Verdict: The Crucial T705 remains a seriously fast PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD, especially for sustained transfers, scratch-disk work and high-end creator systems. It is not, however, a universal gaming upgrade or a safe current claim for “the fastest SSD” in 2026. Buy the 2TB version when it is competitively priced and your PC has a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot with strong cooling. For most gamers, a high-end PCIe 4.0 drive remains the more rational purchase.

What is the Crucial T705?

The Crucial T705 is a PCIe 5.0 x4 NVMe SSD in the standard M.2 2280 format. It uses a Phison PS5026-E26 controller, Micron 232-layer TLC NAND and onboard DRAM; PCWorld reports approximately 1GB of DDR4 cache per 1TB of capacity. Crucial sells it in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities, with bare-drive and heatsink-equipped versions.

Crucial rates the highest-capacity models for sequential speeds of up to 14,500 MB/s read and 12,700 MB/s write—nearly twice the sequential throughput of many PCIe 4.0 SSDs. Those are maximum vendor figures under controlled conditions, not guaranteed results in every system or workload. The drive carries a five-year limited warranty.

Performance: where the T705 is genuinely fast

The T705’s strongest argument is large sequential data movement. In HotHardware’s testing, it led its comparison group in sequential transfers and delivered highly competitive random 4K performance and latency. That makes it well suited to copying large video files, moving game installations, loading substantial project assets and handling scratch or cache workloads.

HotHardware’s launch-era review described the T705 as the best all-around consumer SSD it had tested, while Tom’s Hardware called it the fastest drive available at that time. Those conclusions were valid in their original testing context. They should not be converted into an absolute 2026 claim: newer PCIe 5.0 products, including the WD Black SN8100 and Samsung 9100 Pro, now compete for the top position.

The important distinction is between benchmark throughput and everyday responsiveness. A 14,500 MB/s sequential-read result does not make every application twice as fast as it would be on a good PCIe 4.0 SSD. Operating-system activity, small-file access, CPU work, decompression and application behavior can all dominate the result.

The 1TB model is not the best way to experience the T705

Capacity affects more than storage space. Lower-capacity SSDs can have fewer NAND packages and less parallelism. PC Gamer noted that its 1TB sample was constrained by a single NAND package, while the 2TB-and-larger versions are better candidates for the headline sequential figures.

  • 1TB: Suitable when entry cost matters and the workload is relatively light, but it is not the strongest expression of the platform’s performance.
  • 2TB: The best all-around choice for most enthusiasts. It offers better parallelism, useful space for games and projects, and is the capacity most closely associated with the major launch reviews.
  • 4TB: Appropriate for large game libraries, media datasets and single-drive workstations, but its premium can make a high-capacity PCIe 4.0 SSD the better value.

Gaming: impressive technology, modest upgrade for many players

The T705 can help storage-bound game workloads, particularly where Microsoft DirectStorage and GPU decompression are meaningfully used. Crucial claims game loading up to 15% faster than Gen4 SSDs under its stated test conditions. That is a vendor claim, not a universal result for every game.

Most game loading is affected by CPU processing, asset layout, memory, decompression and engine behavior. Moving from a hard drive or older SATA SSD to NVMe is usually far more noticeable than moving from a strong PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive to the T705. If your current SSD is already a good Gen4 model, the money may produce a better gaming experience when spent on a faster GPU, more memory or greater capacity.

Content creation and workstation workloads

The T705 is easier to justify when storage throughput is repeatedly exposed. It can make sense for:

  • High-bitrate video transfers and large media projects.
  • Scratch disks, application caches and large exports that repeatedly read or write substantial files.
  • Virtual machines and large software or data builds.
  • Large photo catalogs and local datasets.
  • Workflows that move files large enough to exceed the practical limits of mainstream Gen4 drives.

It is less compelling when the workload is mainly timeline playback, application launching or occasional exports dominated by the CPU and GPU. Storage speed cannot compensate for insufficient system memory or processing power.

PCIe 5.0 compatibility is essential

To reach its advertised performance, install the T705 in a motherboard M.2 slot that supports PCIe 5.0 x4. Crucial identifies Intel Core 13th- and 14th-generation platforms and AMD Ryzen 7000-series systems among its intended platforms, while also describing backward compatibility with PCIe 3.0 and 4.0 systems.

Crucial T705 PCIe Gen5 NVMe 1TB SSD, Up to 13,600MB/s, TLC NAND, Intel & Ryzen Compatible, for Hardcore Gaming & High-Speed Storage, Solid State Drive, Includes 1Mo Adobe CC – CT1000T705SSD3
  • PCIe 5.0 Performance: Delivers up to 13,600MB/s read and 10,200MB/s write speeds for quicker game load times, bootups, and smooth multitasking
  • Spacious 1TB Capacity: Store AAA titles, 8K+ video, and creative assets with blazing-fast Gen5 NVMe throughput
  • Platform-Optimized Compatibility: Designed for Intel 13th/14th Gen and AMD Ryzen 7000 in M.2 Gen5 slots

In a PCIe 4.0 slot, the drive will operate at the slower link generation. It will not deliver Gen5 speeds. Also check the motherboard manual: not every M.2 slot is connected to the CPU, supports PCIe 5.0, or remains fully available when other expansion slots are populated. Some boards share lanes with graphics slots or other devices.

