Ctrl+Shift+T reopens the most recently closed browser tab in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on Windows and Linux. Press it again to work back through recently closed tabs. On a Mac, use Command (⌘)+Shift+T instead. It’s a browser shortcut, not a general Windows or Linux command.
How to use Ctrl+Shift+T
Bring the browser window into focus, then press the keys together:
- Windows, Linux, or Chromebook: Ctrl + Shift + T
- Mac: Command (⌘) + Shift + T

Restore more than one closed tab
Press the shortcut repeatedly to restore earlier closed tabs. In Chrome, restored tabs follow their closure order, so repeated presses move back through the recently closed list. Stop when the tab you want appears; further presses may reopen other tabs or, depending on the browser, windows.

Can Ctrl+Shift+T restore a closed browser window?
Sometimes. Chrome’s tab-management help covers reopening a recently closed tab or window, and Firefox labels its command as reopening the last closed tab or window. Microsoft’s Edge shortcut list specifically describes reopening the last closed tab, so don’t assume its window behavior is identical. If the shortcut doesn’t work
- Check focus and the key combination. Click the browser window, then try Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+T on macOS.
- Use History for older pages. The shortcut is for recently closed items, not every page you have ever visited. Open the browser’s History menu or page and look for the site there. Edge recommends History when a tab was closed too long ago to retrieve easily with the shortcut: How to reopen closed tabs in Edge.
- Consider a shortcut conflict. A keyboard remapper, accessibility utility, desktop environment, remote-desktop app, or another program may intercept the keys. If the shortcut works elsewhere but not in the browser, check those tools and the browser’s shortcut settings where available.
- If the browser crashed or restarted, look for session recovery. Reopen the browser and check for a restore prompt or its History. Recovery after a crash or restart depends on the browser and its settings; Ctrl+Shift+T is not a guaranteed backup of an entire session.
- For private browsing, temper expectations. Private-window history and recovery can differ from ordinary browsing. If the tab is not restored, check only the recovery options available within that private session.
