A crypto screenshot is a dated view of what an app or website displayed; it is useful context, but it is not a complete substitute for transaction records. Capture the relevant wallet or exchange screen without exposing secrets, then download the platform’s original CSV, PDF or tax report and preserve on-chain references. Your country’s rules determine what must be retained and how activity is taxed.
What a crypto snapshot can—and cannot—show
A snapshot can document a visible balance, a completed withdrawal, an order status, or the account context around an event. Include the platform or wallet name, asset, quantity, status and any visible date or time that is safe to disclose. Treat the image as supporting context rather than proof of ownership, cost basis or tax treatment.
The reviewed U.S., U.K. and Canadian guidance does not define a special formal record type called a “crypto snapshot,” and none says a screenshot alone is sufficient. A screenshot can be edited, may omit earlier activity and usually does not show the data needed to calculate gain or loss.
Choose the record you actually need

Evaluate every record on four axes: coverage of all wallets, exchanges, periods and event types; detail such as time, units, event type, fiat value and basis; provenance and ability to connect it to your account; and durability—whether you can download, open and preserve it later.

How to take a safe crypto wallet or exchange screenshot
1. Define the purpose
Decide whether you need a balance at a moment, a completed transaction, or an account screen explaining where a downloaded record came from. The purpose determines which screen and supporting files to save.
2. Prepare a private, readable view
- Sign in through the official app or bookmarked domain and verify the account or wallet selected.
- Close unrelated tabs and notifications. Use a clean browser window at a readable zoom.
- Hide or crop email addresses, internal account IDs and unrelated holdings when sharing the image.
- Never show a seed phrase, private key, one-time authentication code, password, API secret or recovery QR code. If a secret appears, discard the image and capture it again.
3. Capture on your device
On Windows, press Win+Shift+S for a region or use Win+PrtScn for the full display. On macOS, press Shift+Command+4 for a region or Shift+Command+5 for window and screen options. On iPhone with Face ID, press the side and volume-up buttons together; on Android, press power and volume-down together (the exact shortcut can vary by manufacturer). Use the wallet’s own export or transaction-detail function when it provides one; a screenshot should not replace that original record.
4. Include useful context
Keep the asset and quantity, transaction type (buy, sell, swap, deposit, withdrawal or transfer), status, selected account or wallet label, and visible date/time context. Do not enlarge or annotate the only original. Save an untouched file first, then make a separate redacted copy for sharing.
5. Name and preserve the original
Use a neutral filename such as 2026-09-29_exchange-btc-withdrawal.png. Keep the original file, the capture date, the platform and the purpose in a simple index. Store a second copy in a separate location. An image’s file timestamp is not a reliable substitute for the date shown in the application, so record both when available.

United States: IRS record fields
IRS digital-asset guidance says records should document purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges and other dispositions, plus fair market value. For gain or loss calculations, it identifies the asset type, transaction date and time, units, fair market value in U.S. dollars and basis. IRS FAQs also describe records for identifying a specific unit: acquisition and disposition dates and times, basis, fair market value and proceeds or value received.
United Kingdom: HMRC record fields
HM Revenue & Customs’ Cryptoassets Manual (updated 28 November 2025) says: “The onus is therefore on the individual to keep their own records for each cryptoasset transaction.” Its list includes asset type, transaction date, whether bought or sold, units, sterling value, cumulative units held, bank statements and wallet addresses. HMRC recognizes exchange or wallet downloads and a blockchain transaction link plus acknowledgement that you control the relevant public key.
Canada: exports and retention
The Canada Revenue Agency advises regular exports from custodial platforms in case access is lost or a platform stops operating in Canada. Its published guidance says records should be kept for at least six years from the end of the last taxation year to which the records and books of account relate. Confirm the current CRA page and period for your circumstances before relying on that timeframe.
Keep the source files, not only a spreadsheet
- Original CSV, PDF or tax-report download, with the export date and covered period.
- Receipts, bank statements, trade confirmations and valuation notes used to determine fiat value.
- Transaction IDs, public addresses and links for on-chain events.
- A reconciliation note connecting transfers between your own wallets or accounts.
- Redacted screenshots as context, while retaining an unmodified original privately.
Download exchange and wallet history
Use the provider’s export first
Look for labels such as Reports, Statements, Tax, Transaction history or Export CSV. Select the broadest available date range, then repeat for each account, sub-wallet, currency and product. Save the provider’s original file before sorting or changing columns.
Provider coverage is not universal
Crypto.com Exchange’s help article dated 2 March 2026 says its CSV exports cover wallet transaction history, wallet deposits and withdrawals, order history and trade history; it identifies 1 November 2022 as the start date for specified history categories. That is a product-specific statement, not a promise about every exchange.

Coinbase says Coinbase Taxes offers gain-loss summaries and raw transaction history with custom reports, but its Coinbase.com tax activity excludes Coinbase Wallet and Coinbase Pro transactions. Check for discontinued products, separate custodial accounts, staking services and external wallets before assuming one report is complete.
Reconcile transfers
Match a withdrawal in one record to a deposit in the receiving wallet using amount, asset, time and transaction ID. Under the conditions described in IRS guidance, a transfer between wallets or accounts belonging to the same owner is not taxable; do not generalize that treatment to every jurisdiction or every movement. IRS guidance also notes that paying transaction service fees in digital assets can be a disposition.
On-chain evidence without exposing secrets
Save the transaction identifier and relevant public address or explorer reference. Then document how that address relates to the wallet or account you control, for example with a wallet account label, provider export or signed-message record where appropriate. A public address is not a private key, but it can reveal your holdings and transaction history, so share it deliberately. Never include a recovery phrase, private key or authentication code in an image or archive.

The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Wait for the page to finish loading, scroll to trigger lazy content, or capture after a known selector appears. For an automated request, use a selector wait, delay or network-idle wait; check whether the site requires a consent interaction or blocks automated browsers.
The export misses transactions
Repeat the download for another date range, account or product. Check whether the provider has a separate wallet, pro account or discontinued service. Compare the earliest and latest rows with bank statements and on-chain activity.

A transfer looks like a sale
Match both sides by transaction ID, asset, amount and time, then document common ownership where relevant. Do not assume the tax result without applying the rule for your jurisdiction.

You exposed a secret
Delete shared copies, rotate the exposed credential immediately and move funds if a recovery phrase or private key was revealed. Re-capture with sensitive fields hidden.
An automated capture fails
Check the HTTP status and ScreenshotNeo response headers, confirm the URL is reachable without a login loop, and reduce blocking rules that remove required resources. A bot check, timeout, failed load or blank page should be treated as an unsuccessful capture rather than as evidence of the page’s contents.
FAQ
Is a wallet screenshot proof of my balance?
It records what the interface displayed at capture time. It does not independently prove control of the wallet, that the balance was spendable, or that the image has not been altered.
How often should I export history?
Export after material activity and on a regular schedule, especially before changing providers. The CRA specifically advises regular exports from custodial platforms because access or local availability can be lost.
Do I need screenshots if I have CSV files?
Not always. A screenshot can preserve visual account context, while the CSV or statement is normally more useful for sorting, reconciliation and calculations. Keep it when it clarifies which account or interface produced the export.
