Deploying iTunes to managed Windows devices is still possible through the Microsoft Configuration Manager (formerly SCCM) MSI application model, but the package must be validated for each release. The workflow is to extract the Apple installer, package the correct MSI, verify its product code and detection method, distribute the content, and pilot the deployment before making it required.
This updates the approach described in the HTMD Blog guide published on October 14, 2022. Its filenames, screenshots, product code, and Windows-version testing are specific to that time and should not be treated as current universal values.
Decide whether you need iTunes first
Do not deploy iTunes to every endpoint automatically. Confirm the business requirement and identify whether users need:

- Apple-device connectivity or management;
- Apple drivers or related components; or
- a current Apple-recommended Windows application instead.
The downloaded MSI, Microsoft Store version, and any newer Apple distribution method may have different update, detection, licensing, and device-management behavior. Keep iTunes limited to the device groups and users that require it.

What you need before packaging
- A supported Configuration Manager site, client, and distribution point.
- Administrative access to create applications and deploy them to collections.
- An approved Apple installer obtained from an authorized source.
- A small pilot device collection.
- Test devices representing clean installations, older iTunes installations, standard-user sessions, remote offices, and devices containing other Apple software.
- A versioned UNC source folder, such as
\SCCMSourceApplicationsAppleiTunes<version>.
Record the installer filename, download date, SHA-256 hash, reported version, architecture, product code, upgrade code if available, bundled components, reboot behavior, and any installed services or drivers.
Extract and inspect the installer
The HTMD procedure uses a self-extracting installer such as iTunes64Setup.exe and creates the application from the extracted iTunes64.msi. That remains a useful pattern only when the current Apple package actually contains that MSI.
- Download the approved installer to a clean working directory.
- Extract the executable using an approved archive or packaging tool.
- Locate the MSI intended for the target operating-system architecture.
- Inspect the MSI with an approved MSI-inspection tool.
- Confirm the product name, version, product code, upgrade code, custom actions, prerequisites, bundled Apple components, and restart requirements.
- Test installation and removal manually on a clean test device.
Do not copy only the MSI unless testing proves that it is self-contained. If the MSI references supporting files, include them in the content source. Keep the source directory clean: Microsoft warns that automatic MSI application creation imports files from the specified folder, so unrelated files can be distributed with the application. Create the MSI application in Configuration Manager
- Open the Configuration Manager console.
- Go to Software Library > Application Management > Applications.
- Select Create Application.
- Choose Automatically detect information about this application from installation files.
- Set the type to Windows Installer (*.msi file).
- Browse to the UNC location containing the validated MSI and its required files.
- Review the metadata imported by Configuration Manager.
- Correct the application name, publisher, version, administrator comments, icon, and Software Center description.
- Review the deployment type’s install and uninstall commands, requirements, user experience, return codes, and installation behavior.
- Complete the wizard.
Configuration Manager can import Windows Installer metadata automatically, but review everything before deployment. Successful MSI import does not prove that the package installs correctly, detects correctly, or provides working Apple-device functionality.

Install and uninstall commands
The HTMD article shows these package-specific commands:
msiexec /i "iTunes64.msi" /qmsiexec /x {E6FF3475-A35E-481F-8A8E-3D73CF3A30A1} /qThe GUID above belongs to the MSI used in that 2022 article. Do not reuse it blindly. A safer current-style example is:
msiexec.exe /i "iTunes64.msi" /qn /norestartmsiexec.exe /x {PRODUCT-CODE-FROM-CURRENT-MSI} /qn /norestartUse the switches required by your packaging standards and confirm the installer’s actual behavior. If ConfigMgr should control restarts, test /norestart and configure the relevant return codes and restart policy.

Validate detection
For a genuine MSI deployment type, Windows Installer product-code detection is usually the simplest option. Configuration Manager can import it automatically.

