dbdiagram.io is a browser-based database diagramming and schema-documentation tool built around “database diagrams as code.” You can describe tables, columns, indexes and relationships in DBML, import an SQL schema, and turn the result into a shareable entity-relationship diagram (ERD). It is particularly useful for developers, analysts and technical writers who want a readable schema that can also fit into a Git-based workflow.
It is not a database administration console, migration engine or complete enterprise data-modeling suite. Its main job is to make relational schemas easier to design, inspect, explain and share.
What is dbdiagram.io?
dbdiagram.io is a standalone web application from Holistics for creating entity-relationship diagrams. Instead of manually drawing every table and connector, you write a compact schema definition in DBML (Database Markup Language), and the service renders the visual diagram.
The distinction between the main concepts matters:
- ERD: The visual map of tables and relationships.
- DBML: The text-based description of the database model.
- SQL: Database-definition code that can be imported or generated.
- Documentation: The broader explanation of what the schema means and how it is used.
dbdiagram.io supports documentation workflows, but hosted database documentation through dbdocs.io is a separate product with separate pricing.

Who should use it?
dbdiagram.io is a strong fit for:
- Developers designing a relational schema before implementation.
- Backend engineers documenting an existing database.
- Data analysts who need to understand tables and joins.
- Consultants and technical writers preparing architecture documentation.
- Teams that prefer text files, code review and Git.
- Students and educators learning relational modeling.
It is a weaker fit for users who expect a purely drag-and-drop canvas, organizations requiring offline or air-gapped software, and database administrators looking for monitoring, permissions, query tuning or migration orchestration. It is also less suitable when formal enterprise modeling notation or extensive governance is the primary requirement.
How the DBML workflow works
The defining feature is that the schema text can act as the durable representation while the diagram is the rendered view. A small users-and-orders model might look like this:

- Open dbdiagram.io and start with DBML or import SQL.
- Edit tables, fields, constraints, indexes, notes and references.
- Inspect the automatically rendered ERD.
- Arrange tables and organize the visual layout.
- Export SQL or an image, or share and embed the diagram.
The DBML reference covers the language syntax. Because the model is text, teams can store .dbml files in Git and review structural changes as code rather than relying only on a proprietary canvas file.

dbdiagram.io can import SQL schemas and reverse-engineer the information represented by the input into tables, fields and relationships. The homepage also advertises imports from database schemas and SQL dump files.
“Import” does not necessarily mean “connect to and understand every detail of a live production database.” Results depend on the SQL dialect, the input file and the metadata available. Check imported diagrams for:

- Foreign keys that were omitted or are enforced only by application code.
- Vendor-specific types and extensions.
- Views, materialized views, triggers, procedures and generated columns.
- Schema namespaces and naming conventions.
- Comments, business definitions and descriptive metadata.
- Constraints or indexes that the parser does not represent exactly.
Database support evolves over time; the release notes show continuing additions, including Oracle SQL support. Verify current dialect coverage before depending on an import for a critical project.
SQL and visual exports
The current free plan lists SQL import and export, plus PDF, PNG and SVG export. These formats serve different purposes:

- SQL: A starting point for schema creation or review.
- SVG: Best when documentation needs a scalable diagram.
- PNG: Convenient for presentations and quick sharing.
- PDF: Useful for printable reviews and formal documents.
Generated SQL should be reviewed before production use. It may require changes for permissions, ownership, extensions, partitioning, database-specific indexes, identity or generated columns, deployment ordering and backward-compatible migration strategy. An exported DDL script is not automatically a safe migration plan.
Views and large schemas
Paid plans support multiple diagram views over one underlying model. You could create focused perspectives for customer-facing tables, billing, identity and access, analytics or an executive overview. Table groups, header colors, detail levels, sticky notes and focused views can also make a large schema easier to read.
There is an important limitation: views are an organization feature, not a security boundary. According to the diagram views documentation, sharing or embedding applies to the overall diagram rather than granting separate permissions to each view. Do not assume that sharing one focused view hides the others.
Sharing, embedding and privacy
dbdiagram.io supports shareable links, public diagrams, embeds for documentation systems such as wikis, Notion and Confluence, and paid features such as private or password-protected diagrams, invited viewers and editors, and real-time collaboration.

