Creative did release Sound Blaster drivers specifically for Windows NT 4.0, but the historical headline does not describe one universal package for every card. Creative maintained separate NT 4.0 drivers for the SB16/SB32 and AWE32/AWE64 families, PCI128, PCI512 and Sound Blaster Live!. The surviving download indexes document several revisions, while the exact date and package behind the original announcement remain unconfirmed.
What the release actually represented
Windows NT 4.0 users needed vendor-specific audio drivers because NT was not simply Windows 95 or Windows 98 with a different name. Its protected driver architecture and hardware-access rules meant that a 9x Sound Blaster driver could not be assumed to work under NT. Microsoft’s archived AWE32 guidance explicitly says that NT 4.0 did not include every driver required by the card and directs users to obtain Creative’s files separately (Microsoft KB 156605 archive).
Creative’s surviving support catalog shows a series of model-specific NT4 packages rather than a single all-purpose download. That distinction matters when reconstructing the period announcement: a listing for a later revision is evidence that a package existed, not proof that it was the exact file mentioned in the original news item.

Creative’s model index also contains AudioPCI and OEM variants. Dell, Gateway, Compaq, IBM and Packard Bell boards can have different subsystem identifiers or bundled software, so a retail package may install only partially or omit card-specific features (Creative model and OEM index).

What the drivers enabled
“Supported” was a spectrum, not a yes-or-no condition. Depending on the board and package, an NT4 driver could provide wave playback and recording, MIDI playback, Sound Blaster compatibility, device recognition and mixer or control-panel access. A card producing sound did not necessarily have every feature working.
AWE cards
For AWE32-class hardware, Microsoft says a separate Creative Sound Blaster AWE32 MIDI Synth driver was needed for the card’s full orchestration capabilities. Installing the basic audio device alone could therefore leave wavetable or MIDI functionality unavailable.
Live! features
The later Live! package is a distinct product-family update. Creative’s archive describes updated Surround Mixer 1.0 and AudioHQ components, an optional 1,024-voice software MIDI synthesizer, and an automatic EAX 1.0-to-EAX 2.0 update. Those details should not be generalized to SB16, AWE or PCI128 packages (Creative’s archived Sound Blaster index).
How installation worked on NT 4.0
Exact dialogs varied by card, package and service-pack state, but the period workflow was generally:

- Identify the precise model, CT number where available, interface (ISA or PCI), and Plug and Play status.
- Obtain the matching NT4-specific package rather than a Windows 95/98 installer.
- Use NT4’s audio-device installation process or Device Manager and choose Unlisted Or Updated Driver when the supplied files were not in the built-in list.
- Install separate MIDI-synthesizer, mixer, AudioHQ or control-panel components if the package provides them.
- Restart when requested, then test wave playback, recording, MIDI and any advertised EAX functions.
Creative’s Sound Blaster Live! documentation specifically describes the “Unlisted Or Updated Driver” route (Live! manual PDF). Do not assume the same menu sequence or INF file applies to every card.
Troubleshooting period systems
No device is detected
Recheck the model and package, then inspect ISA resource assignments. IRQ, DMA and I/O conflicts were common, as were incorrect Plug and Play settings. Non-Plug and Play AWE32 cards require a different configuration path from Plug and Play boards.
The card is detected but there is no sound
Confirm that the mixer is not muted, the correct playback device is selected and the wave driver loaded. A successful device entry does not prove that the mixer or recording component installed.

Wave audio works but MIDI does not
Install the separate AWE32 MIDI Synth component where applicable and verify the MIDI output device. Full AWE orchestration required more than the base wave driver.

EAX causes a crash or blue screen
Use the package intended for the exact PCI512 or Live! model. The documented blue-screen correction belongs to the PCI512 v4.06.711 listing; it is not a universal NT4 fix.
An OEM card will not accept the retail installer
Locate the vendor-specific package or identify the board’s subsystem ID. OEM software often contains altered INF files and utilities.

Creative’s current pages preserve useful metadata, but products such as the AWE32 are marked End of Service Life. A support entry may remain visible even when its original executable is no longer hosted (AWE32 product page).

For restoration, start with an original driver disk or installation CD, then compare Creative’s archived index with reputable community mirrors. The Infania Creative archive preserves AWE32-era files, and its SB16/AWE listing includes a historical NT4 file entry dated January 15, 1997. Treat mirrors as archival sources, not current Creative support, and verify filenames and checksums when possible.

These drivers were built for NT Workstation 4.0 and NT Server 4.0-era systems. They are unsigned by modern standards, may be difficult to extract on current Windows, and are not evidence of compatibility with contemporary Windows versions. A period installation or carefully configured virtual machine is safer than running the installers on a production PC.
What remains uncertain
The surviving evidence confirms that Creative shipped NT4 drivers and later updates for several Sound Blaster families. It does not establish the original announcement’s publication date, exact filename or complete model list. In particular, May 2, 2000 is the verified date of the listed Live! update, not necessarily the date of the headline. Revision 10 is likewise a cataloged SB16/32 and AWE32/64 package, not proven to be the file originally announced.
The historical significance is nevertheless clear: as NT-based Windows gained ground, Creative had to maintain separate, increasingly specialized drivers for ISA sound cards, PCI boards and Live!’s software-heavy feature set. For today’s retro-computing user, identifying the exact card is more important than finding a download labeled merely “Sound Blaster NT4.”
