The Corsair Carbide Air 240 is still a clever compact case, but it is no longer a sensible default for most new PCs in 2026. Its approximately 33-liter, dual-chamber cube layout remains appealing for carefully selected Mini-ITX and Micro-ATX hardware. However, its 135 mm CPU-cooler limit, lack of front USB-C, aging airflow design, and uncertain used-market condition make a modern Micro-ATX case the safer choice for most new builds.

What is the Corsair Carbide Air 240?

The Carbide Air 240 is a discontinued compact cube-style PC case from Corsair’s older Carbide family. It is the smaller sibling of the Carbide Air 540, but the two cases should not be treated as interchangeable: the Air 540 supports larger ATX-class motherboards, while the Air 240 is designed only for Mini-ITX and Micro-ATX.

The Air 240 divides the chassis into two chambers. The motherboard, CPU, graphics card and primary airflow path occupy one side. The power supply, drives and much of the cable storage sit behind the motherboard tray in the second chamber. That arrangement makes the case look unusually clean when assembled and explains how it achieves a compact footprint without requiring an SFX power supply.

Corsair still lists replacement top and side-panel part numbers, but the complete case is not presented as a normal current Corsair retail product. A reseller also marks it discontinued. In practice, buyers in 2026 should treat listings as used, old stock or region-specific remaining inventory rather than expect normal current-case availability. See Corsair’s replacement top panel, replacement side panel and the reseller’s discontinued listing.

Quick specifications

Feature Corsair Carbide Air 240
Motherboards Mini-ITX, Micro-ATX
Dimensions 397 × 260 × 320 mm
Approximate external volume 33 liters
Weight 5.6 kg
CPU-cooler height Up to 135 mm
GPU length Up to 330 mm with front fans; 360 mm without front fans
Radiators Front 240 mm; rear 120 mm; dual-240 mm layouts may be possible depending on configuration
Power supply Standard ATX PSU, with length and cable clearance requiring individual verification
Front I/O Two USB 3.0 ports, headphone, microphone, power and reset controls
Original fans Two front 120 mm fans and one rear 120 mm fan
Current status Discontinued or old stock; availability varies

These specifications come from the Corsair installation manual. The approximately 33-liter figure is calculated from the published external dimensions, so usable internal volume is lower after accounting for the frame, divider, panels and component clearances.

Dual-chamber design and physical layout

The Air 240 uses width for a second chamber instead of simply making a conventional tower narrower. The component chamber has the motherboard, CPU cooler and graphics card. The rear chamber hides the ATX power supply, drive hardware and excess cable length.

This was an unusual and effective design for its era. It keeps the PSU’s heat and cable clutter away from the main component area, gives the graphics card a direct airflow path and lets the visible side remain relatively tidy. The case can also be rotated, with the manual showing how to reposition the Corsair logo and adjust its orientation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That layout does not make cable management automatic. The rear chamber can become difficult to close when a long PSU, several modular cables and multiple drives occupy the same space. The case is compact enough that installation order matters.

Motherboard compatibility: Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX only

The Air 240 supports Mini-ITX and Micro-ATX motherboards. It is not an ATX case. The presence of a conventional ATX power-supply bay does not mean a full-size ATX motherboard will fit.

This is the most important compatibility distinction for prospective buyers. If the build requires an ATX motherboard, choose a larger case such as the Corsair Air 540 or a current ATX chassis instead. The Air 540 is substantially larger and supports ATX and E-ATX-class configurations; its specifications should not be used as a proxy for the Air 240. See Corsair’s Air 540 product page.

Graphics-card compatibility is more than length

The manual lists up to 360 mm of graphics-card length without front fans and 330 mm with front fans installed. Those are useful starting points, but they are not a guarantee that a modern graphics card will be comfortable in the case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, check all of the following:

  • Card length, including the cooler shroud and any front protrusions.
  • Card thickness and slot count.
  • Clearance to the side panel and internal divider.
  • The bend radius required by the card’s power connector.
  • Whether a front radiator and its fans occupy the same space.
  • Whether the card’s cooler can draw enough air through the older front-panel arrangement.

A card can fit within the published 330 mm length and still be unsuitable if it is a very thick triple-slot design or if its 12VHPWR or 12V-2×6 cable must bend sharply against the side panel. Never force the panel closed over a stressed power cable.

CPU-cooler compatibility: the 135 mm limit matters

The maximum CPU-cooler height is approximately 135 mm. That rules out most full-size dual-tower air coolers and many popular tower coolers. Suitable choices are generally low-profile coolers, compact single-tower coolers below the limit or liquid cooling.

A 135 mm cooler should not automatically be considered safe simply because its product listing says exactly 135 mm. Heat-pipe ends, motherboard heatsinks, mounting hardware, manufacturing tolerances and panel shape can all affect the final fit. Leave some margin where possible.

