To convert a media file with FFmpeg, give it an input with -i, choose whether to copy or re-encode its streams, and place output options before the output filename. For example, ffmpeg -i input.avi output.mp4 asks FFmpeg to convert the input to an MP4 output, but the extension alone does not guarantee that the codecs inside will work in your target player or editor. The key decision is whether you need to change only the container or also change the encoded audio or video.
What “format” means in FFmpeg
A media file has a container and one or more encoded streams. The container—such as MP4, Matroska (MKV), or AVI—packages streams and related data. A stream’s codec determines how its audio or video is encoded. These are separate compatibility choices: changing a filename extension does not change the streams, and putting streams in a different container does not necessarily make them playable by a particular device.
FFmpeg handles formats through libavformat and codecs through libavcodec. What you can use depends on the FFmpeg build installed on your computer, including any optional library support. Check the official supported-formats and codecs reference, then verify the capabilities of your own build rather than assuming every listed option is available.
Choose between remuxing and transcoding
| Approach | What happens | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streamcopy (remux) | FFmpeg copies encoded streams into a different container without decoding and encoding them again. | The existing streams are suitable for the destination container and the target can play them. | Fast and avoids another lossy encode, but does not change codecs or fix an incompatible stream. |
| Transcoding | FFmpeg decodes a stream and encodes it again, potentially with a different codec or settings. | You need a different codec, a filter, resizing, deinterlacing, audio resampling, or mixing. | Uses more computing resources and a lossy encode can reduce quality. |
The FFmpeg command documentation defines transcoding as “the process of decoding a stream and then encoding it again.” Encoding can be computationally expensive; when the new encoding is lossy, it can also degrade quality. Prefer streamcopy if it meets the destination’s requirements. See the FFmpeg command documentation for details on streamcopy, transcoding, and options.

Inspect your FFmpeg build and source file
Install FFmpeg using a trusted package source for your operating system, then run these commands in a terminal or command prompt:
ffmpeg -versionprints the installed version and build configuration.ffmpeg -formatslists formats supported by that build.ffmpeg -codecslists codecs available in that build.ffmpeg -i input.extprobes an input and reports streams; because no output was supplied, it will normally finish with an error about the missing output after printing the information.
Replace input.ext with the real file path. If a path contains spaces, enclose it in quotes, for example "Family video.mkv". The online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly and corresponds to the newest revision; your installed version’s command output and local support can differ. The documentation index explains this revision caveat.
Convert video while choosing what to preserve
Let FFmpeg choose defaults
A basic conversion command is:
ffmpeg -i input.avi output.mp4
This tells FFmpeg to read input.avi and write output.mp4. It is a starting point, not a compatibility guarantee: the default stream selection and encoding choices may not match the target player, editor, or upload service.
Re-encode video, copy audio
If the destination needs different video encoding but the existing audio stream is acceptable, you can request video encoding with -c:v and audio streamcopy with -c:a copy:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v libx264 -c:a copy output.mp4
This uses the libx264 video encoder if it is available in your build. It leaves the audio stream encoded as it was; that stream must still be accepted by the chosen output container and destination. If it is not, select a compatible audio encoder instead of copying it.
Choose output codecs explicitly
Use -c:v for video and -c:a for audio. For example, specifying -c:v libx264 requests the libx264 video encoder. The correct encoder depends on the destination’s documented requirements and your installed build. Check available codec support with ffmpeg -codecs; do not assume an encoder is present just because FFmpeg supports the general format.

- HDMI Output Based on the Original Source:Converts an analog RCA signal to HDMI output with selectable resolution up to 1080P. The av to hdmi converter changes the signal format but does not turn lower-resolution VHS footage or classic game graphics into native HD content. Final picture quality depends on the original source, connected equipment and display. For stable operation, connect the included USB power cable to a 5V/1A USB power source.
ffmpeg -i input.wav output.mp3
For an explicit audio codec, use -c:a followed by an encoder supported by your build and appropriate to the intended destination. To copy audio without re-encoding into another compatible container, use -c:a copy. Streamcopy preserves the encoded audio; it does not transform a WAV stream into MP3. To choose a particular audio stream from a file with multiple tracks, use -map as described below.
Change containers without re-encoding
When the existing encoded streams are suitable for the new container and the intended playback destination, try streamcopy:
ffmpeg -i input.ext -c copy output.ext
This copies streams; it does not convert their codecs. Some stream-and-container combinations are not accepted, so the command can fail or produce an output that is unsuitable for the destination. If that happens, consult the destination’s requirements and re-encode only the incompatible streams. Changing .mkv to .mp4 in a filename alone is not a remux and does not alter the file’s contents.
Select the right streams
Inputs can contain multiple video or audio tracks, subtitles, attachments, or data streams. FFmpeg’s automatic stream selection may not choose what you intend. Use -map to specify input streams, and stream specifiers to target stream types or indexes. For instance, -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream from input 0, while -map 0:a:0 selects its first audio stream. A command that maps only those streams omits unselected subtitles or other tracks unless you map them too.

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -c:a copy output.mp4
Options generally apply to the next input or output file, so order matters. Put output settings after the relevant input and before the output path. See the official stream-selection and command reference for stream specifiers and mapping behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the output for its real destination
FFmpeg does not establish from the extension alone that an encoder can convert every selected stream or that the resulting streams are acceptable in the output format. Inspect FFmpeg’s completion messages and probe the resulting file with ffmpeg -i output.ext. Then test playback, editing, or upload in the actual application or destination. Compatibility requirements are destination-specific, so there is no universal codec or quality setting that fits every device.

For quality or size adjustments, choose settings from the intended destination’s published requirements and evaluate the result. Re-encoding an already compressed file can reduce quality; avoid repeated lossy conversions where streamcopy or the original source will work. Transcoding and filtering also require more processing than copying streams, so a large file or complex filter may take longer.
Troubleshoot common conversion problems
- “Unknown encoder” or encoder unavailable: The installed build may not include the requested encoder. Check
ffmpeg -codecsand use an encoder available in your build, or install a build with the needed support. - Streamcopy fails: The source stream may not be valid in the selected container. Confirm the target’s supported codecs; re-encode only the stream that cannot be copied.
- Output exists but will not play: A valid-looking extension does not establish compatibility. Probe the file and check the destination’s codec and container requirements, then adjust stream selection or encoding.
- Wrong language, track, or video appears: The file may contain several streams and automatic selection chose a different one. Inspect the input listing and use
-mapwith stream specifiers. - Subtitles or attachments disappeared: The command may have mapped only audio and video, or the destination may not accept those extra streams. Decide which streams must be preserved and map them explicitly where supported.
- Command treats a path incorrectly: Quote paths containing spaces and check that the input file exists. Keep options in the correct position: input options before the input they apply to, and output options before the output filename.
- Online instructions do not match your installation: Online FFmpeg documentation follows the newest revision and is regenerated nightly. Check
ffmpeg -versionand the options available in your installed build.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing an extension convert a media file?
No. Renaming a file changes its name, not its container contents or encoded streams.
Can streamcopy improve quality?
No. It preserves the existing encoded streams and avoids another encode; it cannot restore quality already lost in the source.
Why can a file have an MP4 extension and still fail on a device?
The extension identifies neither every codec in the file nor whether those streams meet that device’s requirements. Check the streams and verify playback on the intended device.
