migration guidance. DGS also documents Server-Sent Events in applicable configurations.
Prevent N+1 database access with data loaders
If a query loads 100 books and each book independently loads its author, the server can issue one query for books plus 100 author queries. DGS data loaders batch related keys and cache results for the request.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Fetch the parent collection.
- Collect related IDs.
- Batch those IDs in one data-loader invocation.
- Map results back to the original keys.
- Return values asynchronously where that fits the data-access model.
A loader must preserve key-to-result correspondence and define what happens for missing records. Keep its cache request-scoped; cross-request caching can return stale or unauthorized data. Respect database parameter limits and batch sizes. Reactive transport does not make blocking JPA or JDBC calls non-blocking, so use reactive access or isolate blocking work deliberately.
Data loaders do not replace authorization or query-cost controls. Verify their effect with SQL logging and integration tests that assert query counts. See the DGS data-loader documentation.

Code generation: useful, not automatic API design
DGS code generation can produce Java or Kotlin types and query-related classes from SDL. It is valuable when the schema is a cross-team contract, many resolvers share generated types, or schema changes should fail the build.
- Generated source must be managed consistently and can create noisy diffs.
- Generated GraphQL types should not automatically become persistence entities.
- The build gains coupling to the selected code-generation version.
- Schema evolution can require coordinated source changes.
Follow the versioned code-generation guide; Gradle is the documented preferred workflow. The generated Java client is described in the DGS Java client documentation.

Resolver unit tests
Mock the service and test resolver behavior quickly. These tests do not prove SDL field names, argument binding, nullability, or serialization.
DGS query tests
Use DGS query-executor support to run GraphQL documents against the application schema without deploying a network endpoint. This catches schema and resolver wiring problems earlier.
Spring integration tests
Use Spring Boot test support, GraphQlTester, HTTP clients, WebSocket testers, or a random-port test to verify startup, selection sets, errors, authorization, data-loader behavior, serialization, and database integration. Test subscriptions with the same protocol and path used in production. See DGS testing and Spring GraphQL testing.
Errors, security, and operations
GraphQL commonly returns an HTTP response containing both data and errors. Define stable error codes, preserve field paths, and distinguish domain failures from infrastructure failures. Map validation and authorization exceptions to safe GraphQLError responses; log diagnostic details server-side without returning stack traces, SQL, or secrets. Decide explicitly whether partial data is acceptable.

Controls every production service should consider
- Authentication and field-level authorization.
- Depth and query-complexity limits.
- Request-size, timeout, rate, alias, and batching limits.
- Persisted or safelisted operations for trusted clients.
- Bounded pagination and maximum list arguments.
- Operation-name and field-level metrics, traces, and logs.
Introspection is enabled by default because GraphiQL and developer tools use it. You can disable it with:
spring.graphql.schema.introspection.enabled=false
Apply that policy by environment: disabling introspection can break development tooling, and it does not stop expensive or unauthorized operations by itself.
Federation
Federation is useful when independently owned services expose subgraphs that are composed behind a router or gateway. DGS supports federation, entity keys, and cross-service references, with examples in the DGS federation documentation and Netflix federation example.
A DGS service is a subgraph, not automatically a complete federated platform. Production federation also needs composition checks, routing, ownership rules, deployment coordination, observability, and schema governance. Typical composition failures involve conflicting keys, invalid ownership directives, incompatible field types, missing entity resolvers, and accidental breaking changes. Federation is usually unnecessary for one small service.
When GraphQL is the wrong choice
GraphQL can reduce client over-fetching when clients need different projections of related data, but it is not inherently faster. Poor resolvers create N+1 access, expensive nested queries, and difficult-to-cache responses. REST may be simpler when resources, HTTP status semantics, caching, and response shapes are stable, or when the team cannot yet operate query-cost controls and schema governance.
When a managed platform is worthwhile
DGS and Spring for GraphQL are open-source frameworks; hosting, monitoring, support, and governance remain your responsibility. A single service and team can usually start with DGS, CI checks, logs, metrics, and its existing deployment platform.
For many subgraphs and teams, Apollo GraphOS is an optional commercial control plane for schema checks, collaboration, federation operations, and graph observability. Its pricing page lists a free plan for up to three developers, a Developer plan starting at $5 per million requests billed monthly, custom Standard and Enterprise plans, and $50 in usage credit for new signups; confirm current terms at Apollo GraphOS pricing. Compare retention, SSO, audit logs, SLAs, data residency, and subscription metering rather than request price alone.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Build failure: remove manually pinned transitive GraphQL Java versions, import the DGS platform, inspect the dependency tree, and upgrade the compatible set together.
- Schema not found: check
.graphqls/.gqlsextensions, classpath location,spring.graphql.schema.locations, and multi-module packaging. - Resolver not called: verify Spring discovery, DGS annotations, field and argument names, schema selection, and duplicate resolvers.
- N+1: add data loaders, batch repository methods, SQL query-count tests, and bounded selection sets.
- WebFlux stalls: find blocking JPA/JDBC calls and isolate or replace them.
- Subscription failure: check the WebSocket starter, endpoint path, protocol, client compatibility, and migration from old DGS auto-configuration.
- Federation composition error: inspect keys, directives, entity resolvers, field types, and breaking changes in each subgraph.
The Bottom Line
DGS is a strong choice for Spring Boot teams that value its annotation model, testing utilities, code generation, data loaders, and federation support. Native Spring for GraphQL is the cleaner option when those DGS-specific capabilities are not needed. Start from Spring Initializr, verify the release matrix, keep resolver logic behind services, and treat query cost, authorization, testing, and operations as first-class API design work.
