Build a playable Java Sudoku desktop game by separating the puzzle rules from the interface: store the board in arrays, validate moves with row, column, and box checks, solve with backtracking, then connect that model to a Swing grid. This guide uses Swing because it is included in Java’s desktop module and keeps the project focused on Java, algorithms, and event handling. It covers a reliable starting puzzle and the path to puzzle generation, reset, hints, and tests.
What you’ll build
The finished application should display a 9×9 board, distinguish original clues from editable cells, accept digits 1–9, flag conflicting moves, and provide reset and completion checks. A solver can fill the board; a generator can create new puzzles, but generating a sound puzzle requires more than deleting random clues. The examples below use Java Swing and a desktop window, not a web or Android interface.
Use Java 21 or Java 25 LTS for a stable tutorial baseline. Oracle lists Java 26 as the current feature release and Java 25 as the latest LTS release as of August 18, 2026; verify current release and licensing details on the Oracle Java downloads page. You do not need a paid IDE or cloud service for this project. Swing is part of Java’s desktop module.
Set up the project
For a small project, use an IDE such as IntelliJ IDEA’s free core features or Eclipse, or compile from the command line. A useful package layout is:

Keep each class focused: the board stores state, the solver applies rules, the generator creates puzzles, the game coordinates reset and progress, and the frame builds the UI. This separation makes the rules testable without opening a window.
With a JDK installed, a simple non-modular project can be compiled and launched from its root directory:
javac -d out src/main/java/sudoku/*.java
java -cp out sudoku.Main
If using Maven, set <maven.compiler.release>21</maven.compiler.release> in the project properties and change it only when the installed JDK supports the chosen release. For a minimal project, plain javac avoids build-tool setup; Maven or Gradle becomes useful when adding tests or dependencies.

Model the board before building the interface
Represent empty cells with 0, and use zero-based row and column indexes from 0 through 8:
int[][] current = new int[9][9];
int[][] puzzle = new int[9][9];
int[][] solution = new int[9][9];
boolean[][] fixed = new boolean[9][9];
current is the player’s changing board; puzzle preserves the starting clues for reset; solution is the answer when the game has one; and fixed identifies immutable clues. Do not decide whether a cell is fixed merely by checking whether it contains a number: player entries also contain numbers.

- The original color sudoku board game
- To solve the game - set up the board according to the puzzle card
- Colorku can be played alone or with others. Ages 8+
- Includes 104 puzzle cards and solutions – in 5 different difficulty level (Easy, Moderate, Challenging, Tough, Extreme) with puzzle card holder.
- 81 small colored wooden balls (9 red, 9 orange, 9 yellow, 9 light green, 9 dark green, 9 light blue, 9 dark blue, 9 indigo, 9 violet)
The model’s central invariant is that each nonzero value occurs no more than once in its row, column, and 3×3 box. A move can satisfy this local rule but still lead to a board with no solution. Decide whether your game rejects only immediate conflicts or also checks that a move preserves solvability.
Validate a candidate move
To find the upper-left corner of a cell’s 3×3 box, round its row and column down to multiples of three. The following method checks whether a candidate already appears in the row, column, or box:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →static boolean isValid(int[][] board, int row, int col, int value) {
for (int i = 0; i < 9; i++) {
if (board[row][i] == value || board[i][col] == value) {
return false;
}
}
int boxRow = (row / 3) * 3;
int boxCol = (col / 3) * 3;
for (int r = boxRow; r < boxRow + 3; r++) {
for (int c = boxCol; c < boxCol + 3; c++) {
if (board[r][c] == value) {
return false;
}
}
}
return true;
}
This method assumes the cell being tested is empty. When replacing a player’s existing value, temporarily clear that cell first; otherwise the existing value can conflict with itself.
Solve with backtracking
A basic solver uses depth-first search. Find an empty cell, try each legal value, and recurse. If a choice leads to a dead end, undo it and try another:
static boolean solve(int[][] board) {
for (int row = 0; row < 9; row++) {
for (int col = 0; col < 9; col++) {
if (board[row][col] != 0) continue;
for (int value = 1; value <= 9; value++) {
if (isValid(board, row, col, value)) {
board[row][col] = value;
if (solve(board)) return true;
board[row][col] = 0; // undo failed choice
}
}
return false; // no candidate works here
}
}
return true; // no empty cells remain
}
The final true means this search found a filled board consistent with the rules; it does not prove that the starting puzzle has a unique answer. Solve a copy of the puzzle if you need to preserve the original clues or current player state.

