A datacenter IP is associated with hosting or cloud infrastructure; a residential IP is assigned by a consumer internet provider to a home connection. An IP’s network operator and ASN can help distinguish them, but neither label proves who is using the address or whether the activity is legitimate. The right proxy type, when a proxy is appropriate at all, depends on the authorized task and the target—not on a promise that one category will always work better.
What makes an IP address datacenter or residential?
The distinction is about the network an address belongs to, not the number itself. Datacenter addresses are associated with hosting or cloud providers and server infrastructure. Residential addresses are assigned by consumer internet service providers to home connections. AWS, Google Cloud, OVH, Hetzner and DigitalOcean are examples of hosting networks; Comcast and Verizon are examples of consumer ISPs. These examples illustrate common categories, not a rule that every address associated with a large platform fits a simple two-way classification.
A public IP address identifies a network endpoint as seen by other systems. It does not, by itself, identify a person, describe the device behind it, or reveal why a request was made. A household may share an externally visible address, and an organization can route traffic through a provider network rather than directly from a user’s home connection.
How to tell whether an IP is residential or datacenter
Check the network operator and ASN
An Autonomous System Number (ASN) identifies a network under a common routing policy. An IP-intelligence or ASN lookup can report the address’s network operator and provide a network-type classification. A hosting-type ASN supports a datacenter classification; a consumer-ISP ASN supports a residential or business-access-network classification. Abstract API’s IP classification guide, updated July 6, 2026, describes ASN lookup as a useful clue, but does not establish a general accuracy rate for this method.
#1 Best Overall
- Get the IP address from a log, connection record or other source you are authorized to inspect.
- Look up the address in an IP-intelligence service that reports the network operator and ASN or network type.
- Read the classification as evidence about the network, not proof about the user or device. Record which provider and field supplied the label if the result informs a security decision.
- Investigate conflicting or ambiguous results rather than forcing the address into one of two categories.
A lookup service can help with this check, but its label is not infallible. Abstract API describes ASN lookup and IP-intelligence capabilities; that is a vendor’s description of its own service, not independent validation of classification accuracy.
Account for edge cases
- ISP proxies: An address can be registered under a consumer ISP’s ASN while the proxy itself runs on datacenter infrastructure. The registry clue and the actual service architecture may therefore differ.
- CDNs and platform networks: Networks such as Akamai or Meta are not necessarily ordinary hosting infrastructure or a typical end-user access network. A binary residential/datacenter label may not capture what matters about them.
- Business connections: A consumer-ISP classification can point toward an access network, but does not necessarily establish that a connection belongs to a private home rather than a business.
Use qualified language such as “classified as a hosting network by this lookup” or “appears to be on a consumer ISP network.” Avoid presenting a database label as certainty about physical location, ownership or identity.
What the IP category can—and cannot—tell you
Network type is a signal, not a verdict. A datacenter address may carry legitimate traffic from a corporate VPN, a continuous-integration pipeline or a monitoring system. A residential address may carry traffic routed through a proxy service, or traffic from a compromised home device. Neither classification alone establishes intent, authorization or abuse.

If you are assessing fraud or abuse, combine IP-network information with other evidence relevant to the specific event and give legitimate users a path to review or challenge a decision. In his guide, Abstract API CEO Nicolas Rios puts the principle this way: “The right move is to score, not to hard-block on this signal alone.” That is advice from the guide’s author, not an independent standards rule.
Datacenter proxies vs. residential proxies
A proxy sends a request through an intermediary, so the destination sees the proxy’s exit address rather than the client’s own address. A datacenter proxy routes through server infrastructure. A residential proxy uses an address associated with a consumer ISP and, in the Proxyway comparison, routes through a pool of real users’ devices and connections. A provider’s exact routing, sourcing and rotation arrangements vary; check current product documentation instead of assuming every service works the same way.
| Factor | Datacenter proxy tendency | Residential proxy tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Network origin | Hosting or cloud server infrastructure | Consumer-ISP address routed through a user device or connection |
| Speed and stability | Generally faster and more predictable | Often slower and less predictable when endpoint connections change or disconnect |
| Geographic choice | The 2022 comparison describes fewer locations | The 2022 comparison describes broader choice and more precise targeting |
| Rotation | May be manual or automatic, depending on the product | Pool and backconnect services commonly support rotation |
| Typical cost model | The 2022 guide describes per-IP purchase as common and costs as generally lower | The 2022 guide describes traffic-based pricing as common and costs as generally higher |
| Decision factor | Consider when speed, cost or stable server infrastructure matters and the target permits the activity | Consider when an authorized task requires consumer-network views or broad location sampling |
This is a qualitative summary of Proxyway’s guide dated March 25, 2022—not a current price list, controlled performance benchmark or guarantee of results. Provider, reputation, location, rotation, concurrency, protocol, target behavior and terms can all change the outcome. Verify current features and prices directly with a provider before choosing.

