Snipping Tool is Windows 11’s built-in screenshot utility. Press Windows+Shift+S to open its image-snipping overlay, Windows+PrtSc to save a full-screen image directly to PicturesScreenshots, or Windows+Shift+R to record a selected area of the screen. The exact behavior of the Print Screen key depends on your keyboard settings.

This guide explains which shortcut to use for each result, where files are saved, how to annotate or extract text, how video capture differs from screenshots, and what to check when a shortcut does not work.

Which screenshot tool is built into Windows 11?

Snipping Tool is the default Windows 11 app for capturing screen images and short screen recordings. Microsoft documents four image modes—rectangular, freeform, window and full-screen—and a separate recording workflow. You can open the app from the Start menu, or use keyboard shortcuts for the common tasks. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide for the current interface.

What you want Shortcut or path Result
Select part of the screen for an image Windows+Shift+S An overlay lets you choose rectangular, freeform, window or full-screen snipping. The capture opens in the Snipping Tool workflow and is copied for pasting.
Save the entire screen immediately Windows+PrtSc Windows saves a full-screen image in PicturesScreenshots.
Select part of the screen for a video Windows+Shift+R Snipping Tool opens its recording selection; select an area, start recording and stop when finished.
Open the full editor Start menu > Snipping Tool Choose New for an image or Record for video, then select the capture region.

On some laptops and compact keyboards, the Print Screen function is combined with another key and may require Fn. Microsoft also documents Fn+Windows+Space as an option on devices without a PrtSc button. Keyboard hardware and manufacturer utilities can change the labels or behavior.

Take a selected-area screenshot

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S. The desktop dims and the snipping toolbar appears.
  2. Choose one of the four modes: rectangular, freeform, window or full screen.
  3. Drag around the content, click a window, or select the full-screen option. The capture is placed into the Snipping Tool workflow and the clipboard.
  4. Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to edit. Use the pen, highlighter, shapes or crop controls, then choose Save or Share.

Rectangular snip

Drag a rectangle around a precise area such as an error message, a chart or a single dialog. Holding the selection to the edges of a window can give you a cleaner result than capturing the whole desktop.

Freeform snip

Draw an irregular outline when a rectangular crop would include unrelated information. The resulting image follows the shape you draw.

Window snip

Choose a specific open window instead of manually dragging around it. This is useful for documenting an app while excluding the taskbar and neighboring windows.

Full-screen snip

Use the full-screen mode when you want the same editor, annotation and sharing workflow but need the entire display.

Save a full-screen image without opening the editor

Press Windows+PrtSc. Windows saves the image directly under PicturesScreenshots; open File Explorer and enter %USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots in the address bar to reach that folder quickly. This shortcut is different from Windows+Shift+S: it is designed for an immediately saved full-screen file rather than a selection overlay.

If nothing happens, check whether your keyboard requires Fn, whether a hardware utility has remapped the key, and whether the screenshot folder is being redirected by an organization. You can also use Snipping Tool’s editor and save manually.

Edit, copy and share a capture

After an image snip, Snipping Tool provides pen and highlighter tools, shapes, cropping, saving and sharing. The capture can also be pasted into Paint, an email, a document or a chat with Ctrl+V. If you need a different file location or format, use Save in the editor and choose the destination offered by the dialog.

Recognize or redact text

Snipping Tool’s Text actions can copy recognized text from an image and redact email addresses or phone numbers. Microsoft says this processing is performed locally on the device. Recognition quality depends on the image’s resolution, contrast and the clarity of the type.

Change automatic saving

Open Snipping Tool, select its settings menu, and review the automatic-save and screenshot-folder options. Defaults can change with app updates, so verify the displayed folder instead of assuming every Windows 11 installation uses the same setting.

Record a selected area as video

  1. Press Windows+Shift+R, or open Snipping Tool and choose Record > New.
  2. Drag over the region to record.
  3. Start the recording, reproduce the steps you want to show, and select Stop when finished.
  4. Review the result in Snipping Tool and save or share it.

Use recording when motion, a sequence of clicks or a transient error matters. Use an image snip when a single state is enough or when you need a small file for documentation.

Control what the Print Screen key does

On many Windows 11 systems, pressing PrtSc opens screen snipping. This is configurable rather than universal. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Turn that option off if you want to prevent PrtSc from launching the overlay. Microsoft lists this setting in its Print Screen shortcut guidance.

The setting does not change the separate Windows+Shift+S workflow. If your organization manages keyboard policies, the option may be unavailable or may revert after policy refresh.

Copilot+ PC-only Snipping Tool features

Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool guide identifies Perfect Screenshot and Color picker as features available only on a Windows 11 Copilot+ PC. Perfect Screenshot frames on-screen content to reduce manual cropping; Color picker copies a selected on-screen color value. Do not expect either control on a standard Windows 11 computer.

Where screenshots go and how to find them

  • Windows+PrtSc: normally saves to PicturesScreenshots.
  • Windows+Shift+S: places the image in the Snipping Tool workflow and clipboard; save it from the editor if you need a permanent file.
  • Snipping Tool settings: can change automatic-save behavior and the screenshot folder.
  • Cloud or managed folders: OneDrive policies, roaming profiles and enterprise redirection can make the displayed path differ from the local default.

To avoid losing a selection capture, open the Snipping Tool notification immediately, choose Save, and confirm the path shown by the Save dialog.

Common problems and fixes

Windows+Shift+S does nothing

  • Open Snipping Tool from Start and try New. If that works, a keyboard shortcut, accessibility utility or manufacturer hotkey service may be intercepting the keys.
  • Restart Snipping Tool from Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Snipping Tool > Advanced options, where available, then use Repair. Save any unsaved captures first.
  • On a managed computer, an administrator policy may restrict screen capture.

Windows+PrtSc does not create a file

  • Try the keyboard’s Fn modifier or use the on-screen Snipping Tool workflow.
  • Check PicturesScreenshots and any OneDrive or enterprise redirected Pictures folder.
  • Confirm that the disk is not full and that your account can write to the destination.

Only part of a window appears

Use window snip or full-screen snip, then crop. A selection made while a menu is open can dismiss that menu when the overlay takes focus; reopen the menu and capture it with the desired mode.

Text actions miss words

Capture at a larger scale, improve contrast, avoid motion blur and crop away unrelated controls. Text recognition is local and image quality limits the result.

Snipping Tool captures your Windows desktop. If what you need is a repeatable screenshot of a web page for documentation, testing or automation, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one GET request. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; each response identifies the page verdict and billing result in headers. Can I capture a scrolling web page with Snipping Tool?

The documented Snipping Tool modes capture the visible screen, a selected window or the full display; they do not provide a documented full-page web capture mode. For automated full-page web captures, use a service such as ScreenshotNeo with its full-page option.

Are Snipping Tool’s text actions sent to the cloud?

Microsoft says Text actions processing is performed locally on the device. Your organization’s other security or synchronization policies can still affect where you save or share the resulting image.
