To add a custom thumbnail, create a JPG or PNG, sign in to YouTube Studio, open Content, select your video, choose Upload file in the Thumbnail section, and save. Your channel must be verified. For a standard video, YouTube recommends 3,840 × 2,160 pixels (16:9); for a Short, use 2,160 × 3,840 pixels (9:16).
Choose the correct thumbnail format first
YouTube treats standard videos and Shorts differently. Start with the format that matches where the video will be published.
| Content | Recommended size | Aspect ratio | Minimum stated dimension | Upload-size limit listed by YouTube |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3,840 × 2,160 px | 16:9 | At least 640 px wide | 2 MB on mobile; 50 MB on desktop |
| Short | 2,160 × 3,840 px | 9:16 | At least 640 px high | 50 MB on desktop |
These are YouTube recommendations and stated limits, not guarantees of better click-through performance. YouTube can change limits or apply account-specific restrictions, so check the upload panel if your account shows a different requirement.

Use a 16:9 canvas for regular uploads. Export as JPG or PNG. A 3,840 × 2,160 image gives YouTube the recommended pixel dimensions while preserving detail when it is resized across phones, computers, and televisions.

Shorts canvas
Use a vertical 9:16 canvas for Shorts. YouTube recommends 2,160 × 3,840 pixels. A horizontal 16:9 image may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and Subscriptions pages for a vertical video. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms.
Make the image before you open YouTube Studio
You can create the artwork in any editor that exports JPG or PNG; YouTube does not require a particular application or device. Build the image at the final canvas size, then check the exported file against the limit for the device you will use to upload it.
Use one clear subject
Show the person, object, result, or moment that best represents the video. Leave enough contrast between the subject and the background so the idea remains legible when the thumbnail is displayed small.

If words are necessary, use a brief phrase that adds information rather than repeating the title. Test the exported file at a small on-screen size before uploading; thin type, fine detail, and low-contrast colors can disappear after scaling.
Reserve safe space
Keep important faces, logos, and words away from the extreme edges. YouTube overlays and responsive layouts can crop or cover edge content in different surfaces, especially on vertical images.

Export and inspect
- Confirm the canvas is 16:9 for a standard video or 9:16 for a Short.
- Export to JPG or PNG.
- Check pixel dimensions and file size.
- Open the exported file, not just the editor project, to catch missing fonts, transparency changes, or accidental cropping.
Upload a custom thumbnail for a standard video
- Sign in to YouTube and open YouTube Studio.
- Select Content in the left menu.
- Open the video you want to edit.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file.
- Select your JPG or PNG, wait for the preview to finish processing, and review the crop.
- Choose Save.
Custom thumbnail uploads require a verified account. If the upload control is missing, verify the channel and reload Studio. YouTube says changes can take time to appear on every surface.
Upload a custom thumbnail for a Short
YouTube’s documented custom-Shorts workflow is in Studio on a computer:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Choose Shorts and select the Short.
- In the Thumbnail section, upload your vertical image.
- Save the video.
Use the 9:16 artwork described above. Because vertical videos can receive different crops in different feeds, inspect the result wherever YouTube provides a preview.
Use YouTube’s generated suggestions when available
YouTube’s Ask Studio can analyze a video’s transcript and themes, suggest thumbnail concepts, accept reference images, and respond to follow-up requests such as making text larger. Availability is not guaranteed for every channel or geography. Treat suggestions as drafts: check that the image accurately represents the video and follows Community Guidelines before saving it.
Verification, policy, and account limits
Verify before designing around the upload
Only verified accounts can upload custom thumbnails. Verification is separate from whether a particular image is accepted.
Rank #3
Follow Community Guidelines
Thumbnails must comply with YouTube Community Guidelines. YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative imagery, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples that can lead to rejection and a strike. Repeated violations can remove custom-thumbnail privileges for 30 days or, in serious or repeated cases, lead to account termination.

Expect regional and channel-specific limits
YouTube documents a daily custom-thumbnail upload limit, but says availability can depend on country or region and channel history. If you reach a limit, wait for it to reset rather than repeatedly retrying the same upload.
Troubleshoot a rejected or missing thumbnail
The Upload file button is unavailable
Most often, the channel is not verified, you are in the wrong Studio view, or the account has a temporary thumbnail restriction. Verify the channel, open the video from Content, and check for any Studio policy notice.
The file is too large
Check how you are uploading. YouTube lists a 2 MB limit for video thumbnails uploaded on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. Re-export as JPG, reduce quality modestly, or resize while retaining the required aspect ratio. Do not assume a mobile limit applies when using desktop Studio.
The image has the wrong shape
Rebuild the canvas instead of stretching the artwork. Use 16:9 for a standard video and 9:16 for a Short. Stretching a face or logo can make the final thumbnail look incorrect even when the upload succeeds.
Rank #4
The thumbnail looks different in feeds
Different YouTube surfaces can crop or resize the same file. Keep essential content inside a central safe area and preview both desktop and mobile layouts where possible. For vertical videos, remember that YouTube may show an automatically generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore, and Subscriptions.
The thumbnail has not changed yet
YouTube says changes can take time to appear. Confirm that you selected Save, then check again after processing and refresh the relevant page.
The image is rejected for policy reasons
Remove prohibited or misleading material and upload a compliant version. A rejection can carry a strike; repeated offenses can affect your ability to use custom thumbnails.

If you need a clean image of a webpage, ScreenshotNeo can capture it through one request instead of configuring a headless browser. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. This is useful for capturing a page or visual reference that you will then place in your own thumbnail; it does not replace YouTube’s thumbnail upload rules.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters. A basic WebP capture looks like this:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also offers full-page and element capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, device and retina settings, dark mode, request blocking, cookies and headers, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, PDFs, signed links, usage data, an OpenAPI specification, and an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every feature is on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

A practical pre-publish checklist
- Is the image the correct 16:9 or 9:16 shape?
- Does it meet YouTube’s pixel recommendation or minimum dimension?
- Is the file a JPG or PNG and within the limit for your upload device?
- Can the subject and any text be understood at a small size?
- Does the image accurately represent the video?
- Does it comply with YouTube Community Guidelines?
- Have you saved the change in Studio and allowed time for propagation?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upload a custom thumbnail before my channel is verified?
No. YouTube requires channel verification for custom thumbnail uploads.
Can I use the same thumbnail file for a video and a Short?
You can upload image files to both, but the recommended canvases differ: standard videos use 16:9 and Shorts use 9:16. Recreate the artwork for the destination instead of stretching one version.
Does YouTube guarantee that a custom thumbnail appears everywhere?
No. A vertical video may receive an automatically generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore, and Subscriptions, while the custom image remains visible in other documented surfaces.
The Bottom Line
Create a correctly sized, policy-compliant image, upload it from the matching YouTube Studio workflow, and verify the result on the surfaces where viewers will see it.