Match the option to an authorized task
Proxyway’s examples include near-real-time data collection and less-protected sites for datacenter proxies, and location-sensitive monitoring, e-commerce price or trend monitoring, search monitoring and ad verification for residential proxies. These are reported examples, not permission to evade access controls. Before using either type, confirm you are authorized to make the requests, respect applicable law and the target’s terms, and check the provider’s sourcing and acceptable-use disclosures.

If stable server infrastructure and a lower-cost model suit a permitted task, a datacenter proxy may be the simpler fit. If the task requires observing how a service responds to consumer-network connections in different places, residential access may be relevant—but the extra geographic choice does not guarantee speed, stability or acceptance by a target. Compare the actual service’s locations, rotation and session controls, pricing model, sourcing transparency and terms rather than buying on category name alone.
What security research says about residential proxy traffic
A China-specific study, “An Extensive Study of Residential Proxies in China,” by Mingshuo Yang, Yunnan Yu, Xianghang Mi, Shujun Tang, Shanqing Guo, Yilin Li, Xiaofeng Zheng and Haixin Duan, was posted September 13, 2022. The authors report that 80.05% of the China-located residential proxy IPs in their dataset sourced at least one malicious traffic flow during 2021, with 52 million malicious flows in total. The scope matters: this is a finding about the study’s collected China-located proxy IP dataset and observation period. It is not the share of all residential IPs, all proxy traffic, or current worldwide activity.
The authors also report identifying 399 residential proxy services, compared with 38 collected in prior works. Those are counts from that study, not a census of active services. The paper discusses open-relay-related exposure and short observed lifetimes for many China residential proxy IPs; those observations should likewise be read in the context of its collection and methods. The study is a preprint and focuses on China, so it does not establish worldwide prevalence.
When a proxy is not the problem you are trying to solve
If your actual goal is to capture a webpage as an image or PDF—not to route ordinary browsing through a different network—proxy type is a separate decision. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media, rather than a residential or datacenter proxy. It is an alternative to try first for authorized screenshot workflows: one GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, and the service accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Each of those cleanup steps can be turned off. Clean shots alone are billed; bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome reported in response headers. Its MCP server provides tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor or another MCP client.

For a basic screenshot, make one GET request (replace the example target with a URL you are authorized to capture):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API’s parameters and response details. Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

- Define the decision: Separate identifying a likely network category from deciding whether to allow, challenge or investigate a request.
- Choose evidence proportionate to the risk: Treat an ASN or vendor label as one input, especially when the result could block a legitimate user.
- Validate edge cases: Review ISP proxies, CDNs, platform networks, corporate VPNs and business connections when a binary label would affect an important decision.
- Check authorization and terms: Confirm that your monitoring or collection task is allowed and that a proxy provider’s sourcing and acceptable-use terms fit it.
- Recheck changing data: Network ownership, IP-intelligence records and proxy pools can change. Keep the lookup source and time with consequential classification decisions.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The ASN says ISP, so this must be a person at home.”
That conclusion goes beyond the evidence. An ISP ASN supports an access-network classification but may also describe an ISP proxy address. Record the classification as a network clue and investigate the architecture or other evidence if the distinction matters.
Best Value
“Datacenter means bot” or “residential means safe.”
Both shortcuts confuse network origin with behavior. Legitimate VPN, CI and monitoring traffic can use datacenter networks; residential proxies and compromised devices can carry abusive traffic. Assess the request in context instead of treating the category as a verdict.

“Residential proxies are always faster to use for a target.”
The cited 2022 comparison describes residential proxies as often slower and less predictable, while describing datacenter proxies as generally faster and more stable. These are broad tendencies, not a benchmark or a promise about a particular provider, route or destination. Check current service details and whether the use is authorized.
“The China study gives a worldwide abuse rate.”
It does not. The 80.05% figure refers to China-located residential proxy IPs in that study’s dataset and its 2021 observation period. Do not apply it to all residential addresses or current global traffic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an IP address change from residential to datacenter?
An address can be reassigned or its network records can change over time. A classification describes the available network information for a particular point in time, not a permanent property of the number.
Does a residential IP prove the user’s physical location?
No. A network classification is not proof of a person’s identity or exact location. Treat geolocation and network-type labels as estimates supplied by the relevant lookup source.