However, product codes can change between releases. The product code shown in the HTMD example—{E6FF3475-A35E-481F-8A8E-3D73CF3A30A1}—must be checked against the current MSI.
Use MSI detection when the package registers the product correctly and the product code represents the version you intend to manage. If it does not, use a carefully tested detection rule based on the installed version, a known executable file version, a registry value, or a package marker.
Detection should answer one question: Is the intended iTunes version installed and compliant? Avoid combining detection rules casually, because an overly broad rule can report an obsolete or incomplete installation as compliant.
Distribute the application content
- In the console, right-click the application and select Distribute Content.
- Select the application content.
- Add the required distribution point or distribution-point group.
- Complete the wizard.
- Open the application’s content status and wait for successful distribution.
Do this before deploying the application. A deployment can fail simply because the client cannot locate content on an available distribution point. If content distribution fails, verify the source path, permissions, package files, distribution-point health, and whether the latest content version reached the target distribution point.

Deploy to a pilot collection
- Create a small pilot device collection.
- Right-click the application and select Deploy.
- Select the pilot collection.
- Choose Action: Install.
- Choose Purpose: Available for user-initiated testing.
- Configure scheduling, notifications, and Software Center visibility.
- Complete the deployment and test from Software Center.
An Available deployment lets users choose the application in Software Center. A Required deployment installs it according to the schedule and deadline. Use Required only when the business dependency justifies managed installation, including its possible restart and compatibility impact.
Validate more than the Software Center result. Test launching iTunes as a standard user, existing libraries and profiles, device recognition, Apple-related services and drivers, security controls, uninstall, reinstall, and behavior when iTunes or Apple processes are already running.
Move from pilot to production
Promote the application only after the pilot confirms clean installation, upgrade behavior, detection, removal, and user experience. For a Required deployment, account for maintenance windows, restart handling, network capacity, and devices that may be offline.

Upgrade, downgrade, and rollback planning
For each new iTunes release:
- Create a new versioned source folder.
- Inspect and test the new MSI.
- Confirm whether it is a Windows Installer upgrade of the previous release.
- Check whether the old product must be removed first.
- Revalidate the new product code and detection method.
- Test preservation of user data and library locations.
- Use supersedence only after upgrade and uninstall behavior is proven.
- Define a rollback action, such as uninstalling the new deployment and restoring the previously validated version.
Replacing files inside an existing application does not automatically create safe version management. Avoid downgrade behavior unless it is intentional and tested.
Common problems and fixes

| Software Center remains stuck | Client policy, content, detection, or service issue | Trigger policy retrieval, confirm content availability, and review client application-enforcement logs. |
For verbose Windows Installer troubleshooting, use a package-specific log path:
msiexec.exe /i "iTunes64.msi" /qn /norestart /L*v "%WINDIR%TempiTunes-install.log"Also determine whether the existing installation came from an MSI, executable installer, or Microsoft Store. These channels may not upgrade or uninstall each other cleanly.

MSI application model
The MSI route fits organizations already using ConfigMgr because it provides imported Windows Installer metadata, standard commands, product-code detection, distribution points, collections, and Software Center integration. Its weaknesses are changing product codes, limited control over complex prerequisites, bundled components, and the possibility that a successful install does not prove device-management functionality.
Script or wrapper package
Use a wrapper when you must install prerequisites in order, remove conflicting Apple software, apply configuration files or transforms, control services, add detailed logging, or implement custom detection. This adds packaging and maintenance overhead.
Microsoft Store or modern package management
Store delivery is not equivalent to MSI deployment. Updates, licensing, user experience, and management ownership differ, and Store-delivered updates may not remain version-compliant through ConfigMgr. Review Microsoft’s guidance on Store applications in Configuration Manager. For cloud-managed Windows devices, also evaluate Intune and its official product information.
Smaller Windows-only teams may compare ConfigMgr with PDQ Deploy, while larger environments may consider a broader endpoint-management platform such as Ivanti Endpoint Management. Those alternatives make sense only when their wider capabilities justify introducing another platform.

- Confirmed that iTunes, rather than another Apple workflow, is actually required.
- Validated the current installer source, architecture, version, hash, and package contents.
- Extracted and inspected the MSI.
- Kept the versioned source folder free of unrelated files.
- Tested silent installation, uninstall, upgrades, reboots, and existing Apple software.
- Verified the current product code and detection method.
- Distributed content successfully to the required distribution points.
- Used an Available pilot deployment before considering Required deployment.