For better performance, choose the empty cell with the fewest legal candidates rather than the first empty cell. This minimum-remaining-values heuristic reduces branching on many puzzles and is a natural next step for hints. Bit masks, constraint propagation, and exact-cover methods are more advanced alternatives. A generic search solver finds a solution, but it does not necessarily explain the human-style logic behind a move.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGenerate puzzles carefully
Solving and generating are separate tasks. A straightforward generator works as follows:
- Start with an empty board and fill it using backtracking, with randomized candidate order.
- Copy the completed board as the solution.
- Remove a clue, then count how many solutions remain.
- Keep the removal only if the board still has the required properties—usually exactly one solution.
- Repeat until reaching a target clue count or another stopping rule.
A solver that stops after finding its first solution cannot test uniqueness. Make a solution counter stop as soon as it reaches two: zero means no solution, one means unique, and two means at least two. The early cutoff avoids needless search.
Clue count is only a rough difficulty signal. Two puzzles with the same number of givens can differ greatly in solving effort. Better ratings consider solver search effort or the logical techniques required; a backtracking solver’s speed is not a measure of how hard a human would find the puzzle.
Build the Swing board
For a first version, use text fields: they provide familiar keyboard input and are easy to connect to model cells. A basic GridLayout(9, 9) makes equal-sized cells, but it does not know about Sudoku’s 3×3 regions. Oracle’s GridLayout tutorial explains the equal-cell behavior.

