Short answer: The Compaq V1100 can still be a good display for a retro-PC or CRT enthusiast if it is inexpensive and passes an in-person test. It is usually a poor choice for everyday modern computing: it is decades old, bulky, and built around analog video.
What is the Compaq V1100?
The likely model is the Compaq V1100—not “Compag”—a 21-inch SVGA CRT monitor listed in a refurbished-equipment catalog. The catalog entry identifies the model and screen class, but it is not a complete official specification sheet.

A healthy CRT can be appealing for older PCs and games because it handles analog video and does not have an LCD’s single fixed native resolution. Never open the casing unless you are trained and equipped to service CRTs. Their internal circuitry can retain dangerous high voltage even after unplugging.
Older connectivity and fewer modern features
The V1100 is an analog-era SVGA monitor. A modern computer needs a compatible VGA output or an active digital-to-analog converter. A passive HDMI-to-VGA cable does not universally convert digital HDMI into analog VGA; it works only in compatible situations where the source already provides analog output. Check the converter’s direction, supported resolutions, and refresh rates before buying.

- Check it while unplugged. Look for cracks, impact or liquid damage, signs of overheating, a damaged cable or VGA connector, and obvious marks that may indicate a permanently retained image. Do not remove the cover.
- Ask for a live demonstration. Have the seller run it for at least 20–30 minutes so you can see whether it remains stable as it warms up. If possible, test a cold start as well as a restart after warming.
- Use a known-compatible video source. Connect through VGA or a verified active converter. Test the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use rather than forcing an unverified maximum.
- Check solid-color screens. On black, look for bright spots or uneven glow; on white, look for tint and uneven brightness; on red, green, and blue, check for color patches or imbalance.
- Check detail and geometry. Inspect fine text for sharpness, then use a grid or geometry pattern to look for curved lines, edge distortion, or color misalignment.
- Try the controls. Test brightness, contrast, horizontal and vertical size and position, and degauss if the unit has that function. Confirm the picture changes predictably.
- Listen and observe. Walk away if it repeatedly clicks or shuts down, emits smoke or a burning/ozone-like smell, or makes signs of arcing. Do not keep testing a unit showing those symptoms.

If you are considering a repair, use a qualified CRT technician rather than opening the monitor yourself. Restoration can make sense for an enthusiast, but without a verified quote and a known fault, there is no sound basis for assuming repair will be economical.
