A normal HDMI cable usually cannot turn a laptop into a monitor. Most laptop HDMI ports are outputs, so connecting them to a desktop PC’s HDMI output normally produces no image. For a quick Windows setup, use Wireless Display/Miracast. Use Remote Desktop when you need to control the PC, an HDMI capture card when you need a wired workaround, and OneDrive or peer-to-peer synchronization when you need files available on both computers.
Strictly speaking, “CPU” means the processor. Here, the intended device is the desktop PC, tower, or system unit.

Fastest free option: use the laptop as a Wireless Display
Microsoft’s current Windows instructions use the Wireless Display optional feature and app on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. Both computers need Wi-Fi enabled, and each must support the relevant wireless-display hardware and drivers. The devices do not necessarily have to use the same Wi-Fi network, although putting them on the same local network is a sensible first troubleshooting step.

- Open Start > Settings > System > Projecting to this PC.
- Under the option to add Wireless Display, open Optional features.
- Select View features or Add a feature, depending on your Windows build.
- Search for Wireless Display, select it, and choose Install.
- Return to Projecting to this PC and open the Wireless Display app from Start.
Older Windows versions may show the older Connect app instead. Labels can differ by Windows release, language, and device-management policy.

Connect from the desktop
- On the desktop, press Windows key + K.
- Select the laptop from the available displays.
- Accept the connection request on the laptop if prompted.
- Press Windows key + P on the desktop.
- Choose Duplicate to show the same image, or Extend to create a second desktop area.
The other Windows key + P choices are PC screen only and Second screen only. Use the latter only if you want the desktop’s own display disabled while projecting to the laptop.
Wireless projection is not identical to plugging in a monitor. Compression, driver support, network congestion, and hardware capability affect image quality and responsiveness. It can be excellent for temporary work, presentations, and ordinary productivity, but it is not the best choice for competitive gaming or other latency-sensitive tasks.
If the laptop does not appear
- Make sure the Wireless Display app is open on the laptop.
- Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled on both computers.
- Put both devices on the same local network as an initial test.
- Restart the app and then restart both computers.
- Update the graphics and Wi-Fi drivers.
- Check whether the desktop’s wireless adapter and graphics hardware support Miracast-related projection.
- Test whether a VPN, firewall, or endpoint-security policy is blocking discovery. Disable protection only when permitted by your security policy, and restore it afterward.
- Try Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Connect to a wireless display, if that control is present.
A desktop with Ethernet but no Wi-Fi may not be able to transmit a wireless display. A compatible Wi-Fi adapter, remote-access software, capture card, or physical monitor may be necessary.

Use Remote Desktop when you need control
Wireless Display projects the desktop’s image. Remote Desktop or another remote-access application lets you operate the desktop from the laptop: opening applications, browsing files, and performing administration tasks. It is often the better option when projection is unavailable or when the desktop is being used without a physical monitor.

Remote access is not a physical second monitor. Games, hardware-accelerated applications, protected video services, color-critical work, and other specialized software may behave differently. Host availability also depends on Windows edition, configuration, and organizational policy, so check Microsoft’s current requirements for your edition before relying on the built-in host.
Do not use the obsolete Microsoft Store Remote Desktop app as a current default: Microsoft says that app reached end of support on May 27, 2025. Use the current Microsoft client path appropriate to your scenario or a reputable remote-access alternative. Protect remote access with strong authentication, and do not expose remote-access ports directly to the public internet without appropriate security controls.
Wired fallback: use an HDMI capture card
If Miracast is unavailable, a capture card can receive the desktop’s HDMI output and show it in software on the laptop:
Desktop HDMI output → capture card HDMI input → USB → laptop- Connect the desktop’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI input.
- Connect the capture card to the laptop by USB.
- Open the capture manufacturer’s software or another compatible video application.
- Select the capture card as the video source.
This does not make the laptop a native HDMI monitor. The signal is captured, processed, and displayed in a preview window. Latency depends on the capture device, USB connection, resolution, frame rate, and application. Some inexpensive devices capture at lower frame rates than their advertised output resolution suggests. HDCP-protected sources may not display, and audio may need separate routing.

