CrowdStrike announced an agreement to acquire application security posture management (ASPM) company Bionic on September 19, 2023, then reported that it had acquired 100% of Bionic on September 28, 2023. The deal was intended to extend CrowdStrike’s cloud protection from infrastructure into the applications and services running on it.
What happened, and when?
| Date | Event | What was disclosed |
|---|---|---|
| September 19, 2023 | CrowdStrike announcement at Fal.Con 2023 | CrowdStrike said it had agreed to acquire Bionic, with predominantly cash consideration and a portion in stock subject to vesting conditions. It expected closing in its fiscal third quarter, subject to customary conditions. |
| September 28, 2023 | Acquisition completed | CrowdStrike’s later SEC filing said it acquired 100% of Bionic’s equity. |
| Fiscal 2025 filing | Accounting disclosure | The filing reported $239.0 million in cash net of cash acquired and $0.7 million in replacement equity awards attributable to pre-acquisition service. |
The completion date, rather than the 2023 announcement wording, is the appropriate status today: this was a completed acquisition, not a pending transaction.
Why CrowdStrike wanted Bionic
CrowdStrike’s stated objective was to make its cloud-native application protection platform cover the full path from cloud infrastructure to the applications and services deployed on it. Its existing cloud security strategy included cloud workload protection (CWP), cloud security posture management (CSPM) and cloud infrastructure entitlement management (CIEM). Bionic was intended to add ASPM to that set.
George Kurtz, CrowdStrike’s co-founder and chief executive officer, described the goal as “modern protection to address cloud security risk comprehensively, through one unified platform.” That is a strategic rationale from CrowdStrike, not an independently measured performance result.

What Bionic was described as adding
CrowdStrike’s announcement characterized Bionic as an agentless way to discover and map application environments across cloud providers, hybrid environments and on-premises deployments. The company said the mapping could include:
- Application services and databases
- Microservices and third-party dependencies
- APIs and data flows
- Relationships between deployed components
The release also described application-vulnerability prioritization and scanning for serverless infrastructure, including Azure Functions and AWS Lambda. These are vendor-described capabilities; the announcement did not provide independent testing or comparative outcome data.
Bionic chief executive Idan Ninyo called the approach a “‘Google Maps for your Apps,’ delivering a complete picture of application security risk in a truly frictionless way that does not interfere with the development process.”

Traditional code-repository scanning can identify issues in source or dependencies without showing how a deployed application is assembled, exposed or connected to sensitive data. ASPM focuses on that operational context: which services are actually running, how they depend on one another, and which weaknesses matter most in production.

Bionic security researcher Jacob Garrison told CRN that security teams were “struggling to understand where the vulnerabilities — which they’re seeing in their security testing tools — actually exist.” He said Bionic’s aim was to understand the full application and present its architecture in a way that reveals that context.
For a security team evaluating this type of platform, the relevant questions are whether it can:
- Map deployed production services rather than only repositories
- Show dependencies and data flows across cloud and on-premises systems
- Prioritize vulnerabilities by exposure and business impact
- Cover serverless workloads as well as conventional services
- Work without agents or unrestricted access to sensitive source code
How the deal fit CrowdStrike’s cloud strategy
CrowdStrike said it planned to offer Bionic ASPM as a standalone product while also integrating its capabilities into Falcon Cloud Security. The announcement presented that as a 2023 product plan; it did not establish current packaging, pricing or availability. Current commercial details should therefore be confirmed directly with CrowdStrike rather than inferred from the acquisition announcement.

In the same announcement, CrowdStrike said modules deployed in the public cloud had reached $296 million in ending annual recurring revenue as of July 31, 2023, up 70 percent year over year. That figure referred to CrowdStrike’s cloud-module business, not to Bionic revenue or the value of the acquisition.

How much did CrowdStrike pay?
There are two figures commonly associated with the transaction, but they describe different things:
| Figure | Source and meaning |
|---|---|
| $239.0 million cash, net of cash acquired | CrowdStrike’s SEC filing; acquisition-accounting consideration after accounting for $25.7 million of cash acquired. |
| $0.7 million replacement equity awards | The same SEC filing; awards attributable to pre-acquisition service. |
| $350 million | CRN’s 2023 report, citing multiple reports. CRN said transaction terms were not disclosed, so this was a contemporary expected price, not confirmed deal consideration. |
The SEC-reported amounts are the clearest disclosed accounting figures. They should not be merged with CRN’s $350 million estimate.
What the acquisition does—and does not—prove
The transaction shows CrowdStrike’s intention to connect infrastructure security with application-level visibility. It does not, by itself, prove that the combined products prevent a particular class of breach, reduce remediation time, or outperform competing ASPM tools. The cited announcement supplied no independent efficacy study or comparative benchmark.
It also does not establish the product’s status as of September 27, 2026. The available announcement and filing establish the acquisition and its strategic rationale, but not present-day Falcon Cloud Security packaging, pricing, feature availability or licensing requirements.