The free-tier privacy default deserves attention: diagrams created by free users are publicly accessible through their shareable link by default. A schema can expose table names, customer domains, authorization structures, internal systems and business processes. Do not put confidential or proprietary database details into a free diagram unless your organization has explicitly approved that exposure.
Paid collaboration limits depend on the plan and the role of each invited person. Current documentation describes unlimited viewers and up to four free editors per diagram for paid users, while workspace and paid-seat limits also apply. Check the current collaboration documentation and plan interface before budgeting for a team.
Developer workflow: Git, VS Code and CLI
A practical code-centric workflow is:
- Keep DBML files in a Git repository.
- Review schema changes as text during pull requests.
- Open the model in dbdiagram.io for visual inspection.
- Generate or export SQL when it is appropriate.
- Manage production migrations separately with the team’s migration system.
- Publish diagrams or documentation for stakeholders.
The documented VS Code extension supports local DBML editing and visualization. The CLI can synchronize local DBML files with diagrams and publish documentation to dbdocs.io. This makes dbdiagram.io more than a browser-only canvas for developer teams.
That does not mean it is completely offline. The VS Code documentation distinguishes local editing from cloud synchronization and notes that network connectivity is required for paid features accessed through dbdiagram.io. Git history and cloud version history are also different things: one belongs to your repository, while the other belongs to the service.
AI Assistant
The current pricing page lists an AI Assistant on Personal Pro, Team and Custom plans, with usage limits that vary by plan. It can help generate or edit diagrams, but it should be treated as an accelerator rather than an authoritative database designer.

Review AI-generated output for omitted constraints, ambiguous relationships, incorrect cardinality, unsuitable data types and dialect-specific SQL. Do not enter sensitive requirements without first checking your organization’s policy and the vendor’s current data-handling terms. AI quotas and behavior may change.

The two figures shown for Personal Pro and Team correspond to different billing presentations, such as monthly versus annual billing. Do not treat the lower figure as an unconditional monthly price.

- Production migration tooling and rollback planning.
- Database administration, monitoring and query performance analysis.
- Permission and ownership management.
- Data-governance catalogs or business glossaries.
- Testing for referential integrity and application behavior.
Likewise, a missing line in an imported ERD does not prove that two tables are unrelated. If a database relies on naming conventions or application-enforced relationships rather than declared foreign keys, the tool may not be able to infer the connection.
Alternatives by workflow
DrawSQL
DrawSQL is a visual-first alternative aimed at teams that want polished ERDs, real-time multiplayer collaboration and documentation features in its plans. Its current displayed pricing signals are $19/month for Starter, $59/month for Growth, $179/month for Large and custom Enterprise pricing. DrawSQL’s own comparison page positions it against dbdiagram.io, so those workflow claims should be understood as vendor-authored rather than independent testing.
ChartDB
ChartDB is worth investigating when self-hosting, database synchronization, interactive DBML editing or a more visual design interface matters. Its pricing page displays a free tier, Pro at $25/month and custom Team and enterprise options. Deployment and feature limits should be checked for the specific edition.
drawDB
drawDB is an open-source, browser-based alternative for users who prefer a more visual editing workflow and want to inspect or potentially run the project themselves. Do not assume current commercial plans or limits without checking its official project pages.
Lucidchart
Lucidchart may be the better choice for organizations already standardized on a general-purpose diagramming and collaboration platform. It is less specialized than DBML-centered tools and is not the natural choice for teams that want schema code in Git.
SQLDBM and desktop modeling tools
SQLDBM and dedicated desktop or enterprise modeling products may be better for formal logical and physical modeling, broader database-platform support, governance or offline operation. They typically involve more complexity than a quick developer-oriented ERD workflow.

Verdict
Choose dbdiagram.io when you want a fast, readable ERD from DBML or SQL and value a developer-friendly, version-controllable schema workflow. Its strongest advantages are speed, text-based modeling, SQL import/export, shareable diagrams and growing developer tooling through VS Code and the CLI.
Look elsewhere if offline or self-hosted operation is mandatory, if nontechnical users need a canvas-first editor, if you require formal enterprise modeling, or if the diagram must be a complete substitute for migrations and database operations. Most importantly, check privacy before using the free plan: a convenient public diagram is not appropriate for a sensitive schema.