Liquid cooling is a different compatibility question. A 240 mm radiator can fit, but the radiator, fans, tubing, motherboard heatsinks, memory and graphics card must all coexist. Radiator support does not mean every 240 mm AIO works with every GPU and motherboard combination.

Power-supply compatibility

The Air 240 accepts a conventional ATX power supply, which is a useful advantage over many genuinely small Mini-ITX cases. However, buyers should select the specific PSU carefully.

  • Ample Interior: Explore ample interior space for Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX motherboards, ensuring easy and future expansion
  • Components Clearance: Accommodates CPU coolers with a max height of 159mm, GPU cards up to 360mm, and PSU up to 160mm in length.
  • Versatile Cooling: Maximize cooling performance with a 240mm liquid cooler and 5 fans.
  • Modular I/O Panel: You have the flexibility to adjust its position at the front, top, or bottom on both sides
  • Edge-To-Edge Panel: Show off your meticulous build through the transparent side panel with pride.

Check the PSU’s physical length, modular connector placement, cable stiffness and cable length. Also account for installed drive cages and any front radiator. A long PSU may technically enter the chamber but leave too little room for cables or prevent the rear panel from closing.

A searchable extraction of the manual reports a 360 mm maximum PSU length. That figure is not credible as a practical clearance value in a case only 397 mm long and appears to be an OCR or layout-extraction error. It should not be used as a safe PSU limit. Measure the available space in the exact configuration, or use the original manual’s diagrams and verify the result physically.

Cooling and radiator support

The original design includes two 120 mm front fans and one 120 mm rear fan. The manual describes front support for a 240 mm radiator and rear support for a 120 mm radiator. It also describes layouts capable of accommodating one or two 240 mm radiators, depending on component placement and thickness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The intended airflow path is straightforward: cool air enters the component chamber through the front, passes over the motherboard and graphics card, then exits through the rear. The PSU, drives and cables are isolated in the second chamber.

There are important modern limitations:

  • A front radiator and fans reduce available graphics-card space.
  • Radiator thickness, fan thickness and hose routing change the clearance calculation.
  • Motherboard heatsinks and tall memory can interfere with radiator hardware.
  • The original fans are old-generation components and should not be assumed to match current high-performance fans.
  • The case’s ventilation is not equivalent to a current full-mesh Micro-ATX chassis.
  • High-power modern GPUs may place more demand on the front intake than the original design anticipated.

Historical reviews can explain the design, but they are not evidence of current thermal performance with today’s CPUs and GPUs. Do not buy the Air 240 expecting a modern controlled thermal result unless you have tested the exact hardware and fan configuration yourself.

Storage and the second chamber

The case provides 3.5-inch drive trays or cages and 2.5-inch SSD trays in the rear chamber. The precise arrangement matters because removable cages and trays can affect PSU space, cable routing and radiator clearance.

Front I/O and modern connectivity

The front panel provides two USB 3.0 ports, headphone and microphone connections, plus power and reset controls. It does not provide native front USB-C.

That matters more in 2026 than it did when the case launched. A modern motherboard may include an internal USB-C Type-E header that the Air 240 cannot use without an aftermarket retrofit. A front USB-C module may be possible with a bracket or replacement assembly, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed plug-and-play upgrade.

The case also has no modern integrated fan or RGB controller comparable to newer Corsair cases. Fan and lighting control will depend on the motherboard, separate hubs or aftermarket accessories.

Recommended build order

The Air 240 is easier to build when the two chambers are planned together rather than filled in an arbitrary order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remove the top and side panels. Do not try to work through small openings.
  2. Decide on drive cages and radiator placement. Their positions affect PSU and GPU clearance.
  3. Install the motherboard in the component chamber, including the CPU, memory and backplate that may be difficult to reach later.
  4. Install the PSU in the separate chamber and route the 24-pin, CPU EPS and GPU power leads through the divider openings.
  5. Install storage and connect its power and data cables before the chamber becomes crowded.
  6. Install the front fans or radiator while checking the graphics-card clearance, including the thickness of the fans.
  7. Install the GPU and inspect its power-cable bend radius before closing the side panel.
  8. Connect front-panel wiring: USB, audio, power switch and reset switch.
  9. Test the system with the panels off. Confirm fans, USB, audio, storage and power controls.
  10. Close the panels only after checking for cable bulges, connector strain and trapped tubing.

The dual-chamber design can make the finished build cleaner, but excess modular cables are still a problem. Use only the cables required by the build and avoid packing the rear chamber so tightly that the panel clips or cable connectors are under pressure.

What remains good about the Air 240?

