The Core Temp Official Developer Thread is an AnandTech forum discussion where the developer, posting as “The Coolest,” shares release notes, test builds, processor-support updates and troubleshooting explanations. The latest release explicitly posted by the developer in the thread is Core Temp 1.20.1, dated May 2, 2026. Treat that as the latest version posted there—not proof that it is the newest file currently available on the official download page.
What the Core Temp thread is—and what it is not
This is a long-running developer discussion, not a product review or a polished user manual. It has reached at least 13 pages, with developer and user activity reported into 2026. Its value is the direct record of changes, compatibility questions and explanations that may be specific to a CPU generation or software build.
Core Temp is a focused CPU-monitoring utility. It can display processor and core temperatures, processor identification, load and frequency-related information, and other CPU telemetry; features such as tray display, logging, plugins and overheat protection are also part of the program’s use. It is not a comprehensive monitor for every GPU, drive, motherboard, fan and voltage sensor. The thread’s earlier pages show the long history of processor detection and sensor-support work.
When reading posts, distinguish developer release notes and explanations from requested test reports and user anecdotes. A user report can identify a possible failure mode, but does not establish that every system behaves that way.

What is the latest version mentioned in the thread?
The latest developer-posted release identified in the thread is Core Temp 1.20.1, dated May 2, 2026. Its notes list three fixes:
- Ryzen temperatures failing to appear or update after reboot or sleep.
- A “Not responding” issue during or after startup.
- Incorrect Fahrenheit TjMax values being passed to shared memory and plugins.
These are the changes attributed to 1.20.1 in the developer’s thread posts. Check the official ALCPU product page for the current downloadable file; a version mentioned in a forum post and the file presently offered for download are not necessarily the same thing. A third-party page, core-temp.com, still describes 1.19.5 as current, illustrating why it should not take precedence over the developer’s own posts or official download page.
What changed in the recent releases?
Core Temp 1.19.5
The developer’s September 2025 notes describe broad processor and interface work. AMD support covered many Zen 4 and Zen 5 desktop, mobile, Threadripper and EPYC families, with per-CCD and per-core temperatures on supported processors and TDP or TjMax detection on many Zen models. Intel additions included Sapphire Rapids, Emerald Rapids, Granite Rapids, Lunar Lake M and preliminary Panther Lake support. The notes qualify some coverage as applying to “most models” or as preliminary; a family name is not a guarantee for every CPU, laptop implementation, BIOS or engineering sample.

Other changes included Windows 10-or-newer Dark Mode, effective core-frequency readings, more configurable tray information, P-core/E-core indicators and Windows Event Log reporting for overheat-protection events. The release also improved frequency detection and tightened driver access with security fixes. It removed Mini-Mode and the TjMax adjustment option, and added display of both Tdie and Tctl on applicable Zen 1 processors. These details are in the 1.19.5 notes in the thread.
Core Temp 1.20
Version 1.20 added configurable notification-area sensors, a battery indicator, an updated Mini-Mode and display zoom at Options → Settings → Display. It also added processor-name tooltips when a name does not fit. Its fixes addressed AMD and Intel detection and readings, crashes, BCLK reporting on some Intel generations 10 and 11 and certain AMD K8 systems, TjMax on some Zen 1 CPUs, minimized-window Min/Max/Avg fields, startup and single-CCD Ryzen behavior, DPI and window positioning, and AMD K8 and model-name detection. The notes also mention an improvement to the G15 applet and a configuration-file change that may reset some settings to defaults. The release included a driver-security fix and a fix for BSODs when Kernel-mode Hardware-enforced Stack Protection is enabled. See the version 1.20 notes for the developer’s list.
How to read the support claims
“Support” can mean a processor was recognized, a particular sensor path was implemented, or a build was tested on selected hardware. It does not establish identical readings on every board and firmware combination. The thread is particularly useful when you have a recent or unusual processor, because it preserves model-specific discussion rather than collapsing it into a blanket compatibility claim.