A capture card is useful for viewing, recording, and troubleshooting. It is generally a poor substitute for a real monitor when you need high-refresh gaming, precise color, or the lowest possible delay.
Sync files separately
Displaying or remotely controlling the desktop does not automatically make its files available on the laptop. Decide whether you need access, synchronization, or backup:
- Access: The file stays on the desktop and is opened through a network share or remote session.
- Synchronization: Copies or synchronized representations are maintained on both devices.
- Backup: A separate, recoverable copy protects against deletion, corruption, or device failure.
OneDrive: simplest Windows workflow
- Sign in to OneDrive on the desktop.
- Sign in with the same account on the laptop.
- Put files you want synchronized inside the OneDrive folder.
- Wait for upload and download to finish.
- Open the OneDrive folder in File Explorer on the laptop.
- Use Files On-Demand where available if you do not want every file stored locally.
Microsoft also offers optional backup for common folders such as Desktop, Documents, and Pictures. Enable it only after checking how existing folders will be merged and where files will be stored. Microsoft’s OneDrive guide documents synchronization, Files On-Demand, and folder backup.

Synchronization is not backup: deletions and unwanted changes can propagate. Keep an independent backup with version history or offline protection. Avoid syncing virtual machines, database files, constantly changing application folders, or large game libraries unless the software specifically supports it. Confirm that important files are downloaded before working offline.
Resilio Sync: peer-to-peer alternative
Resilio Sync synchronizes folders directly between devices and supports features such as selective sync and bandwidth controls. It can suit users who want large working folders synchronized without placing the working copy in a conventional cloud service.
Both devices generally need to be online for changes to move between them, and synchronized deletions or corruption can still propagate. Resilio’s personal desktop download is designated for personal, non-commercial use, so check current licensing before business deployment. It is also not a replacement for an independent backup.

“My HDMI cable shows no image”
The laptop HDMI connector is probably an output. HDMI-to-HDMI cannot normally send the desktop’s signal into the laptop screen. Use Wireless Display, remote access, a capture card, or a real monitor.

The connection works but is slow
- Move both computers closer to the access point.
- Prefer a less congested 5 GHz or newer Wi-Fi connection where supported.
- Reduce other high-bandwidth traffic.
- Lower the desktop’s resolution or refresh rate.
- Use Duplicate instead of Extend if a second desktop is unnecessary.
- Try Remote Desktop for ordinary productivity.
These steps may help, but they cannot guarantee a particular latency, resolution, or refresh rate.
The desktop has no working monitor
Initial setup can be difficult without local visual access. Remote access may work if it was configured beforehand; a capture card can provide a view if the desktop outputs video. Some systems behave differently when no physical monitor is connected, including opening at an unexpected resolution. A physical monitor, display emulator, or virtual-display solution may help, but compatibility is hardware- and driver-dependent.
Files are out of date
Check that both devices use the same account or paired sync identity, synchronization is not paused, uploads and downloads have completed, storage is available, and the file is not online-only. Look for conflict copies and confirm that the application has released the file. Remote access alone does not synchronize files.
The laptop sleeps or locks
While plugged in, configure Windows power settings to keep the laptop awake during display use. Do not permanently remove security lockouts; keeping the screen awake is different from disabling password protection.
Important Windows version note
Microsoft says free Windows 10 Update support, technical assistance, and security fixes ended after October 14, 2025. Windows 10 menu labels and availability may therefore differ from Windows 11, and managed computers may have features restricted. Use Microsoft’s current wireless projection instructions for the exact build.
Best practical setup
For most Windows users, try Wireless Display first: it is the fastest no-purchase way to use the laptop as a temporary second screen. Choose Duplicate for the same image and Extend for moving windows between displays. Use Remote Desktop when the real requirement is controlling the PC, not merely viewing it. If you specifically need a cable, buy a compatible HDMI capture card rather than an ordinary HDMI cable. Set up OneDrive or a deliberate peer-to-peer sync tool separately when files must exist on both machines. For regular gaming, editing, color-sensitive work, or dependable low-latency use, a conventional monitor remains the technically better solution.