  • Distinctive horizontal cube appearance.
  • Compact external volume for a case that accepts an ATX PSU and long graphics cards.
  • Useful separation between the component chamber and PSU/storage chamber.
  • Mini-ITX and Micro-ATX support.
  • Support for a 240 mm radiator in appropriate configurations.
  • Good cable concealment when the PSU and drive selection is sensible.
  • Replacement-panel part numbers remain documented by Corsair.

What makes it a poor default in 2026?

  • The complete case is discontinued or difficult to find new.
  • No native front USB-C.
  • Only 135 mm of CPU-cooler height.
  • Front radiator installation can compromise GPU clearance.
  • Thick modern graphics cards require careful side-panel and power-cable checks.
  • The original fans and filter arrangement are aging.
  • Used examples may have cracked acrylic, missing trays, damaged clips or missing screws.
  • Replacement-panel listings do not guarantee stock in your country.
  • Current mesh cases generally offer more forgiving airflow and compatibility.

Used-buying checklist

If you are considering a second-hand Air 240, inspect the exact case rather than relying on a stock photograph.

  • Both side panels are present and the window is not cracked.
  • Top panel, thumbscrews and panel clips are intact.
  • All drive trays and cages are included.
  • Motherboard standoffs and fan screws are present.
  • Front USB, audio, power and reset controls work.
  • The PSU chamber frame is not bent.
  • Fans spin without grinding or excessive noise.
  • Dust filters, where applicable, are present and usable.
  • There is no corrosion, liquid damage or severe dust contamination.
  • Photos show the Air 240, not the larger Air 540 or the visually related Crystal 280X.
  • The asking price leaves room for replacement fans and missing accessories.

Corsair listing a replacement panel SKU is useful evidence that the part exists, but it is not a promise that the part is currently in stock or available in every region. Inspect panels before purchase whenever possible.

Who should buy the Air 240?

Buy it when:

  • You already own one and want to refresh the system.
  • You specifically want a horizontal dual-chamber cube.
  • Your motherboard is Mini-ITX or Micro-ATX.
  • Your CPU cooler is comfortably below 135 mm, or your AIO arrangement has been checked carefully.
  • Your graphics card fits in length, thickness, power-cable clearance and airflow terms.
  • You can buy a complete, clean example at a meaningfully lower price than a modern case.
  • You are comfortable sourcing old fans or replacement parts.

Avoid it when:

  • You need an ATX motherboard.
  • You want a 150–165 mm tower cooler.
  • You are installing a very thick flagship GPU.
  • Front USB-C is important.
  • You want a current all-mesh, dust-filtered case.
  • You need a large front radiator and a long graphics card together.
  • You expect easy warranty service and abundant replacement parts.
  • The used price is close to a newer Micro-ATX case.

Modern alternatives

Corsair 2000D Airflow

The Corsair 2000D Airflow is the natural Corsair alternative for a Mini-ITX buyer who wants a current product and more mesh ventilation. It uses a vertical layout and supports Mini-ITX only, so it is not a replacement for the Air 240 if you need Micro-ATX or the horizontal cube format. Official price displays have varied, so check the current regional listing rather than relying on an old price snapshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fractal Design Pop Mini Air

The Fractal Design Pop Mini Air is a more conventional Micro-ATX tower with a cleanable mesh front and support for up to a 240 mm radiator. It is less distinctive and less cube-like, but it is generally easier to build in and better aligned with current cooling expectations.

Cooler Master Q300L V2

The Cooler Master Q300L V2 is a budget-oriented Mini-ITX/Micro-ATX case that can be positioned horizontally or vertically. Its cited specifications include up to 159 mm CPU-cooler height, 360 mm GPU length and 160 mm PSU length. It lacks the Air 240’s split-chamber character, but newer availability and taller cooler support can make it more practical for a budget build.

ASUS Prime AP201 and Lian Li A3-mATX

The ASUS Prime AP201 and Lian Li A3-mATX belong in the same comparison category: modern compact cases aimed at Micro-ATX builders. They use newer layouts and airflow strategies and are generally more suitable for current large GPUs and tower coolers than the Air 240. Verify the exact revision’s GPU, PSU, radiator and CPU-cooler clearances before buying, because their layouts differ substantially from Corsair’s dual-chamber cube.

Final verdict

The Corsair Carbide Air 240 remains a compelling legacy case for a narrow use case: a compact, horizontal Mini-ITX or Micro-ATX build with carefully selected components. Its dual-chamber layout is still smart, and its ability to use an ATX PSU and support a 240 mm radiator gives it more flexibility than its size suggests.

For a new 2026 build, however, it is not the safest general recommendation. Buy one only when the condition is clear, the price is low enough to justify discontinued hardware, and every component has been checked for three-dimensional fit. For most new Micro-ATX systems, a current mesh case with USB-C, taller cooler clearance and predictable parts support is the better investment.