Why Core Temp readings may differ from another monitor
A number’s label and source matter. In a Ryzen voltage discussion, the developer explained that Core Temp was reporting VID, which is not necessarily the same quantity as actual Vcore. Comparing two values both casually called “voltage” can therefore be misleading. The explanation is in the thread’s voltage discussion.
- TjMax is a processor-specific thermal limit or reference used by thermal-management logic; detection and reporting can vary by generation.
- Tdie is a die-temperature reading used on applicable AMD processors.
- Tctl is a control-temperature value. Depending on the processor, it may include an offset or serve control purposes, so it should not automatically be treated as identical to Tdie.
- VID, Vcore, package power and core temperature are distinct telemetry fields, even when interfaces use short labels.
The thread notes that both Tdie and Tctl can be shown on applicable Zen 1 processors, and that later releases corrected some TjMax reporting and detection. Do not assume one label is the universally “real” temperature across every AMD generation. A discrepancy alone does not show that one application is broken; compare the exact field and sensor source first.
How to troubleshoot missing, stale or suspicious readings
- Record your system and build. Note the CPU model, Core Temp version, motherboard, BIOS and (on AMD systems where relevant) AGESA, Windows version, and the exact sensor or value that is missing or unexpected.
- Check the official thread and update. Compare your CPU generation and symptom with the developer’s latest posts. The developer-posted 1.20.1 notes specifically address Ryzen temperature readings that fail after reboot or sleep; use the ALCPU page to check the available download.
- Restart, then test both reboot and sleep/resume. A reading that returns after restarting the program may still fail again after a system power-state change. Check whether the value updates over time rather than relying on a single glance.
- Identify what is missing. Establish whether the entire temperature section is absent, only particular cores are missing, or readings are present but stale. A report in the thread describes a case where only CCDs and average core loads appeared because the expected core-temperature section was not detected; that is a reported case, not a universal symptom. See the relevant discussion.
- Cross-check like with like. Compare the same sensor and field in another reputable monitor. Do not compare VID directly with Vcore or assume two differently labelled temperature fields measure the same thing.
- Report a reproducible symptom. Include the hardware and software details above, steps that reproduce the issue, and whether it began after reboot, sleep, a BIOS change or an update. “Temperatures are wrong” alone is not enough to distinguish detection, interpretation and update failures.
AMD PM-table readings: useful, but not a universal guarantee
In August 2024, the developer described a substantial rewrite and public testing for AMD Ryzen systems. It added support for AMD PM tables to obtain per-core temperature information when the relevant data was available. The developer said the data format was not documented in AMD’s public documentation, described the work as reverse engineering and cautioned users to proceed at their own risk. A list of tested Ryzen, Threadripper and mobile Ryzen processors is not proof that every Ryzen CPU or firmware combination is covered. The developer’s account is in the PM-table discussion.

Could Core Temp affect performance or stability?
A user reported that launching Core Temp appeared to leave a Ryzen system near a low frequency and prevent expected boost behavior. The developer could not reproduce or confirm the cause; the discussion raised PBO and AGESA as possible factors. This is a configuration-specific, unconfirmed report, not evidence that Core Temp generally throttles Ryzen systems. It appears in the frequency discussion.
If you observe the same symptom, stop Core Temp and see whether clocks return to normal, then record the CPU, motherboard, BIOS/AGESA, PBO settings, Windows version and Core Temp build. Test again after reboot and, if practical, with default BIOS settings. Compare behavior with other monitoring components disabled before attributing the change to one program; a timing association alone does not establish cause.

Drivers, security and choosing a download
Recent release notes include driver-security changes, restricted driver access and a BSOD fix involving Kernel-mode Hardware-enforced Stack Protection. Monitoring software can interact with low-level system components, so use a build from a source you can verify and keep it updated. Those fixes do not establish that any release is vulnerability-free.

Use the ALCPU Core Temp page for downloads and the ALCPU forums for the developer’s forum area. The AnandTech thread also points users toward developer-hosted downloads. Search results and third-party download pages are not reliable authorities for the current version or licensing terms.
Historical thread discussion mentions a standalone version as an alternative to the installer and concerns about bundled extras in some earlier installer-era distribution practices. That history does not prove current installer behavior. Read each installer screen; if you want a portable copy or wish to avoid optional installer components, choose a standalone ZIP if the official page offers one. For business deployment, verify current licensing terms directly with the developer rather than relying on third-party claims.
Windows, Linux and platform expectations
The thread documents substantial Windows-focused GUI development. In 2024 the developer also posted a Linux command-line build, described as unfinished and requiring setup; when functioning correctly it generated a CoreTemp-Dump.txt file beside the executable. That is not equivalent to the mature Windows GUI release. The available thread evidence does not establish mature, current macOS support or broad cross-platform availability.

When Core Temp is the right tool—and when it is not
- Choose Core Temp if you want focused CPU temperature monitoring, per-core readings where supported, tray display, logging or plugins, and are willing to check model-specific support when something looks wrong.
- Choose a broader monitor if you need GPU, storage, motherboard, fan, memory or extensive voltage telemetry. HWiNFO is suited to comprehensive diagnostics but exposes a denser set of information; HWMonitor offers a broader system view; Libre Hardware Monitor is an open-source alternative whose hardware support and interface maturity can vary by platform and release.
- Use firmware readings as an independent check when diagnosing whether a Windows monitor is reporting unexpectedly. Firmware screens are not a substitute for continuous logging or in-game monitoring.
- Look elsewhere for formal fleet support if you need centralized management, enterprise deployment assurances or a support contract; a responsive forum thread is not a commercial support agreement.
How to get useful answers from the thread
- Start with the newer posts for current releases, then search earlier pages for your CPU generation or symptom.
- Prefer direct developer release notes and explanations over user anecdotes when deciding what a build changed or what a field means.
- When posting, include the exact CPU, motherboard, BIOS/AGESA, Windows build, Core Temp version and steps to reproduce the issue.
- Keep the thread’s age in mind: older posts may describe different processors, Windows releases, installer formats and Core Temp builds.
