Verdict: The Dell S3220DGF can still make sense as a discounted used or refurbished gaming monitor if you want a large curved screen, deep VA contrast, a 165Hz DisplayPort connection and a built-in USB hub. Its age matters, though: motion response is not among the best at 165Hz, viewing angles are limited, and HDR has little impact without local dimming. Buy it for the size and contrast—not because it is a modern HDR display—and only after checking the unit and comparing its price with newer alternatives.
This is a legacy-product review, not a fresh 2026 lab test. RTINGS tested a unit manufactured in August 2019, and individual units and revisions may differ. The monitor remains documented by Dell’s support page, but that does not establish current new-stock availability or a dependable current price.

The S3220DGF’s appeal is the combination of a large 1440p image and VA contrast. Its 31.5-inch curved panel gives games, films and multi-window work more physical space than a typical 27-inch monitor. The VA panel’s relatively deep blacks can look especially satisfying in a dim room, where dark scenes often appear less washed out than on many low-contrast IPS screens.

RTINGS found low input lag and considered the monitor impressive for gaming, while also identifying its high refresh rate and contrast as strengths. The 165Hz ceiling makes motion and desktop interaction feel much smoother than on 60Hz or 75Hz screens, provided the connected PC can deliver the frames. FreeSync can help reduce tearing as frame rates vary.
The four-port USB hub is a useful extra on a monitor of this age. It can keep peripherals close at hand, but the hub only works when the USB upstream cable is connected from the monitor to the computer; a video cable alone does not activate its downstream ports.
Image quality: large and contrasty, but not especially sharp
QHD resolution on a 31.5-inch panel is a trade-off. It provides a roomy gaming and desktop canvas, but has lower pixel density than 2560 × 1440 on a 27-inch display. Text and fine interface details therefore look less crisp at the same viewing distance. For games, spreadsheets and general office work it can be a practical balance; for a sharper text image, a 27-inch QHD screen is usually the better fit, while 32-inch 4K is sharper still.

Viewing angles are a more significant limitation. RTINGS reports that the picture can wash out when viewed from the side, a characteristic VA weakness that is easier to notice across a large screen. The monitor is best viewed from a centered seat, and is less suitable for shared viewing or work where several people need to judge the same image. Reflection handling is decent and brightness is adequate for moderately lit rooms, but direct light can still make viewing harder.
For general creative tasks such as arranging a video timeline or working across several windows, the screen size can help. This is not a strong choice for color-critical work: side-angle changes can affect perceived consistency, and the available evidence does not establish it as a professionally calibrated display.
Gaming: responsive controls, less-perfect motion
Input lag and pixel response time are different things. Low input lag means a control action is displayed quickly; pixel response time describes how quickly pixels change between shades. RTINGS found low input lag but slower response behavior than comparable 165Hz monitors. Dark VA transitions can leave black smearing or trailing in fast-moving scenes. That distinction matters: a game can feel responsive to the mouse while moving objects still show visible blur.

The result is a better fit for racing, driving, simulation, role-playing and cinematic games than for players who prioritize the cleanest motion in competitive shooters. The large curved image and deep contrast add immersion; they do not compensate for slower dark transitions if motion clarity is your top priority. Do not treat Dell’s advertised 4ms response figure as a guarantee for every pixel transition or overdrive setting.

RTINGS’ assessment is based on its tested unit, not every S3220DGF. Panel behavior can vary between units, and revision differences also complicate comparisons. It is sensible to inspect the actual display rather than assume all examples behave identically.
HDR: compatibility, not a reason to pay extra
The monitor accepts HDR content, and some games may look more colorful or brighter in HDR mode. But RTINGS notes that the S3220DGF has no local dimming and only decent HDR peak brightness. Without local dimming, it cannot independently brighten a highlight while keeping neighboring dark areas truly dark. The result is limited HDR impact compared with modern OLED or Mini-LED displays.
HDR support on a specification sheet should not be confused with high-impact HDR. Do not pay a premium for this monitor solely because a listing calls it an HDR display. If HDR is central to your purchase, look for newer screens with effective local dimming, Mini-LED or OLED technology, while weighing their own cost and trade-offs.

The stand provides height, tilt and swivel adjustments, but no portrait rotation. Its documented ranges are 150mm of height adjustment, –5° to +21° tilt and –30° to +30° swivel. A large curved screen also benefits from enough desk depth to sit at a comfortable distance. If you plan to use an arm, verify the mounting standard and hardware against the unit’s manual and check that the used seller includes any parts you need; do not assume accessories are present.