A Gen5 SSD is a poor fit for many laptops and compact systems unless the platform provides adequate cooling and physical clearance.

Cooling is part of the purchase decision

PCIe 5.0 performance produces substantial heat. The bare T705 should be installed beneath a capable motherboard heatsink or a suitable aftermarket M.2 cooler. The heatsinked version is more convenient, but it still depends on case airflow and proper thermal-pad contact.

PC Gamer measured an 84°C peak on a 1TB sample even with its integrated heatsink. That is one test result from one sample and workload, not a universal temperature, but it illustrates why the T705 should not be treated like a low-power Gen4 drive. HotHardware likewise identified cooling as a principal requirement.

Installation checklist

  1. Confirm that the selected M.2 slot supports PCIe 5.0 x4.
  2. Check the motherboard manual for lane sharing and heatsink clearance.
  3. Update motherboard firmware if the board maker recommends it.
  4. Remove protective film from the thermal pad before installation.
  5. Make sure the pad contacts the controller and NAND area correctly.
  6. Keep the SSD away from direct graphics-card heat where possible.
  7. Maintain front-to-back case airflow.
  8. Monitor temperature during a sustained transfer, not only a short benchmark.

The integrated heatsink does not guarantee cool operation in every enclosure. Ambient temperature, airflow, motherboard layout, firmware and workload duration all matter. Repeated performance drops during long writes or benchmarks are signs to improve heatsinking or relocate the drive.

Price and value

The T705 launched at approximately $240 for 1TB, $400 for 2TB and $690 for 4TB in bare-drive configurations, with heatsink versions costing more. HotHardware reported an MSRP around $399 for the non-heatsinked 2TB model and $439 for the heatsinked version. These are historical launch prices, not current guaranteed retail prices.

In a deal listing dated August 16, 2026, PC Gamer showed approximately $253.44 for 1TB and $399 for 2TB. Retail pricing changes by country, retailer, stock status and heatsink configuration, so check the current price before buying. At roughly that 2TB price, the T705 can still be attractive for a Gen5 workstation. At a substantial premium over a newer or faster competitor, its value becomes much harder to defend.

How it compares with alternatives

Newer PCIe 5.0 SSDs

Current buying coverage identifies the WD Black SN8100 as a leading PCIe 5.0 gaming option and lists the Samsung 9100 Pro as another high-speed alternative. PC Gamer’s listing gives the Samsung drive maximum figures of up to 14,700 MB/s read and 13,300 MB/s write. Those numbers suggest that the T705 is no longer automatically the fastest option, although a same-date, same-platform test is needed for a definitive ranking.

A newer Gen5 drive may offer a better combination of performance, efficiency, firmware maturity and price. Conversely, a discounted T705 remains sensible when its sequential performance suits the workload and the system is already prepared for its cooling demands.

Lower-cost PCIe 5.0 drives

The Crucial P510 occupies a lower-priced Gen5 tier with lower advertised throughput. It is worth considering when the goal is simply to gain PCIe 5.0 compatibility without paying for flagship performance. It is not the obvious choice for sustained professional workloads where maximum throughput is central.

High-end PCIe 4.0 SSDs

The Crucial T500, Samsung 990 Pro, WD Black SN850X and Lexar NM790 remain compelling alternatives. They generally offer easier cooling, broader compatibility and better capacity-per-dollar. Tom’s Hardware specifically characterized strong Gen4 drives as more compelling for many buyers, particularly when peak sequential speed is not the primary requirement.

Who should buy the Crucial T705?

Buy it when:

  • Your motherboard has a properly cooled PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot.
  • You regularly move large files or run storage-intensive creator and workstation workloads.
  • You want an enthusiast-class SSD and accept a premium for peak throughput.
  • The 2TB model is competitively priced against newer Gen5 alternatives.
  • Your case has enough airflow and the SSD will not be trapped beneath a hot GPU without adequate cooling.

Choose something else when:

  • Your main use is ordinary gaming, office work or application launching.
  • Your system has no PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot.
  • You are building a laptop or compact PC with limited M.2 cooling.
  • You need maximum storage capacity per dollar.
  • The budget would deliver more value through a better GPU, more RAM or a larger Gen4 SSD.

Final verdict

The Crucial T705 was a performance leader when it launched in March 2024, and it remains an extremely capable Gen5 SSD. Its real strengths are sustained sequential transfers, large project files and enthusiast systems designed to exploit PCIe 5.0 bandwidth. The 2TB heatsinked model is the safest general recommendation if its current price is competitive.

It is not the automatic choice for gamers, nor should “fastest SSD” be treated as a current universal fact in 2026. For a typical gaming PC, a quality PCIe 4.0 SSD—or a newer, better-priced PCIe 5.0 model—will usually provide the stronger overall value. The T705 earns its premium when your workload can actually use the speed and your platform can cool it properly.
