A cURL converter translates a curl command into request code for a language or HTTP client, such as Python Requests or JavaScript Fetch. It can save typing when an API example is available only as a terminal command, but generated code is a draft: compare its method, URL, headers, body, authentication, and relevant curl options with the original before using it.
What a cURL converter does
curl’s official manual describes curl as a command-line tool for transferring data using URLs. A converter reads a command’s curl syntax and attempts to express the request using another client’s syntax. The result is not a universal equivalent: available targets and supported options vary by converter, and curl has many options that affect how a transfer works.

For example, a command might specify an HTTP method, a URL, headers, credentials, and a request body. A converter may map those components to a Fetch call, a Python Requests call, or code for another supported client. It may not preserve every shell-quoting detail or curl behavior, so you still need to review the result and test it.
How to convert a cURL command
- Choose a converter and target. Select the programming language and HTTP client your project actually uses. Check the tool’s stated support for flags in your command; a target-language listing does not guarantee that every curl option is handled.
- Remove secrets before pasting. Replace live tokens, passwords, cookies, private URLs, and sensitive body data with safe test values unless you have verified that the tool’s processing and retention terms meet your needs.
- Paste the complete command. Include the initial
curland all options that affect the request. Keep shell quoting intact when copying from a terminal or documentation. - Generate the code. Select the target client and inspect the output before copying it into your project. If the command includes file uploads, repeated data options, unusual quoting, or transfer settings, check those especially carefully.
- Run a safe test. Use a development environment and test credentials where possible. Compare the request’s behavior and response with the original curl command.
There is no single converter interface or label sequence that applies to all services. Feature descriptions on converter pages are publisher claims; they are not independent tests of accuracy or security.

What to verify in generated code
Compare the generated request with the original command component by component. curl’s manual documents a broad set of options, and the official documentation notes that data passed with --data is sent as provided rather than converted or improved. That makes preserving the exact payload and its encoding important.
- Method and URL: Confirm the HTTP method and the exact URL, including path and query parameters. Check that the converter did not drop or alter URL-encoded characters.
- Headers and cookies: Compare every header’s name and value, including repeated headers,
Content-Type, authorization headers, and cookies. Make sure values have not been duplicated or joined incorrectly. - Body and encoding: Check whether the command sends form fields, raw data, URL-encoded content, JSON, bytes, or multipart data. Verify repeated data flags, special characters, and the final body representation.
- Authentication: Verify how credentials are represented and whether the target client needs a different authentication mechanism. Do not leave a real secret hard-coded in source code.
- Files and multipart forms: Confirm file paths, field names, file names, and content types. A body that looks similar in code may not produce the same multipart request.
- Transfer behavior: Review any redirects, timeouts, proxy settings, compression, certificate validation, or other curl-specific options that matter to your use case. Do not assume they were translated just because the main request appears in the output.
- Shell behavior: The command is interpreted by a shell before curl receives its arguments. If it uses variables, command substitution, escaping, or complex quotes, verify that the converter’s interpretation matches the values curl actually received.
Keep the original command beside the generated code during review. For a command with a complex body or many options, test both against a non-production endpoint and compare the server-visible request if you can.
How to choose a converter
The reviewed tools advertise different targets and approaches, but the available descriptions do not establish a defensible accuracy ranking. Choose based on the command and project rather than a broad claim that one converter handles every case.
Rank #2
| What to compare | Questions to ask | Evidence boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Target language and client | Does it generate the library your project uses? Advertised examples include JavaScript Fetch, Axios, Python Requests, PHP, and Go. | These are vendor or package listings, not independent compatibility tests. |
| Option coverage | Does it support the exact data, auth, redirect, upload, form, and shell-syntax details in your command? | Coverage differs. One service describes support for everyday flags rather than every option. |
| Input processing and privacy | Does parsing happen locally, or is command text sent to a server? What do the service’s terms say about logging and retention? | Some pages claim browser-local processing; those claims were not independently audited. |
| Output visibility | Can you inspect parsed request parts and edit the result before using it? | A tool’s own feature description is not independent proof that parsing is complete. |
| Local workflow | Would a command-line tool or package fit better than a web page for repeated conversions? | The curlconverter npm listing describes command-line and library distribution options; package versions can change. |
Examples of advertised options can be found on Utilities Center’s converter, Merlin Tools’ converter, and the curlconverter npm package listing. Treat their feature and privacy statements as claims from those publishers, not verified comparisons. The cited material does not establish perfect equivalence or benchmarked accuracy for any converter.
Protect credentials and sensitive request data
A copied curl command can contain more than a URL. It may include bearer tokens, cookies, basic-auth credentials, private endpoints, or customer data in its body. curl’s manual also warns that verbose output can contain usernames, credentials, or other secret data. Avoid sharing command output as well as the command itself.
- Replace credentials and cookies with placeholders before using a web converter.
- Use fabricated or sanitized payloads if the request body contains private data.
- Check the converter publisher’s privacy and data-handling information; a statement that processing happens in the browser is a publisher claim, not an independent audit.
- Store any required real credentials in your application’s secret-management mechanism or environment configuration, not in shared examples or committed source.
- If you cannot confirm that sending a command to a service is acceptable, use a local workflow or translate the request manually.
Common conversion problems and fixes
The converted request returns a different status or response
Compare method, URL, query string, headers, authentication, and body first. Then inspect redirects, timeouts, proxy settings, and TLS certificate behavior. A converter may omit an option that curl used; add the equivalent setting in the target client if it is required.
Rank #3
The server says the body is malformed
Check the body’s exact bytes or text, content type, and encoding. Pay special attention to quotes, ampersands, plus signs, line breaks, repeated data flags, and whether the original used form data or raw data. curl does not rewrite data supplied with --data, so a conversion that changes it can change the request.
Authentication fails
Verify whether the original command used an authorization header, a cookie, or curl’s authentication options. Confirm the generated client sends the same credential in the expected place, and replace expired or redacted test values only in a secure development setup.

A file upload does not work
Check the input file path, multipart field name, filename, and content type. Confirm that the generated code uses the target client’s multipart upload mechanism rather than sending a plain text body that merely contains a path.
Rank #4
Quoting, variables, or shell syntax change the meaning
Converters may not reproduce the shell’s expansion rules. Expand variables safely to inspect the actual argument values, then translate those values into the target language without copying shell escaping literally. Never print expanded credentials into logs or shared output.
The converter does not offer the needed option or client
Use its output only for the parts it represents, then implement the missing behavior in the target client using that client’s documentation. For an uncommon flag or complicated command, manual translation with a test against the original request is safer than assuming a partial conversion is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a cURL converter guarantee identical behavior?
No. It generates code based on its parser and supported options. Compare the output with the original command and test it before relying on it.
Can I convert a cURL command with secrets in it?
Redact secrets before submitting it to an online service unless you have confirmed that the service’s data handling is acceptable for your use.

What if my command uses a curl option the converter does not support?
Translate that behavior manually in the target client and test the resulting request against the original.
