Telegram’s dark appearance and your iPhone’s Dark Mode are separate settings. If Telegram is still light, first set the iPhone to Dark and choose a built-in Night theme in Telegram. If the main app is dark but one chat, Mini App, webpage, or Home Screen icon looks wrong, the cause is likely specific to that part—not Telegram’s overall theme.

Turn on Dark Mode on the iPhone and in Telegram
First check iOS: open Settings → Display & Brightness and select Dark under Appearance. To use a schedule instead, select Automatic, then tap Options to review when the appearance changes. You can also open Control Center, touch and hold the brightness control, and tap Dark Mode. Apple’s Dark Mode instructions cover both routes.

Depending on the app version, you may see labels such as Night Blue, Chat Themes, or a custom-theme section instead. Start with a standard built-in theme—not a custom theme, accent color, or wallpaper—so you can tell whether the basic interface works.

Telegram provides appearance and theme options in its iOS app, including support for synchronizing appearance with the system. But system Dark Mode does not guarantee that every chat, Mini App, or webpage inside Telegram will look dark. See Telegram’s appearance and system-theme notes and theme documentation.
If Telegram does not switch automatically
Test manual switching before changing schedules. Set iPhone appearance to Dark, open Telegram, and select a built-in Night theme. Then set iPhone appearance to Light and reopen Telegram; switch back to Dark and check again. If manual changes work but the schedule does not, review Settings → Display & Brightness → Automatic → Options. The schedule may simply not have reached its changeover time, or a shortcut or automation may be changing appearance separately.

Telegram’s automatic or night-theme controls can move between Appearance and related theme menus across releases. Check the current options there if Telegram is not following the system setting. Once manual switching behaves as expected, test the schedule again.

On iPhones without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom and pause to open the app switcher, then swipe Telegram away. If the interface still does not redraw, restart the iPhone. Apple’s Dark Mode and Night Shift guidance also helps distinguish Dark Mode from Night Shift: Night Shift warms display colors; it does not make Telegram’s interface dark.

If only one chat looks light or has poor contrast
A chat can have its own colors or wallpaper while the rest of Telegram is dark. Open the affected chat, tap its header, and look in the chat options for a control such as Change Colors or Change Theme. Labels and placement vary. Choose a default or known dark theme, and temporarily remove the custom wallpaper to test. Telegram supports chat-specific themes and backgrounds; its chat-theme overview describes Day and Night variants.
Pay attention to what is actually bright. The native iPhone keyboard is separate from Telegram’s message input field and inline bot keyboards. A bright area may be the wallpaper behind the composer, a bot’s keyboard, or an individual control rather than the whole app. If a built-in Night theme fixes it, the custom theme, wallpaper, or component colors were likely responsible.

If a bot, Mini App, or webpage looks wrong
Check Telegram’s main Settings and chat list first. If those are dark but one Mini App is not, leave it and test another. Mini Apps can receive theme colors from Telegram, but the Mini App must handle those colors correctly; see Telegram’s Mini App theme parameters. A problem limited to one Mini App may be in that Mini App rather than Telegram’s global appearance.

For a link opened inside Telegram, use the browser’s Open in Safari option and compare the same page. If it looks right in Safari but wrong in Telegram, the embedded browser or the website’s dark-mode handling may be the cause. Telegram has documented and later marked fixed an iOS embedded-browser color issue, illustrating why an in-app webpage problem does not necessarily mean the main app’s theme has failed: Telegram bug report.

Telegram’s public tracker also records a Mini App dark-color issue marked fixed in a later release. That is evidence that component-specific defects can happen—not proof that your current app has the same bug. Update Telegram, then report the specific Mini App if it remains reproducible. The Telegram icon’s appearance is separate from the app’s in-app theme. Check iPhone appearance and Home Screen icon customization, then restart the iPhone. If needed, remove and re-add the Telegram icon to the Home Screen. A Telegram report describes an icon that did not return to its expected appearance after the phone switched back to Light Mode; restarting resolved that case, which was attributed to cached iOS information. It is a useful step, not a guaranteed fix: Telegram icon appearance report.
If text or buttons are unreadable in Night Mode
Dark Mode and good contrast are different things. A custom theme, wallpaper, or individual control can still produce pale text, white buttons, or other hard-to-read combinations. Switch to a built-in Night theme and remove custom wallpaper temporarily before changing accessibility settings.
Telegram’s tracker has records of particular iOS appearance defects—for example, unreadable elements with a Night theme and a bot keyboard with poor contrast alongside a custom wallpaper. Those reports were marked fixed in later app versions, so they do not establish that a current release is affected. If the issue remains with a built-in theme, update Telegram and include the affected screen and steps when reporting it. Update before trying disruptive fixes
- Force-quit Telegram and reopen it. This is a low-risk way to refresh the interface.
- Restart the iPhone. Try this especially if the app or icon did not refresh after an appearance change.
- Update Telegram and iOS. Check the App Store for Telegram updates and Settings → General → Software Update for iOS updates. Appearance bugs can be version-specific; don’t assume an old bug report describes the current release.
- Retest with a clean theme setup. Choose a built-in Night theme, remove custom wallpaper, and reset the affected chat’s theme if necessary.
- Reinstall only as a last resort. Before logging out or deleting the app, verify you can access your account and understand what may be lost. Telegram warns that logging out on iOS can destroy Secret Chats; consult its FAQ before proceeding.
When reporting a persistent problem, note your iPhone model, iOS version, Telegram version, whether the issue affects the whole app or just one component, and the steps that reproduce it. Telegram’s tracker includes iOS appearance issues fixed in later releases, such as an Auto-Night Mode issue and a chat-overlay issue; report history is useful context, not a diagnosis by itself.
