Seeing “Could not connect to ‘Apple TV’” usually means your iPhone, iPad, or Mac found the Apple TV but could not establish an AirPlay session. It does not automatically mean the Apple TV is defective.
Start by checking that both devices are on the same local network, then verify AirPlay access, restart the devices, and test another app. Do not reset the Apple TV until these simpler checks are complete.
First, identify which Apple TV problem you have
This guide addresses an AirPlay connection problem: streaming or mirroring from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible smart TV. It is different from an Apple TV app sign-in problem or an Apple TV internet connection error.

- Apple TV app failure: The Apple TV app cannot authenticate or reach Apple’s service.
- Network failure: The Apple TV itself reports that it cannot connect to the internet.
- Content restriction: A particular app or video does not permit AirPlay.
AirPlay can be used from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to an Apple TV, an Apple TV 4K, a Mac configured as an AirPlay Receiver, or a compatible AirPlay 2 smart TV. Video streaming and full-screen mirroring are separate functions. See Apple’s AirPlay instructions for supported controls and destinations.

1. Check the network before changing settings
Connect the source device and destination to the same local network, not merely to the same internet connection. On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Wi-Fi. On a Mac, select Wi-Fi from the menu bar or open System Settings > Wi-Fi. On Apple TV, open its network settings and confirm the preferred network.
Check for these common mismatches:
- One device is on a guest network, such as
Home-Guest, while the other is onHome. - The devices are connected to different mesh nodes or isolated network segments.
- Your router blocks communication between wireless clients.
- The Apple TV uses Ethernet while the source uses Wi-Fi, and the router separates wired and wireless devices. This arrangement can work when both are on the same LAN.
- Wi-Fi has disconnected and the source device is using cellular data.
Keep the devices reasonably close to the router and Apple TV while testing. Ordinary web browsing may work even when local AirPlay discovery is blocked. Apple’s Apple TV network troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the same preferred Wi-Fi network and router configuration.
2. Stop AirPlay and refresh the connection
Close the video app, stop the current AirPlay attempt, and try again from the player’s AirPlay button or Control Center. On an iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring for mirroring, or use the AirPlay control inside a supported video app.
For a low-risk network refresh:
- On an iPhone or iPad, turn on Airplane Mode.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Turn Airplane Mode off and reconnect to Wi-Fi.
- On a Mac, turn Wi-Fi off briefly, then turn it on again.
- Retry AirPlay.
This clears a temporary discovery or network-session problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix.

3. Check AirPlay receiving and access settings
iPhone or iPad
Open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity and review the relevant AirPlay and Continuity options. If the device repeatedly chooses the wrong destination, review its automatic AirPlay behavior.
Mac
Open System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff. Check AirPlay Receiver and confirm that the selected users are allowed to connect when using the Mac as the receiving device.
Apple TV
On Apple TV, review the AirPlay-related controls under Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home, or the equivalent menu shown by your tvOS version. Confirm that AirPlay is enabled, check who is allowed to connect, and note whether an AirPlay password is required.

Menu names vary by model, operating-system release, language, and whether the destination is an Apple TV or a third-party smart TV. Apple’s current AirPlay troubleshooting page covers receiving, Home restrictions, passwords, proximity, and restart checks.
4. Restart everything in the right order
- Close the app attempting AirPlay.
- Restart the iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Restart the Apple TV or compatible smart TV.
- Restart the router and mesh system, if applicable.
- Wait until Wi-Fi has fully returned, then try AirPlay again.
On Apple TV 4K, use Settings > System > Restart. If it is unresponsive, disconnect its power, wait briefly, reconnect it, and allow it to boot completely. The Apple TV restart guide documents the current path.
5. Install available updates
Update every device involved:
- iPhone or iPad: Settings > General > Software Update.
- Mac: System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Apple TV: Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software.
- Smart TV: Use the television manufacturer’s software-update menu.
- Router or mesh system: Check the manufacturer’s app or administration page.
Updates can correct compatibility bugs, but they are not guaranteed to fix AirPlay and can change menu labels. Keep the Apple TV connected to power during an update. See Apple’s Apple TV software-update instructions.
6. Test whether only one app is affected
Try AirPlay with a photo in Photos, a locally stored video, another streaming app, and—if appropriate—full-screen mirroring from Control Center.

- Everything fails: Focus on the network, AirPlay settings, VPN, firewall, router, or device software.
- Only one app fails: The app may not support AirPlay, may require its own AirPlay control, or may restrict the content.
- Mirroring works but video streaming fails: Basic discovery is probably working; investigate the app, digital-rights restrictions, or its AirPlay implementation.
- The Apple TV appears but connection fails: Check passwords, Home restrictions, firewall or VPN filtering, and network isolation.
AirPlay is not supported by every video app or every piece of content. Restarting cannot override an app’s licensing or playback restrictions.

A VPN can interfere with local-device discovery and traffic. Temporarily disconnect it on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac and retry. If the VPN offers an Allow local network access or Allow LAN traffic option, use that instead when available.
On a Mac, review System Settings > Network > Firewall. Also check third-party antivirus, parental-control, endpoint-security, and network-filtering software. Do not permanently disable protection or use a blanket “turn off the firewall” fix; make the smallest temporary change needed for testing and restore the protection afterward.

- Wireless client isolation or AP isolation
- Guest-network isolation
- Device-to-device blocking
- Separate VLANs
- Multicast or Bonjour filtering
- Mesh-node isolation
Only change advanced multicast or isolation settings if the basic checks fail and you know how to restore the original configuration. A temporary test on the same non-guest network can confirm whether the router is the cause. A phone hotspot may also be useful diagnostically, but some hotspot configurations prevent connected devices from discovering one another.

8. Compare wired and wireless Apple TV connections
If the Apple TV uses Ethernet, temporarily test it over Wi-Fi if possible, or verify that the router bridges wired and wireless clients on the same LAN. If AirPlay works on one connection but not the other, the issue is probably network segmentation or router configuration rather than a defective Apple TV.
Do not buy a new router or mesh system before checking isolation, VPN, firewall, and VLAN settings. A wired connection can make an unstable Wi-Fi environment more reliable, but Ethernet will not fix a misconfigured LAN.
9. Reset Apple TV only as a last resort
A reset can remove corrupted settings, but it erases accounts and configurations. Before using it, confirm that you know your Apple Account and streaming-service passwords, Wi-Fi details, Home or HomeKit configuration, app settings, and that your remote is available.
On Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Reset.
- Choose Reset or Reset and Update.
Reset returns the Apple TV to factory settings without requiring an internet connection. Reset and Update also installs software updates, so it requires internet access. Apple explains the consequences in its Apple TV reset guide.
If the reset fails, the Apple TV will not update, or the same problem remains across multiple source devices and networks, contact Apple Support. Repeated resets are unlikely to repair a hardware or network fault.
Use the error’s behavior to find the likely cause

| Failure continues after a reset | Test another source device and network, then contact Apple if the fault follows the Apple TV. |
When replacement hardware is justified
Do not replace the Apple TV solely because this message appears. Consider service or replacement only after testing multiple source devices and, ideally, another network, and after ruling out router isolation and software problems.
In the U.S., Apple’s current buying page lists Apple TV 4K pricing at $129 for the 64GB Wi-Fi model and $149 for the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model when observed. Prices and availability can change; check Apple’s product page before purchasing. The Ethernet model may help with unreliable Wi-Fi, but it cannot correct a misconfigured local network.