JPanel boardPanel = new JPanel(new GridLayout(3, 3, 3, 3));
JTextField[][] cells = new JTextField[9][9];
for (int boxRow = 0; boxRow < 3; boxRow++) {
for (int boxCol = 0; boxCol < 3; boxCol++) {
JPanel box = new JPanel(new GridLayout(3, 3, 1, 1));
boardPanel.add(box);
for (int localRow = 0; localRow < 3; localRow++) {
for (int localCol = 0; localCol < 3; localCol++) {
int row = boxRow * 3 + localRow;
int col = boxCol * 3 + localCol;
JTextField cell = new JTextField();
cell.setHorizontalAlignment(JTextField.CENTER);
cells[row][col] = cell;
box.add(cell);
}
}
}
}
Nested panels make the nine regions clear; add borders or spacing to distinguish them visually. A custom-painted board offers more control over highlighting and notes, but then you must implement hit testing, keyboard focus, and accessibility behavior yourself. Start with fields and replace them only when the UI needs justify the extra work.
Keep model state authoritative
When a player edits a cell, validate input, update the model, and then refresh the field’s appearance. Do not treat the text field as the game state. A document filter can restrict typing and paste to one digit; still validate in the game logic because programmatic changes can bypass the filter.
void applyMove(int row, int col, String text) {
if (fixed[row][col]) return;
if (text.isBlank()) {
current[row][col] = 0;
cells[row][col].setBackground(Color.WHITE);
return;
}
if (!text.matches("[1-9]")) {
cells[row][col].setBackground(Color.PINK);
return;
}
int oldValue = current[row][col];
current[row][col] = 0;
int value = Integer.parseInt(text);
if (isValid(current, row, col, value)) {
current[row][col] = value;
cells[row][col].setBackground(Color.WHITE);
} else {
current[row][col] = oldValue;
cells[row][col].setBackground(Color.PINK);
}
}
In production code, avoid leaving invalid text displayed while the model retains a different value; either restore the prior display or explicitly mark the cell as an unaccepted draft. Also ensure that the edit listener does not recursively trigger itself while the UI is being refreshed.
Use a separate fixed-cell check to prevent clue edits, provide an obvious way to clear a player entry, and do not rely on color alone to indicate an error. A status label or accessible text helps users who cannot distinguish the colors.
Add reset, new game, and completion checks
- Reset: Restore
currentfrompuzzle, clear error styling and status, and reset optional timer or mistake counters. - New Game: Replace the puzzle and solution, rebuild the fixed map, and refresh every cell.
- Completion: Check that the board is full and that every row, column, and box is valid.
- Solve: Solve a copy, then display the result deliberately; do not accidentally overwrite the player’s board during a failed search.
Comparing the player board with a known solution is a useful game-specific correctness check, but it is not a substitute for independently validating a user-provided grid. Keep those two checks conceptually separate: a locally legal move may be wrong for the chosen answer, and a completed valid board may be a different solution if the puzzle was not unique.
Best Value
- Easy to Hard - Includes grid boards of 4x4 Grids, 6x6 Grids, and 9x9 Grids, ranging from easy to difficult, step by step for novice to expert players.
- Easy Storage - Designed with a drawer container, easy for storage and carry around.
- No More Erasing - Double-sided tiles for trial and error, no need to erase wrong number; no pencil or paper required.
- Multicoloured Tiles - Multicolored tiles also allow players to solve the puzzles with vibrant colors in addition to numbers.
- Promote Logical Thinking - Logical skills are the core requirement for playing a Sudoku puzzle. The difficulty level depends on the number of clues given, the more complicated inference pattern will become as you play more challenging puzzle.
For undo, store each edit in a Deque<Move> with row, column, prior value, and new value. A second stack can support redo.
Run Swing on the right thread
Create and update Swing components on the Event Dispatch Thread (EDT). Oracle’s Swing package documentation describes the threading model and the general rule that Swing is not thread-safe. Start the window this way:
public static void main(String[] args) {
SwingUtilities.invokeLater(() -> {
SudokuFrame frame = new SudokuFrame();
frame.setTitle("Sudoku");
frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
frame.pack();
frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
frame.setVisible(true);
});
}
For keyboard actions such as moving between cells or entering a selected digit, Swing key bindings are generally more predictable than a KeyListener that depends on which component currently has focus. See the JComponent API for keystroke handling.
Basic solving is usually quick, but puzzle generation with repeated uniqueness checks may take longer. Do not run potentially expensive generation directly inside a button’s action listener if it can freeze the UI. Use SwingWorker for the background computation, update Swing components on the EDT, and disable or cancel the New Game action while generation is active.
Test the rules and the game
Do not rely only on looking at the finished window. Test the model and solver independently:
- A legal placement succeeds; a duplicate in the same row, column, or box fails.
- A known solvable puzzle is solved without changing the saved puzzle.
- An invalid starting board is rejected, and an unsolvable board produces failure.
- A uniqueness counter distinguishes one solution from two or more, including an empty board.
- Reset clears player entries but preserves clues; fixed cells remain immutable.
- The generator’s output has a solution and, when required, exactly one.
Then test the UI: all 81 cells appear, clues are distinguishable, invalid input is communicated, deletion works, reset restores the starting board, New Game refreshes it, and completion is not announced prematurely. Include pasted text, zero, multi-character input, and keyboard deletion in input checks.
Useful extensions
Once the basic game works, add a timer, mistake counter, notes/candidates, hint button, undo/redo, save/load, themes, or a difficulty selector. A hint feature can return a legal candidate from the solver, but a human-readable hint requires reasoning logic beyond ordinary backtracking. Difficulty labels should be based on a stated method rather than clue count alone.