Port inventory and maximum refresh rates matter in practice: the Dell guide lists one DisplayPort 1.4 input and two HDMI 2.0 inputs. For QHD at the monitor’s full 165Hz, connect through DisplayPort. HDMI is limited to 144Hz at QHD according to the manual. The guide also lists the USB upstream connection, four USB 3.0 downstream ports (one with BC1.2 charging), audio line-out and headphone output.
For a Windows PC, connect DisplayPort, attach the USB upstream cable if you want the hub, then open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display and choose 165Hz. Check the GPU control panel as well to confirm 2560 × 1440 and the intended refresh rate. Enable FreeSync in the monitor’s on-screen display if needed and turn on the matching variable-refresh setting in the graphics driver. Windows and driver wording can vary by version.
If 165Hz is not available, check the connection first: confirm you are using DisplayPort rather than HDMI, the correct monitor input is selected, and the graphics driver is installed. Then check GPU output capability and whether a dock, adapter, KVM or receiver is limiting the signal. Test the desired refresh range for flicker, black screens or brightness changes. With HDMI devices, the monitor’s 144Hz ceiling is only one part of the equation; a console or other source may offer fewer modes, so do not assume every console revision supports a particular 1440p high-refresh combination.

RTINGS says its tested monitor was manufactured in August 2019 and notes that a June 2020 A03 revision behaved somewhat differently. In one observed configuration, A03 added a default 120Hz behavior and removed the 144Hz option. That is a reported revision difference, not a guarantee that every A03 unit will behave identically. The lab review is useful for understanding the model, but it is not a new 2026 test of the unit you may buy.

Ask a used seller for clear photos of the rear label, revision identifier (such as A02 or A03), service tag, ports and stand. Confirm the exact model is S3220DGF, not the similar-looking S3222DGM or another Dell 32-inch monitor. Check warranty status and ask for the original receipt where applicable. Dell’s support and documentation page can help verify model-specific information, but does not itself guarantee coverage or availability.
Used-monitor inspection checklist
- Display full-screen red, green, blue, white, black and gray images to look for dead or stuck pixels, bright spots, pressure marks, scratches, cracks and uneven backlight.
- Test 2560 × 1440 at 165Hz over DisplayPort. Test HDMI separately if you need it.
- Enable and disable FreeSync and check for flicker or signal loss.
- Connect the USB upstream cable, then test all four downstream ports; also test headphone and line-out connections if you need them.
- Check the on-screen display controls and the stand’s height, tilt and swivel movement.
- Confirm included power and video cables, USB upstream cable, stand and any mounting hardware you expect to use.
- Prefer a seller offering a return window; an old panel without a practical return option is a higher-risk purchase.
These are recommended checks for a prospective buyer, not tests claimed to have been performed for this review.
Who should buy it—and who should pass?
Consider it if you specifically want a large, curved 32-inch-class screen; value VA contrast; play immersive games; can use DisplayPort; and want the USB hub. A used or refurbished unit can be appealing if it passes inspection, the price is clearly below comparable current monitors, and the seller provides meaningful return or warranty protection.
Pass or choose something newer if you compete in fast shooters, need cleaner motion, often view the screen from the side, require portrait rotation, do color-critical work, or want serious HDR. Also pass if the seller is asking current high-refresh-monitor money or offers no way to check the panel. There is no universal dollar cutoff: used prices vary by region, condition, revision, accessories and warranty.
Alternatives to compare before buying
- Dell S3222DGM: A newer 32-inch QHD curved VA alternative. RTINGS’ comparison describes it as faster in response behavior and notes optional black-frame insertion, while the S3220DGF offers better ergonomics, HDR support and connectivity. Check current price and availability; Dell’s product page is here, and RTINGS has a direct comparison.
- Dell G2724D or another 27-inch QHD IPS monitor: A 27-inch QHD panel is sharper at the same distance and IPS viewing angles are generally better suited to shared viewing. It gives up the S3220DGF’s larger image and VA contrast. The Dell G2724D page lists a 27-inch QHD Fast IPS display, but prices and stock change.
- Current 32-inch QHD VA models: These preserve the large-screen format. Compare response behavior, USB connectivity, stand adjustments, variable refresh support, warranty and return terms—not just the advertised refresh rate.
- 32-inch 4K monitors: Better suited to text detail and fine image work, but high-refresh 4K gaming requires substantially more GPU performance than QHD gaming.
- OLED or Mini-LED: Worth considering for much stronger HDR and fast pixel response, but compare cost and model-specific trade-offs. OLED buyers should also account for burn-in considerations, and used premium displays are particularly dependent on warranty and condition.
Because this is an older model and market prices change by region, compare the actual asking price with current alternatives available where you live. A newer monitor at a similar price may bring a warranty and faster response; the S3220DGF’s case is strongest when its size, contrast and USB hub are worth more to you than those advantages.
