Desktop PWA Sub Apps is an experimental Chromium feature intended to let one installed progressive web app create separate operating-system launch icons for parts of the same application. It is a prototype, not a stable, cross-browser PWA capability: enabling its flag alone will not add icons to an ordinary PWA.
What Desktop PWA Sub Apps are for
A large web application can contain several products or workspaces that people launch independently. A virtual desktop might offer a word processor, spreadsheet, browser, and terminal; an office suite might include mail, documents, and calendars. With a single generic app icon, users must open the app and find the right destination each time.
The proposed sub-app model would let a parent PWA request separately launchable identities for those destinations. Each could have its own name and icon and open a particular route or feature, while still belonging to the parent application. The proposal describes icons appearing in operating-system launchers and other app surfaces, but actual presentation would depend on the browser and operating system. See the Multi Apps explainer.
What the Chromium flag actually means
Chromium source includes a flag named Desktop PWA Sub Apps, described as enabling installed PWAs to create shortcuts by installing sub-apps. The source calls its implementation a prototype based on the Multi Apps proposal; the flag’s presence is not evidence of a finished browser feature. Chromium flag description

As of August 18, 2026, the available evidence supports calling this experimental Chromium functionality, not a stable, interoperable web-platform feature. It does not establish a stable Chrome release with the feature enabled by default, guaranteed support in Microsoft Edge, or support across browsers and operating systems. The flag can be absent, renamed, changed, or removed in a particular build.
Even where the flag is available, the PWA must implement the prototype mechanism and the browser must have the corresponding support. Turning on a flag does not convert every installed website into a multi-icon app.

How sub-apps differ from shortcuts and separate PWAs

The proposal explicitly does not aim to give supplemental icons independent scope, display modes, badging, browser-controlled launch behavior, or tray and notification icons. Only use this procedure in a test profile and in a Chromium build that exposes the flag. Experimental flags can change or interfere with existing web-app behavior.

- Open the Chromium-based browser you are testing.
- Enter
chrome://flagsin the address bar. - Search for Desktop PWA Sub Apps.
- If it appears, set it to Enabled, then select Relaunch.
- Use a test PWA that implements the prototype behavior; an ordinary PWA will not gain sub-apps just because the flag is on.
If the flag is missing, that build does not expose it. Do not assume a manually constructed flag URL will work. A development build may expose experiments unavailable in a stable, branded, or vendor-specific release, and its launcher behavior may differ by operating system.
The proposed developer model
The Multi Apps explainer favors giving each sub-app its own manifest URL. A parent app could request a sub-app by referencing that manifest. The following is conceptual proposal material, not a stable or broadly supported API recipe:

A manifest URL could reuse existing web-app manifest infrastructure and let a service add sub-apps dynamically, for example when an enterprise user receives a new entitlement. In exchange, developers would need to host and maintain additional manifests, while browser implementations would need reliable rules for identity, updates, duplicates, and removal.

Why installation needs user control
Adding an app icon changes the user’s operating-system launcher, so silent installation would create opportunities for spam and impersonation. A malicious or deceptive site could generate unwanted entries or use familiar names and icons. The explainer anticipates a browser permission prompt that identifies the requested sub-app; it also discusses possible enterprise policy controls. Those are proposal expectations, not a promise about the behavior of every current build.
The same-origin approach is intended to limit a parent app’s ability to install arbitrary third-party manifests. That can reduce spoofing and supply-chain risks, but it also constrains suites assembled from separately hosted products.
What remains uncertain
- Browser and platform support: The flag’s presence in Chromium source does not establish availability in a particular Chrome or Edge release, or consistent behavior on Windows, macOS, Linux, or ChromeOS.
- Installation lifecycle: The proposal does not establish cross-browser rules for whether sub-apps can be removed individually, whether removing the parent removes them, or what happens when an entitlement ends.
- Identity and updates: The explainer discusses manifest URL or start URL as possible identifiers, but does not provide a stable cross-browser contract for updates or duplicate entries.
- Data and permissions: Separate icons do not establish separate data stores, permissions, service workers, or security boundaries.
- API stability: The example API and manifest approach are proposal or prototype material; a site should not depend on them for a production experience.
Chromium source also contains a distinct experimental flag, Sub Apps for Isolated Web Apps, described for isolated web apps with their own manifests and operating-system integration. It is related work, not proof that the Desktop PWA Sub Apps prototype is stable or that the two mechanisms are interchangeable. Chromium flag description

- Use manifest shortcuts for a few lightweight actions that belong to the parent app and do not need persistent app icons.
- Use separate PWAs when products need independent origins, permissions, storage, update behavior, or uninstall choices.
- Use tabs or windows when destinations are temporary sessions or workspaces rather than app-level entry points.
- Consider native packaging when you need a shipped offline runtime, deeper system access, or mature deployment controls. Native wrappers bring platform-specific packaging and maintenance costs.
Microsoft Edge separately supports installing websites as apps, and Microsoft distinguishes those “sites as apps” from PWAs rather than presenting them as the same capability.
