Yes—you can convert PNG to WebP for free without uploading your image. For a one-off file, use a browser converter that encodes locally on your device. For repeatable builds or batch jobs, install Google’s official cwebp utility. Choose lossless WebP when every pixel and transparent edge must remain exact; choose lossy WebP when a smaller file matters more than pixel-for-pixel fidelity.
Choose the right free method
| Method | Best for | Where processing happens | Important controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local browser converter | One-off files and small batches | Your device, according to the vendors’ claims | Lossless/lossy mode, quality, transparency, ZIP download |
Google cwebp |
Scripts, repeatable builds and local batch jobs | Your computer | Quality, lossless mode, output path |
| Server-side service | Automated pipelines when local tooling is unavailable | A remote server | Privacy policy, retention, limits and API reliability |
A local browser tool is usually fastest for a single image. Use cwebp when you need the same settings every time or must process directories in a build script. Keep the original PNG if it is an editable master or must remain compatible with older applications.
Convert PNG to WebP in a browser without uploading
- Open a converter that explicitly says encoding occurs locally in the browser. FreeWebP says files stay on the device, preserves transparency, allows quality adjustment and processes up to 20 images with ZIP download. FreeTinyPNG says it uses the browser’s native WebP encoder, supports lossy and lossless output and requires no upload. These are vendor statements, so verify the current page and limits before using either service.
- Select one or more PNG files. Do not choose a cloud-upload workflow if the image is confidential.
- Choose WebP as the output format.
- Choose lossless for logos, screenshots, line art, UI assets and delicate alpha edges. Choose lossy for photographs or large illustrations where a smaller file is the priority.
- If lossy mode exposes a quality slider, start around 80, then inspect the actual result. There is no universal quality value: text, gradients and transparency can reveal artifacts at different settings.
- Start conversion and download the WebP file (or the ZIP for a batch).
- Open the result in your target browser or application and check dimensions, transparency, text edges and file size before deleting the PNG.
How to confirm that transparency survived
Place the WebP over a contrasting background in an editor or web page. A checkerboard or background-colored preview can be misleading. If the former transparent region appears as a solid white rectangle, the converter exported an opaque image or the destination application does not support alpha correctly.

Google documents this basic conversion command:
cwebp -q 80 image.png -o image.webp
The -q value controls lossy quality from 0 to 100; higher values generally preserve more detail and produce larger files. Run the command from the directory containing the PNG, or provide full paths:

Lossless output
For pixel-exact reconstruction, use lossless mode:
cwebp -lossless image.png -o image.webp
Lossless WebP still changes the container and compression, but it reconstructs the original pixels. It is the safer choice for screenshots, diagrams, logos, UI sprites and images with hard alpha edges. Compare the resulting byte size; a particular PNG may be smaller than its lossless WebP counterpart.
Repeatable batch conversion
On a Unix-like shell, a simple loop converts every PNG in the current directory:
for f in *.png; do cwebp -q 80 "$f" -o "${f%.png}.webp"; done
Review the shell’s filename behavior before using it on folders with unusual names. Preserve the PNG files until visual and automated checks pass.

Lossless
- Reconstructs the original pixels.
- Retains transparency when the source and encoder contain an alpha channel.
- Usually best for text, line art, screenshots and logos.
- Does not guarantee a smaller file than PNG for every image.
Lossy
- Discards image information to reduce bytes.
- Can be substantially smaller, but ringing, blur or banding may appear around text, edges and gradients.
- Requires inspection at the display size that matters to users.
- Can retain transparency in WebP, but test the actual encoder and destination application.
Google for Developers reports that WebP lossless images are 26% smaller than PNGs and that WebP lossy images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index. Google’s pages do not display a publication year for these figures, and they are broad format statements—not a prediction for your file. Measure your own images.

Transparency, browser support and compatibility
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression and transparency. Google lists native support in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Opera; its FAQ specifies Safari 14 and later for lossy, lossless and alpha support. “Native support” does not mean every image editor, CMS, email client or embedded device accepts WebP, so check the software and browsers used by your audience.
Use a fallback when compatibility is uncertain
For a website, keep a PNG fallback where required. A modern HTML picture element lets capable browsers use WebP while older clients receive PNG:
<picture>
<source srcset="hero.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="hero.png" alt="Product interface" width="1600" height="900">
</picture>
Do not replace an archival or editing master solely because a WebP is smaller. Keep the source PNG under version control or in your asset archive.
Quality and size checks that prevent bad conversions
- Record the original PNG’s dimensions, color appearance and byte size.
- Convert once in lossless mode and once in lossy mode at a trial quality.
- Compare at 100% zoom for text, hairlines, transparency boundaries and gradients.
- Compare at the actual rendered size; an artifact invisible at 25% may be obvious in a logo.
- Check the WebP in every destination application and at least one target browser.
- Keep the version that meets the visual requirement with the smallest acceptable byte size.
WebP changes compression, not the intrinsic pixel dimensions. If you need a smaller displayed image, resize separately and preserve the aspect ratio.

Privacy and processing location
“Free” does not automatically mean private. A converter that processes locally should not need to transmit the image, but confirm the current vendor wording and watch the browser’s network behavior if the file is sensitive. A server-side converter may retain uploads, logs or generated files; read its retention terms before submitting private documents, customer data or unreleased designs. Offline cwebp avoids that upload decision entirely.
Or skip the browser setup
If the PNG is a screenshot you need to regenerate from a web page, ScreenshotNeo can return a WebP directly from one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

The WebP is larger than the PNG
This can happen with small graphics, already-optimized PNGs or lossless output. Try a measured lossy setting for non-critical imagery, or keep the PNG when it is smaller and compatibility is more important.
Edges look fuzzy or text has halos
Increase lossy quality or switch to lossless. Inspect at 100% and avoid repeatedly converting an already-lossy derivative.
cwebp is not found
The utility is not installed or its directory is not on your PATH. Install Google’s WebP tools for your operating system, reopen the terminal, then verify with cwebp -version. If you cannot install software, use a converter that performs encoding locally in the browser.
The destination application refuses the file
Check that the application version supports WebP and that the file extension matches its contents. Export PNG or JPEG as a compatibility fallback when the receiving system has a documented limitation.

FAQ
Can I convert PNG to WebP with no internet connection?
Yes. After installing cwebp, conversion runs locally and does not require uploading the image.
Is WebP always better than PNG?
No. WebP often reduces web bytes, but PNG can be smaller for particular graphics and remains more broadly accepted by older tools.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will converting change the image dimensions?
No. Format conversion preserves dimensions unless you separately request resizing.
