A deleted video appears to show Matthew Wallace accelerating a Tesla Cybertruck to 83 mph on a road marked 35 mph. Wallace reportedly said police contacts had cordoned off the area for the test. Las Vegas police, however, said they were unaware of any such road closure and that the video alone was not enough to issue a speeding citation.
What happened
The incident was reported in June 2024. According to Futurism’s account, Wallace posted the video on June 2 before deleting it after criticism. Other users preserved or reposted copies.
The driver was identified in coverage as Matthew Wallace, described as an Air Force captain. The available reporting does not establish his exact unit, job history, or current military status.
What the video appeared to show
The clip showed a Cybertruck making a U-turn and then accelerating rapidly. Wallace wrote that the vehicle could make the turn “using only my pinky.” The vehicle display reportedly reached 83 mph, while a visible road sign showed a 35-mph speed limit.

That is 48 mph over the posted limit—roughly “50 mph over,” as some headlines described it. The phrase does not mean the truck traveled 50 miles over the limit.
The video reportedly showed no obvious traffic or pedestrians in the visible portion. But it does not prove that the road was legally closed, that officers were present, or that the display’s speed was independently verified by calibrated radar, lidar, GPS, or telemetry. A vehicle display can also differ from an official speed measurement.
What Wallace claimed about the police
After criticism, Wallace reportedly said he had contacted “cop buddies,” told them he was conducting a road test, and that officers had “cordoned off” the area.

That is the key claim behind headlines saying police “let him go.” The available reporting does not describe officers stopping Wallace and deciding not to ticket him. Rather, the claim was that police had supposedly secured the road before the driving test.
What Las Vegas police said
When contacted by KLAS/8 News Now, Las Vegas police reportedly said they were unaware of a road closure matching Wallace’s description. The local-news account is available at 8 News Now.
Police also reportedly said the video alone was insufficient to issue Wallace a speeding citation. That does not establish that no officer could have known about the activity informally, but it does mean the department did not confirm the claimed closure when asked.

Was Wallace proven to be lying?
The evidence supports a contradiction, not a formally proven finding about Wallace’s intent:
- Wallace claimed police contacts had arranged or secured the road.
- The video appeared to show a Cybertruck accelerating to a displayed 83 mph beside a 35-mph sign.
- Las Vegas police reportedly said they were unaware of such a closure.
That contradiction reasonably led critics to accuse Wallace of lying. But police unawareness, by itself, does not prove that he knowingly fabricated the story. The more precise conclusion is that his account was disputed and not supported by the police department contacted by reporters.
Did he receive a ticket or face criminal charges?
The cited coverage does not confirm that Wallace was issued a speeding ticket, arrested, or charged with reckless driving. It also does not establish charges related to impersonating police or improperly invoking police authority.

Police saying that the video alone was insufficient for a citation is not the same as a finding that the driving was lawful. It means the available evidence did not meet the department’s reported threshold for issuing a ticket.

Futurism reported that Wallace’s command was aware of the video and suggested that the incident could create problems for him. That is not confirmation of a formal investigation or punishment.

What about the Air Force Academy honor code?
The Air Force Academy’s official handbook states: “We will not lie, steal, or cheat, nor tolerate among us anyone who does.” The handbook explains that this code applies to the Academy’s Cadet Wing and its cadets.
That distinction matters. Wallace was described as an Air Force captain, not as an Air Force Academy cadet. The handbook provides institutional context, but it does not prove that the cadet honor code governed Wallace or that he faced discipline under it.
What remains unknown
The available reports do not establish:
- the exact road and jurisdiction where the video was recorded;
- whether an official closure, permit, escort, or traffic-control record existed;
- whether the road was public, private, restricted, or part of a test facility;
- whether the displayed 83 mph was independently corroborated;
- whether Wallace later withdrew or explained his police-authorization claim; or
- whether any formal police or military investigation followed.
Bottom line
The video and reported police response support the conclusion that Wallace drove—or appeared to drive—the Cybertruck far above the posted speed limit. They also undermine his claim that police had officially secured the road. But the available reporting does not prove that he knowingly lied, and it does not confirm that he was later cited, charged, or punished by the Air Force.
